There has been a period of increased Islamist terrorist activity in Europe since 2014. The rise in attacks is variously understood as spillover of the Syrian Civil War and linked to the rise of the self declared Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the European migrant crisis is considered as another cause.
ISIL had reportedly called on its fighters to carry out a coordinated wave of attacks across Europe. There was a sharp increase in the number of lone wolf attacks on European soil following the September 2014 call by ISIL spokesman Abu Muhammad al-Adnani for ISIL sympathizers to independently carry out attacks. Whereas it had been 2 years since the last lone wolf attack in September 2014, there were 9 in the ten months following.
France is a top-targeted country, with nineteen attacks occured between December 2014 and April 2017, including the January 2015 Île-de-France attacks, the November 2015 Paris attacks, and the July 2016 Nice truck attack. In the United Kingdom attacks have ocurred since early 2017 including the March 2017 Westminster attack, the May 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, and the June 2017 London attack. Other attacks in Europe include the Jewish Museum of Belgium shooting , the March 2016 Brussels suicide bombings, the December 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, and the April 2017 Saint Petersburg Metro bombing. Another commonly targeted place is the Turkish city of Istanbul, which was attacked in January 2016, June 2016 and January 2017.
