Fosters Freeze

imageFosters Freeze

Fosters Freeze (full name Fosters Old Fashion Freeze) is a chain of fast-food restaurants in California. It was founded by George Foster in 1946 on La Brea Avenue in Inglewood, California, a location that still remains.

The Fosters Freeze name comes from the fact that it is best known for its soft-serve ice milk and milkshakes, which is reflected in the marketing slogan, "California's Original Soft Serve." Its mascot is an ice cream cone wearing a chef's hat.

At franchise locations, the company also offers a variety of foods, including hamburgers, chicken strips, and fish.

The restaurant's slogan was "Everything at Foster's is wonderful to eat".

George Foster owned the western development rights for Dairy Queen. The name Dairy Queen was already being used in California so Dairy Queen was called Foster's Old Fashion Freeze in California.

That didn't stop him from introducing soft serve ice milk products to Californians. He built over three hundred franchised retail outlets which marketed ice milk soft serve products and other refreshments. He then sold the Fosters Freeze franchise to Meyenberg Milk Products. Meyenberg produced large amounts of evaporated and sweetened condensed milk for domestic and foreign Federal relief programs, as well as for industrial food production uses. The acquisition of the Fosters Freeze product name was a good fit for Meyenberg. During the summer months when milk production increased, the company processed and sold its excess milk in the form of Fosters Freeze ice milk products to its franchisees.

Meyenberg became a very profitable company because of its government contracts. But, its Fosters Freeze franchised stores were falling behind the new fast food trend of offering hamburgers and other hot foods. The company helped its franchisees update and remodel their stores so they could include hamburgers, french fries and Mexican food on their menus. The move made the old stores very profitable. But it didn't provide Meyenberg with any increased franchise royalties for the sale of these hot foods, even though they were marketed under the Fosters Freeze name.

Four Seas Ice Cream

Four Seas Ice Cream is an independent ice cream shop located in Centerville, Massachusetts. It is one of the three oldest ice cream shops in New England. It has been the winner of many awards and citations over the years as the result of its flavors. In the past, it has been voted number seven on the list of Top 10 Ice Cream Parlors in the United States.

The shop was founded in 1934 by a W. Wells Watson. The store was named from part of a poem by "Mable E. Phinney" - 'Cape Cod Calls'; '"We face four seas," our slogan runs Four seas of azure blue...' The 4 seas refers to the 4 bodies of water surrounding the Cape: Atlantic Ocean, Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and Nantucket Sound. In 1960, the shop was purchased by Dick Warren and during this time the parlor was frequented by the Kennedy Family. The store was operated by Warren until 2001 when he sold it to his son and daughter-in-law - Douglas and Peggy Warren. Dick Warren—also known as "Chief" by his employees—continued to help out at the store until his death in 2008. He wrote the book "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Home Made Ice Cream." The shop has stayed in the same location over the past 75 years, and has even kept the same diner feel setup that it originated with. Over the years, the shop has garnered many national awards from many reputable organizations. In 2011, Food and Drink Magazine named the company number sixteen in their top 25 ice cream stories.

Frost Gelato

imageFrost Gelato

Frost Gelato is an international chain of gelato specialty shops founded in Tucson, Arizona, United States in 2005. Frost Gelato has received multiple awards for their gelato including being Tucson Lifestyle's Best of City for ten years in a row as well as being on Yahoo Food's 18 Best Ice Cream Shops in America.

Frost Gelato serves over 75 gelato and sorbet flavors all created fresh in store daily. The company also imports all of their ingredients, with the exception of milk and sugar, as well as their machinery from Italy.

The concept of Frost Gelato came when founders Jeff Kaiserman and Stephen Ochoa were in Rome on a hot summer day and all they could find was hot bottled water, upon searching for something cold they came across a Gelateria where they tasted the ice cream and were told that it was gelato. Both owners enjoyed the gelato so much that they made it a mission to try the best gelato each town had to offer as they continued to travel to other cities in Italy. Upon return to the United States, both owners tried many ice cream shops and could not find one that came close to the taste of the ice cream they had in Italy concluding that the only way to get gelato at the time was to make another trip to Italy.

Thus both owners searched for a way to make gelato in the United States eventually locating a company that imports ingredients directly from Italy, after spending days studying how to make gelato, the owners created their first batch and after sampling it felt the tastes they had come across in Italy. Both owners wanted to share the taste of gelato with their community and thus after a few months, Frost Gelato was founded in 2005 with the first store opening in Tucson, Arizona.

Frost Gelato has since expanded both in the United States and internationally since opening the first store in Tucson, Frost Gelato now operates in 11 cities in the United States across six states as well as in nine countries across the Middle East and North Africa including Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Most locations aside from the original store are franchises.

Gilles Frozen Custard

Gilles Frozen Custard is a brand of frozen custard that originated at the Gilles Frozen Custard Stand, the oldest frozen custard stand in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (and one of the first in the country), dating back to 1938. The company and custard stand (still at its original location) was founded by Paul Gilles.

In 1972, after selling limited quantities of the custard at a local supermarket, Paul Gilles sold the rights to manufacture and distribute the custard to an outside company. Thus, Gilles Frozen Custard can be found pre-packaged in supermarkets throughout the Midwest; however, because of the differences in the manufacturing process, the frozen custard sold in stores deviates from Gilles's original recipe, which is still used at the custard stand. The naming rights to the pre-packaged custard have changed hands several times since 1972; currently, the supermarket version of Gilles is manufactured and distributed by Schoep's Ice Cream of Madison, Wisconsin.

Gilles is a favorite of former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, who stops in to the stand for a hot dog and soda nearly every time he visits Milwaukee. Similarly, some fans of the baseball team Milwaukee Brewers frequent the stand after games; the Gilles stand is down the road from Miller Park, where the team plays.
