Ongoing

  • Taiz, Mocha, Lahij, Zinjibar, Sana'a, and Ataq fall to the Houthis.
  • Saudi-led coalition forces intervene in Yemen to restore Hadi Government.
  • Houthis continue offensive southward into Aden and eastward into Marib (Houthi high-water mark), but are halted by international intervention.
  • Saudi-led intervention with Pro-Hadi forces recapture Aden, Zinjibar and Lahij and continue counter-offensive towards Houthi held Sana'a
  • Mukalla was seized by AQAP
  • President Hadi and government officials flee to Saudi Arabia, returning to Aden after its recapture but again being exiled to Riyadh
  • AQAP seized Al Houta and Zinjibar in 2015, followed by Azzan, Habban, Ahwar and Shuqrah in early February 2016
  • Houthis and pro-Saleh forces seized a strip of Saudi territory in their southern border.
  • Growing Islamist violence in Aden since October 2015
  • Ceasefire deal reached on 10 April 2016, but failed
  • Al Houta and Mukalla recaptured from AQAP by Hadi loyalists
  • the Saudi-backed government have established a foothold in Saada province, home of the Houthis.
