G. H. Bent Company

imageG. H. Bent Company

The G.H. Bent Company, better known as Bent's Cookie Factory, is a business specializing in cookies that has been operating in Milton, Massachusetts, since 1801. Bent's also sells a number of other baked goods, including their George and Martha Washington pies (both have powdered sugar on the top, the George with a cherry filling, and the Martha with a lemon filling). In addition, Bent's has expanded its menu to include a variety of delicious sandwiches all of which are named after a Milton based theme.

Josiah Bent began selling "water crackers" (biscuits made of flour and water that would not deteriorate during long sea voyages) in 1801 from facilities in Milton. His company later sold the original hardtack crackers used by troops during the Civil War. His grandson, George H. Bent, built the  2 1⁄2-story wood-frame factory building at 7 Pleasant Street. The top two levels of the factory are where the cookies and other baked goods are made; the storefront is at street level.

On February 10, 2000 the G.H. Bent Company Factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In April 2001, Senator Ted Kennedy visited G.H. Bent Company to unveil the official National Register plaque and make remarks in honor of the bicentennial of the Bent cracker.

A gas explosion at Bent's in early 2006 blew out all the windows, but the company was up and running again within weeks. In December 2013, Dr. Anamika Twyman-Ghoshal purchased the building and leased operations of the factory and coffee shop back to Sean Christie and Chris Twyman (operating as the Kiwi Bakery, LLC).

Georgetown Cupcake

Georgetown Cupcake is a cupcakery based in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. that has now expanded to 6 other locations nationwide. Sisters Katherine Berman (née Kallinis) and Sophie LaMontagne (née Kallinis) opened the shop in February 2008.

Growing up in Toronto, Katherine Berman and Sophie LaMontagne learned baking from their Greek grandmother. When they were children, their grandmother allowed them to use leftover cake batter to make miniature cakes, such as cupcakes.

Before opening the shop, LaMontagne was working in Boston for a venture capital firm, and Berman worked for Gucci in Toronto. Berman, a graduate of Marymount University and familiar with the Washington DC area, decided it would be a good place to open a cupcake shop. The sisters financed the shop using their own life savings, along with a small business loan. Their mother and employee, Elaine Kallinis, also helps run the shop.

Berman and LaMontagne opened the shop in Georgetown in February 2008, in a small, white-framed house on Potomac Street. The shop quickly became popular, often running out of cupcakes during the day and then closing up shop until the following day.

By December 2009, Georgetown Cupcake outgrew the location and moved the shop to a new location at the corner of 33rd and M Street NW in Georgetown. Georgetown Cupcake has opened a second location in Bethesda, Maryland, and sells cupcakes online. Recently they have opened in Soho, New York, Newbury St. in Boston, and Los Angeles. A shop was initially meant to open in Atlanta in Spring of 2013 and eventually opened in March 2015. Along with these locations the store also ships nationwide. The shop maintains the Potomac Street location for filling mail and special orders, as well as hosting special events such as cupcake decorating parties. The majority of shipping orders and large projects, however, are filled at their shipping annex located in Sterling, Virginia. On weekends at the M Street location, lines extend out the door and around the corner. Customers consist equally of both tourists and locals.

Georgetown Cupcake offers over thirty flavors each day, including multiple varieties of chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet that are available each day, several seasonal flavors, and other flavors on rotation throughout the week. The cupcakes are baked throughout the day at the shop, and use specially-sourced ingredients such as cocoa from France and vanilla from Madagascar. Each cupcake has roughly 250 calories, except for those with less frosting such as the Chocolate Ganache variety which have approximately 200 calories.

Great American Cookies

Great American Cookies is a chain of independently owned and operated franchised stores that specialize in gourmet cookies, especially cookie cakes. It is a franchise brand in the portfolio of Global Franchise Group. With more than 290 stores in the U.S., Great American Cookies stores are most commonly based in malls nationwide, particularly in the Southeast. The company was founded in 1977 and has its headquarters in Atlanta.

Great American Cookie Company was founded by future CEO Michael Coles and partner Arthur Karp, who each invested $4,000 to develop a business selling gourmet cookies on the strength of an old family recipe passed on to Karp by his grandmother. That same year the first store opened in Atlanta's Perimeter Mall, which continues to operate to this day.

Coles and Great American Cookie Company were initially met with rejection from mall owners and managers. Leasing space was denied under the assumption that the cookie concept would fail outside of east and west coast markets. The first store in Perimeter Mall became successful in its first month, and the company, originally named The Original Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Company but renamed Great American Cookie Company in 1985 and later Great American Cookies, first became franchised a year after its opening.

When Coles sold Great American Cookies to Mrs. Fields Famous Brands in 1998, the company had sales of over $100 million.

On January 29, 2008, Great American Cookies was acquired by NexCen Brands Inc. for its Quick Service Restaurant portfolio, which included sister companies Marble Slab Creamery, MaggieMoo's Ice Cream & Treatery and Pretzelmaker. Since July 2010, this portfolio of brands has been owned by Global Franchise Group, LLC, an affiliate of Levine Leichtman Capital Partners, and managed by GFG Management.

Great American Cookies recipes and production originate at its batter facility in Atlanta. Both traditional and original cookie flavors are offered at its stores, including: Original Chocolate Chip, Original Chocolate Chip with M&Ms, Peanut Butter with M&Ms, Peanut Butter Supreme, Sugar, Snickerdoodle, White Chunk Macadamia Nut, Chewy Chocolate Supreme, Chewy Pecan Supreme, Double Fudge, Oatmeal Walnut Raisin, Domino and Pecan Supreme.

Old HB

imageOld HB

Old HB, known as Hostess Brands from 2009 to 2013 and established in 1930 as Interstate Bakeries Corporation, was a wholesale baker and distributor of bakery products in the United States. Before its 2012 closure and liquidation, it owned the Hostess, Wonder Bread, Nature's Pride, Dolly Madison, Butternut Breads, and Drake's brands.

For many years the company was based at 12 East Armour Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri. In 2009, after it emerged from a 2004 bankruptcy, its name was changed to Hostess Brands and its headquarters moved to Irving, Texas. Hostess Brands sought bankruptcy protection again in January 2012.

On November 16, 2012, the company filed a motion in United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York in White Plains to close its business and sell its assets. On November 21, the motion was accepted and a judge agreed to sell the Hostess brands. The Hostess and Dolly Madison brands are now produced by Kansas City, Missouri-based Hostess Brands.

The company has its roots in Nafziger Bakeries, founded by Ralph Leroy Nafziger in a church basement at 6th and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City in 1905. Nafziger expanded the bakeries and bought out competitors. In 1925 he sold Nafziger to Purity Bakeries (which became American Bakeries) and acquired a controlling interest in Schulze Baking Company and its Butternut Bread brand.

In 1930 Nafziger announced the formation of the Interstate Bakeries Corporation (IBC) with the merger of Schulze Bakery and the seven bakers of Western Bakeries of Los Angeles to become the fifth largest baker in the United States. The company sold Butternut bread, wrapped in gingham, to grocery stores.
