Los Chinos de Ponce

Los Chinos de Ponce (English: "The Chinesemen of Ponce"), formally King's [Ice] Cream, is an ice cream store located at Calle Marina 9322 in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in front of the town square, Plaza Degetau, opposite the historic Parque de Bombas. Critics have called the store "a Puerto Rican institution" and its ice cream "the Caribbean's best." It has also been called "Puerto Rico's most famous ice cream stand." Another critic called it "[the reason] for which I'll always remember Ponce."

Their owners/founders were Alfredo Louk, originally from Canton, China, and his wife Violeta Chang de Louk, a Cuban woman of Chinese immigrant parents. The couple had fled the Fidel Castro government and established themselves in Ponce in 1963.

They opened the first King's Cream store in 1964. It was located at 61 Calle Vives, between Calle Union and Calle . A second outlet of the same company opened three blocks away across Plaza Las Delicias on Calle Marina a few years later.

The store has an array of local flavors, including pineapple, parcha (passion fruit), coconut, guanabana (soursop), tamarind, acerola, peanut, maize, and almond in addition to the traditional vanilla and chocolate flavors.

Mado (food company)

imageMADO

MADO is a Turkish ice cream brand and has over 250 branches working as cafes and restaurants all over the world. The brand gets its name from two words : "Maraş", the former name of the city where the firm is originated; and "Dondurma", the Turkish name used for ice-cream.

It was founded in 1850 by YaÅŸar Kanbur. The ice cream shop became a chain after 1991. It has more than 240 restaurants and cafes in Turkey and also has branches in Melbourne, and Sydney in Australia, The Netherlands, Dubai, Beirut, South Korea, Cyprus, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Greece.

MADO's history is the one with the history of making and serving ice-cream. As being the brand's the most important product, ice-cream was definitive in MADO's adventure through years. As the technology related to preparing, reserving and serving ice-cream evolved so did MADO. MADO gets its roots from a small ice-cream shop located in KahramanmaraÅŸ where everything was handmade. Since the 1960s there were many technological improvements regarding ice-cream production and conserving it. Each improvement gave the small entrepreneur to produce and preserve in higher amounts than before. In 1989, the company bought a government-owned milk factory through privatization and almost rebuilt it to make ice-cream production, which enabled the firm to preserve the quality of ice cream throughout the year, and especially produce in mass amounts. Then, improvements in preserving and cooling technologies enabled the firm to send ice cream throughout the country and more importantly outside of Turkey. While growing, MADO embraced the franchising model to sell its products in other cities than KahramanmaraÅŸ. Today, MADO has over 250 franchisees all over the world, where customers can buy the same ice-cream regardless of which MADO they are going to.

Magnolia (brand)

Magnolia is a food and beverage brand owned by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) and used by its various subsidiaries. The brand was commercially established by SMC (then known as San Miguel Brewery) as an ice cream brand in 1925.

The history of the Magnolia brand can be traced back to 1899 when an American by the name of William J. Schober arrived in the Philippines as a cook in the volunteer army and introduced the “magnolia pie”, “magnolia ice cream” and “magnolia ice-drop”. In 1925, Schober sold his business interests to SMC (then known as San Miguel Brewery). The dairy plant at 526 Calle Aviles in the San Miguel district of Manila stood on the same street as the site of the original San Miguel brewery (6 Calle Aviles). A year later, the dairy plant was relocated to Calle Echague (now C. Palanca Sr., Street) in Quiapo, Manila. In 1970, production was transferred to a new modern facility in Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City, known as the Magnolia Dairy Products Plant. The facility also housed the main branch of its Magnolia ice cream parlor.

In 1972, SMC entered the poultry business with its first breeder farm in Cavite. The following year, SMC established its first chicken processing plant in Muntinlupa to produce Magnolia Fresh Chicken. The poultry business, along with its B-Meg feeds business were operated as the Feeds and Livestock Division of SMC until it was spun-off as a new subsidiary (San Miguel Foods, Inc.) in 1991.

In 1981, SMC spun off its butter and margarine production to a new subsidiary named Philippine Dairy Products Corporation (now known as Magnolia, Inc.), a joint-venture with New Zealand Dairy Board, with its production facility based in the Aurora Boulevard plant.

In 1996, SMC transferred its ice cream and milk businesses to a new company, Magnolia-Nestlé Corporation, a joint-venture with Nestlé. SMC retained ownership of the Magnolia brand since it was also being used by other SMC products. SMC also retained ownership of the Aurora Boulevard property. In 1998, SMC withdrew from the Magnolia-Nestlé venture and a non-compete clause barred it from the ice cream and milk businesses for five years. Upon the expiration of the non-compete clause in 2004, SMC revived its ice cream and milk businesses through its subsidiary, Magnolia, Inc. On May 19, 2010, Magnolia, Inc. inaugurated its main ice cream production facility in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
