Chicken Delight

imageChicken Delight

Chicken Delight is a chain of restaurants offering eat in, take out, and delivery service with a menu featuring chicken, pizza and ribs. Based in Winnipeg, the chain mostly has outlets in that city and throughout Manitoba. Although as of 2017 six Chicken Delight restaurants are located in the New York metro area, none of these are included in the corporate web site list of franchise locations.

The current operation is a relic of a much larger chain. Founded in Illinois in 1952, the chain grew to over 1,000 locations in the 1960s. It was purchased by Consolidated Foods in 1964. Its jingle "Don't cook tonight, call Chicken Delight", emphasizing their delivery service, was widely broadcast on American radio.

By the late 1960s, however, Chicken Delight in the US was a troubled operation. While emerging chains like McDonald's ensured that each and every outlet provided a product that met the franchisor's most exacting standards, the quality-control of Chicken Delight outlets in the US was lax. The company was fighting the battle of people who, having had a bad experience in one single outlet, generalized that to the whole chain, then told their friends to stay away.

At the same time, Chicken Delight was finding itself under increasing pressure from a fast-growing competitor, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Even though Chicken Delight and KFC were founded in the same year, Chicken Delight had grown far more quickly. KFC, in many markets, was just beginning to take hold. The competition became particularly strong when KFC added a new chicken product to their menu with a similar taste and texture to Chicken Delight's that they dubbed "Extra-Crispy."

In 1979 Otto Koch, owner of the successful Chicken Delight Canada Ltd., purchased the remaining rump of the American operations, and a handful of true Chicken Delight stores can once again be found in the US operating under modern quality-control and contractual conditions.

Chicken Delight serves all types of chicken products such as chicken wings, buffalo wings, chicken fingers, and chicken burgers. Other food products that the chain also offers are pizza, popcorn shrimp, and ribs. Sides also include french fries, onion rings, poutine (mostly used in Canadian locations), potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw. Gravy may also be added as a side as well. The only dessert product that Chicken Delight offers is a homemade individual cheesecake.

The chain also features Pizza and Chicken combos and individual and family dinners. All the individual dinners come with sides of fries, coleslaw, and a bread roll. The family dinner comes with the same sides as the individual dinners, but gravy is added. The Pizza and Chicken combos consist of a pie and a range from 6-15 pieces of chicken, comes complete with fries and gravy as the sides.

Chicken Licken (restaurant)

imageGolden Fried Chicken (Pty) Ltd

Chicken Licken is a South African fast-food fried chicken restaurant chain. The company had an 80% share of South Africa's fast food market in 2010, tying with McDonald's. According to a case study published by the Henny Penny Corporation in 2011, Chicken Licken is the "largest non-American-owned fried chicken franchise in the world".

Chicken Licken was founded in South Africa by George Sombonos, the son of a Greek immigrant restaurant owner. Sombonos learnt the restaurant trade in the 1970s at the Dairy Den, his father's restaurant in Ridgeway, a suburb in the southern Inner City region of Johannesburg.KFC entered the South African market in 1971. Sombonos bought Chicken Licken's secret fried chicken recipe from the owner of a fast food outlet in Waco, Texas, for US $1,000 while touring the United States in 1972 and introduced it to the Dairy Den. In 1975 he started serving black customers in their cars when apartheid segregation laws restricted their access to restaurants. In 1976 he introduced the drive-through restaurant concept to the Dairy Den after seeing it at Wendy's restaurants in the United States.

His father died in 1980 and Sombonos opened the first Chicken Licken restaurant in 1981 on the site of the Dairy Den. In 1982 he gave away the first two franchises, based in Soweto and Alexandra, as the company was still unknown and he was unable to sell them. Chicken Licken's presence in the townships during apartheid helped it to establish a loyal customer base among black South Africans. However, internal resistance to apartheid intensified in the mid-1980s and the company's operations in the townships were adversely affected by civil unrest until 1991. The company's association with the townships has also presented a challenge to growth outside the townships in a changing South Africa. George's daughter Chantal started working at Chicken Licken in 2001, and is next in line to succeed him running the family-owned business.

Chronic Tacos

imageChronic Tacos

Chronic Tacos is a Fast Casual Mexican Grill serving generous portions of authentic food. Using third-generation recipes, Chronic Tacos' made-to-order menu is completely customizable; main items served include: tacos, burritos, and bowl-ritos.

The first Chronic Tacos opened in Newport Beach in 2002. The relaxed atmosphere and addicting menu drew in a following and the Taco Life was born. Inspired by authentic food and the individuality, the Taco Life movement continues to spread across the nation.

In 2012, majority stake in the company was purchased by Calivan; by 2014, the franchise began its national expansion. Chronic Tacos now has 37 open locations serving in two different countries, and seven different states.

Chronic Tacos was founded in 2001 by Randy Wyner and Dan Biello. Wyner, started a shop in Newport Beach, California, because he was "tired of biking so far to find a good taco." Neither of the two had experience in the restaurant industry, so Wyner enlisted the help of a Mexican-American friend who was able to provide him with an authentic family recipe. In April 2006, with the help of Dan's brother Mike Biello, Chronic Tacos Enterprises was formed. The first franchise opened in San Clemente, California. There are roughly 35 restaurants present in states such as, California, Arizona, North Carolina, Washington, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Alabama and Canada.

In 2010, on the wave of success in an economic downturn, a franchise store was opened by professional skater and Jackass star Jason Acuña. The shop, located in Redondo Beach, California, is named Wee Man's Chronic Tacos after Acuña's own nickname which was given to him because of his small stature.

Because of Acuna's partial ownership, he made a brief promotion of the chain in Jackass 3D.
