Ukraine (i/juːˈkreɪn/; Ukrainian: Україна, tr. Ukrayina [ukrɑˈjinɑ]) is the common English name for the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (Ukrainian SSR or UkrSSR or UkSSR; Ukrainian: Украї́нська Радя́нська Соціалісти́чна Респу́бліка, Украї́нська РСР; Russian: Украи́нская Сове́тская Социалисти́ческая Респу́блика, Украи́нская ССР; see "Name" section below), covering the period of Ukrainian history as a sovereign state in 1919–22 , and a Soviet socialist state as one of the constituent republics of the Soviet Union from its inception in 1922 to its breakup in 1991. It is referred to sometimes as Soviet Ukraine by some historians.
