Blimpie

imageBlimpie International, Inc.

Blimpie International, Inc., is a submarine sandwich chain in the United States. The company is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was founded in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1964, by three friends, and has since endured three ownership changes.

The first Blimpie store opened on May 16, 1964, in Hoboken, New Jersey. By mid-2002, there were about 2,000 Blimpie outlets in operation, located in 47 states and in 15 other countries. Blimpie does not own many stores corporately, but relies on revenue from franchises. In addition to traditional locations, Blimpie can also be found in a variety of nontraditional sites, such as inside convenience stores, gasoline station food marts, schools, office complexes, hospitals, and sports arenas. The number of Blimpie locations declined by over 60% through 2011.

A key area of growth is in the development or acquisition of other brands. In 1999, the company launched Pasta Central, a franchised chain within the "home meal replacement" category featuring Italian-style pasta and pizza; the concept was exclusively a vehicle for co-branded Blimpie/Pasta Central outlets. Two years earlier, Blimpie International acquired majority control of Maui Tacos, a Mexican quick-service restaurant chain. Along with Maui Tacos came its offshoot founded in 1998, Smoothie Island.

The first Blimpie sub shop opened on May 16, 1964, in Hoboken by Tony Conza, Peter DeCarlo, and Angelo Bandassare, former high school friends and classmates at Saint Peter's Prep in Jersey City. Inspired by the successful Point Pleasant operation Mike's Submarines (later Jersey Mike's Subs), the three speculated that a similar restaurant would do well in Hoboken. The store's name came about because Tony Conza preferred not to call the sandwiches subs, which he felt sounded like a greasy spoon. Conza preferred the term hoagies, but Hoboken residents were unfamiliar with the Philadelphia term. He scanned a dictionary until he found "Blimp", a word that sounded to him most like a sandwich. The original Blimpie store was a hit, and, before long, customers began asking about franchises. The first franchise was sold to a friend in western New York for $600 during the company's first year of operation.

Boost Juice

imageBoost Juice Bars

Boost Juice Bars is an international chain of retail outlets that specialise in selling fruit juice. Boost Juice Bars was formed in 2000 with the first store located in Adelaide, South Australia. The company has expanded internationally with stores in Asia, Europe, Russia and the Middle East through franchising.

The founder of Boost Juice Bars, Janine Allis, noticed the fad of the juice bar when on holiday in the United States in 1999. With her husband, Janine Allis decided to bring the idea to Australia. In 2000, Allis opened her first Boost Juice Bar in King William Street, Adelaide while she was on maternity leave. At the end of 2004, Boost Juice had 175 stores operating across Australia and New Zealand.

In May 2006, Boost Juice Bars ceased operations in New Zealand after the franchiser (which operated all the New Zealand stores) was put into liquidation. The stores were sold to Tank Juice who are now operating them under the Tank brand.

In 2007, the founders of Millies Cookies, Richard O'Sullivan and Mario Budwig, signed an agreement with Boost Juice Bars to launch the brand in the United Kingdom. By the end of the year, the company had also expanded into Chile, Kuwait, Singapore, Indonesia and, most recently, Thailand.

In 2008, Nestlé launched a range of fruit smoothies in association with Boost Juice Bars, to operate alongside the company's expansion into the United Kingdom.

Between 2009 and 2012, a Boost store operated in China, but it was plagued by problems—the store opening was delayed, the shop-fit was average and the product was not as good as expected.

In 2010 Riverside Company bought a 65% stake in the Boost Investment Group, paying around $65 million for the share. That year, Boost Juice launched "Boost the way you feel" rebranding to mark its 10th anniversary. Allis also participated in the Channel Ten TV show Undercover Boss.

In 2011, Boost Juice signed a franchise agreement for India.

Boston Market

imageBoston Market Corporation, Boston College

Boston Market Corporation, known as Boston Chicken until 1995, headquartered in Golden, Colorado, is a chain of American fast casual restaurants. It is owned by private equity firm Sun Capital Partners, headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida.

It was founded in December 1984 in Newton, Massachusetts, by Steven Kolow and Arthur Cores. The chain expanded rapidly in the early and mid-1990s. The company raised a lot of debt to finance its expansion. The rapid expansion allowed the company to create a steady stream of revenue from one-time development fees and increasing royalties, but also raised interest rates on its development loans. In 1998 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company was purchased by McDonald's Corporation in May 2000. McDonald's purchased the company for its real estate, but found the brand serviceable and therefore continued to operate and expand the chain. In 2007 McDonald's announced that it was "exploring strategic options" for the subsidiary. On August 6, 2007, McDonald's announced plans to sell the chain to Sun Capital Partners, a transaction that was completed on August 27, 2007.

Boston Market has its greatest presence in the Northeastern United States. As of August 2007 the chain has 530 company-owned restaurant locations in 28 states, with 14,000 employees. In the early 2000s Boston Market operated two locations in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In early 2002 Boston Market entered the Australian market, opening nine stores in the Sydney metropolitan area by 2004, before converting some stores to McDonald's and quietly exiting the Australian market later that year due to competitive pressures.

When it was known as Boston Chicken, stores specialized in rotisserie chicken and a variety of side dishes, but in February 1995, the chain expanded its menu to include turkey, meatloaf, ham, and sandwiches, and changed the name to Boston Market in Fall 1995 to reflect this, though the corporate name remained "Boston Chicken, Inc." until 1997, when it became so popular with the new name, the corporate name was changed to "Boston Market Corporation". The chain later added Beef Brisket. In 2005 Boston Market also started offering limited-time offers, such as Crispy Country Chicken, an oven-baked chicken breast with country gravy. Baked white fish, haddock or cod, was also offered on Fridays during Lent. Boston Market continues to introduce new items and flavors such as their popular BBQ Ribs, Oven Crisp Chicken and Tuscan Parm Chicken Premium Dish.

Brice Foods

Brice Foods was a company based out of Dallas, Texas, and was the parent of the frozen yogurt franchise I Can't Believe It's Yogurt. Brice Foods was sold in 1996 to Yogen Früz of Toronto, Canada, and the founders were no longer involved in the company.

I Can't Believe It's Yogurt was founded in 1977 by Bill and Julie Brice from Dallas, Texas. In 1981, I Can't Believe It's Yogurt sued TCBY, whose company name was originally "This Can't Be Yogurt!". The lawsuit filed by I Can't Believe It's Yogurt forced its competitor to change its name from "This Can't Be Yogurt!" to the backronym for its initials, "The Country's Best Yogurt."

In 1999, several Brice Foods executives were sued for investment fraud and conspiracy by investors in international franchise operations. The allegations related to Brice Foods' misappropriation of investor funds and defaulting on promissory notes back to 1992, and the flow of money to top company executives of Brice Foods. A state court trial in San Antonio, Texas found the executives not liable on all counts.
