Baby Ruth

Baby Ruth

Baby Ruth is an American candy bar made of peanuts, caramel and chocolate-flavored nougat covered in compound chocolate. Allegedly named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter Ruth, Baby Ruth is currently owned by the Swiss company Nestlé.

In 1921, the Curtiss Candy Company refashioned its Kandy Kake into the Baby Ruth. The bar was a staple of the Chicago-based company for some seven decades. Curtiss was purchased by Nabisco in 1981. In 1990, RJR Nabisco sold the Curtiss brands to Nestlé.

Although the name of the candy bar sounds like the name of the famous baseball player Babe Ruth, the Curtiss Candy Company traditionally claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland. The candy maker, located on the same street as Wrigley Field, named the bar "Baby Ruth" in 1921, as Babe Ruth's fame was on the rise, 24 years after Cleveland had left the White House, and 17 years after his daughter, Ruth, had died. The company did not negotiate an endorsement deal with Ruth, and many saw the company's story about the origin of the name to be a devious way to avoid having to pay the baseball player any royalties. Curtiss successfully shut down a rival bar that was approved by, and named for, Ruth, on the grounds that the names were too similar.

In the trivia book series Imponderables, David Feldman reports the standard story about the bar being named for Grover Cleveland's daughter, with additional information that ties it to the President: "The trademark was patterned exactly after the engraved lettering of the name used on a medallion struck for the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, and picturing the President, his wife, and daughter Baby Ruth." He also cites More Misinformation, by Tom Burnam: "Burnam concluded that the candy bar was named ... after the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Williamson, candy makers who developed the original formula and sold it to Curtiss." (Williamson had also sold the "Oh Henry!" formula to Curtiss around that time.) The writeup goes on to note that marketing the product as being named for a company executive's granddaughter would likely have been less successful, hence their "official" story.

Balisto is a wholemeal biscuit bar snack manufactured by Mars, Incorporated, consisting of a digestive biscuit centre and a variety of milky cream toppings, and coated in milk chocolate.

Normally, there are two fingers in a package, though the multipack contains ten fingers wrapped individually. They are available in Ireland, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Slovenia and Italy. In Spring 2011, the bars were introduced to the United Kingdom

When the Balisto bar was released in 1981 it was produced by Mars, Incorporated in West Germany. Its name supposedly alludes to its dietary fibre content ("Ballaststoffe" in German).

The first bear shaped chocolate-covered marshmallow candy was invented and manufactured in 1962 by the chocolate factory Bouquet d'Or, in Ascq (now Villeneuve-d'Ascq), France under the name 'Petit ourson'.

Some confectionaries have started to make their own bear shaped chocolate-covered marshmallow candy as the Bouquet d'Or's one, as Nidar in 1975.

Bar One or BARONE is a popular chocolate bar manufactured by Nestlé and sold in South Africa and India. It is similar to the English Mars Bars and consists of a layer of malted nougat with a caramel topping and covered in milk chocolate.

It was first manufactured in South Africa in 1965 and is produced at the Nestlé factory in East London. In India it is one of the top 5 most sold chocolate bars.

Other products have also been released using the Bar One branding or popular cuisine made using the chocolate bar.

Bazooka (chewing gum)

Bazooka is a brand of bubble gum introduced in 1947.

Bazooka bubble gum was first marketed shortly after World War II in the U.S. by the Topps Company of Brooklyn, New York. The gum was packaged in a red, white, and blue colour scheme. Beginning in 1953, Topps changed the packaging to include small comic strips with the gum, featuring the character "Bazooka Joe". There are 75 different "Bazooka Joe" comic-strip wrappers to collect. Also on the comic strip is an offer for a premium and a fortune. Older Bazooka comic strips were larger in size and are no longer available.

In addition to "Original", Topps eventually included the flavors "Strawberry Shake," "Cherry Berry," "Watermelon Whirl," and "Grape Rage." Bazooka gum also makes sugar-free flavors such as "Original" and a "Flavor Blasts" variety, claimed to have a longer-lasting, more intense taste. Bazooka gum comes in two different sizes.

Bazooka bubblegum is sold in many countries, often with Bazooka Joe comic strips translated to the local language. Bazooka gum is sold in Canada with cartoons in both English and French, depending upon the city. In Israel, it is manufactured under license by Elite; the cartoons are written in Hebrew.

In November 2011, Bazooka Candy Brands announced they would no longer include comics, instead using brain-teasing puzzle wrappers in an attempt to modernize the brand.

In Argentina sales continue with the comics in spanish using the name "Yo amo Bazooka" (I love Bazooka).

In May 2009 it was announced that the Bazooka Joe comic was to be adapted into a Hollywood movie.

Bazooka Joe was referenced in the Seinfeld episode "The Cafe."

Bazooka Joe gum was lampooned on 30 Rock, with Alec Baldwin's character telling a fictional story of the founder inheriting a "useless pink rock quarry" and turning it into gum by baking it. Later, a "softer version of their gum was used to make armor-piercing bullets." A fictional advertisement for the gum, starring Stacy Keach, encouraged viewers to chew Bazooka Joe gum "because life is hard," and "it's like chewing a mountain that someone shot a freeze ray into." It was also referenced in a November 2013 episode of How I Met Your Mother when Marshall made a joke that was not submitted to be part of the Bazooka jokes.

Black Jack (confectionery)

Black Jack is a type of "aniseed flavour chew" according to its packaging. It is a chewy, gelatin-based confectionery. Black Jack is manufactured under the Barratt brand in Spain. In the 1920s Trebor Bassett manufactured them, and the wrapper showed gollywogs on it. An example of it can be seen at the V&A Museum of Childhood.

While still manufactured under Tangerine Confectionery, Black Jacks have been rebranded from Barratt to 'Candy Land' and the packaging, most notably the outer box, has been redesigned. (2013)

Black Bullets

Black Bullets, properly called Jesmona Black Bullets, are a confectionery produced by Maxons Ltd, a confectionery manufacturer from the English city of Sheffield. They are popular throughout the north of England, most notably in Newcastle, where it is said they gained a great deal of popularity with the local miners. The name Jesmona refers to the Jesmond area of Newcastle and is a registered trademark of Maxons Ltd.

Black Bullets are spherical, dark brown, peppermint-flavored boiled sweets. They contain only three ingredients: sugar, glucose, and peppermint oil. They are available either in tins of various sizes or individually wrapped in bags.

The tins are notable for their traditional decorative style which uses only black and white, with text reading "Jesmona Old Fashioned Black Bullets."

Black Jack (gum)

Black Jack was an aniseed-flavored chewing gum made by Mondelēz International, originally the American Chicle Company.

In 1869, exiled former Mexican president and general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (famous for losing the Texas War of Independence) was living in New Jersey.

He brought a ton of Mexican chicle with him, in hopes of selling it to raise funds to help him return to power in his own country. He persuaded Thomas Adams of Staten Island, New York to buy it. Adams, a photographer and inventor, intended to vulcanize the chicle for use as a rubber substitute. Adams' efforts at vulcanization failed, but he noticed that Santa Anna liked to chew the chicle, which the ancient Mayans had done.

Disappointed with the rubber experiments, Adams boiled a small batch of chicle in his kitchen to create a chewing gum. He gave some to a local store to see if people would buy it; they did and he began production.

In 1871, Adams received a patent on a gum-making machine and began mass-producing chicle-based gum. His first product ("Snapping and Stretching") was pure chicle with no flavoring, but sold well enough to encourage Adams in his plans. He began to experiment with flavorings, beginning with sarsaparilla. In 1884, he began adding licorice flavoring and called his invention Adams' Black Jack, the first flavored gum in the U.S. It was also the first gum to be offered in sticks.

Black Jack Gum was sold well into the 1970s, when production ceased due to slow sales. American Chicle was purchased by the Warner-Lambert Company in 1962, which became part of Pfizer in 2000. In 2002, Adams was purchased by Cadbury, which merged with Kraft Foods in 2010 and became part of Mondelēz in 2012 following the split.

Blue Bird Toffee is a brand of toffee, founded in Hunnington, near Birmingham, England, in 1898 by Harry Vincent.

Vincent had similar ideas to Cadbury and the Frys with regards to the workplace being a pleasant environment to work.

Vincent's toffee was originally called Harvino, but after watching Maeterlink's play 'The Blue Bird of Happiness' he renamed the product Blue Bird.

Bluebird Toffee left their West Midlands site in October 1998, and the company now trade in Hull as part of Needler's.

Needler's changes name after acquiring Blue Bird to become Needler Bluebird. In 2002 Needler Bluebird was purchased by Ashbury Confectionery and discontinued all lines previously made by Needler's and Blue Bird.

Ashbury donated the company's collection of historic Blue Bird packaging to the Black Country Living Museum.

Bobs Candies

Bobs Candies are a brand of candy manufactured by the Ferrara Candy Company.

Bobs Candies was founded as the Famous Candy Company in Albany, Georgia by investor Robert E. McCormack in 1919. He changed its name to Bobs' Candy Company in 1924 and later dropped the apostrophe. It is the largest manufacturer of striped candy in the world.

McCormack was the first manufacturer to wrap his candy in cellophane. Additionally, a family member is credited with inventing a machine for twisting and cutting stick candy in 1952. A year later, he invented a machine to bend it into a cane. The Keller Machine revolutionized the business and created a new industry - the commercial manufacture of candy canes.

In 2005, Bobs was bought from the McCormack family by Farley & Sathers, which then merged with Ferrara Pan in 2012 to become known as Ferrara Candy Company.
