It was the 57th edition of the Rome Masters, and was part of the ATP Masters Series of the 2000 ATP Tour, and of the Tier I Series of the 2000 WTA Tour. Both the men's and the women's events took place at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy. The men's tournament was played from May 8 through May 14, 2000 and the women's tournament was played from May 15 through May 21, 2000.
