The European men's ice hockey team is governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation, National Hockey League's organization and its players' association. It represents countries in Europe not otherwise represented at the World Cup of Hockey (the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden).
For the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, team Europe consisted of players from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The team played 6 first round games. Team Europe shut out Team USA 3-0. Then they beat Team Czech Republic 3-2 in OT and lost to Canada 4-1 to end the group stage. Team Europe clinched the second seed in Group A and a semi-final game against Sweden.
Europe and Sweden played a close semi-final game, with Team Europe winning 3-2 in overtime on a controversial goal by Tomas Tatar.
Team Europe made it to the final of the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, losing the best of 3 series 2-0 to Team Canada.
