Bimbo Bakeries USA

imageBimbo Bakeries USA

Bimbo Bakeries USA (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbimbo]) is the American corporate arm of the Mexican multinational bakery product manufacturing company Grupo Bimbo. It is the largest bakery company in the United States. The company, headquartered in Horsham, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, owns six of the top twelve fresh bread brands in the United States, including Entenmann's, Sara Lee, and Thomas'. It is also a top advertising sponsor for many major soccer teams around the globe.

In 2016, Forbes magazine ranked Grupo Bimbo at #986 on the Forbes Global 2000, an annual ranking of the top 2,000 public companies in the world.

The name Bimbo was first coined in 1945 when the company switched from Super Pan S.A. A mixing of the words bingo and Bambi.Bimbo's innocent, childlike associations fit the image the company wished to build. The English word bimbo, with its negative connotations, has no cognate in Spanish.

Grupo Bimbo entered the U.S. market with the purchase of Pacific Pride Bakeries in 1996. At the time, Pacific Pride Bakeries was the largest independent baker in the San Diego area. The current company, Bimbo Bakeries USA, was established in 1998 when Grupo Bimbo purchased Mrs. Baird's Bakeries in Texas, which at the time was the largest family-owned bakery in the United States, and merged it with the former Pacific Pride Bakeries. At this point, it was renamed Bimbo Bakeries USA and U.S. headquarters were set up in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2002, Grupo Bimbo made another acquisition when it purchased five plants in California, Texas, Colorado, and Oregon. The purchase also gave Bimbo Bakeries USA the right to such brands as Oroweat, Entenmann's, Thomas', and Boboli in the western United States (the rights in the eastern USA at the time were owned by George Weston Limited).

Brownberry (bakery)

Brownberry is a bakery in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, United States. The bakery was established in 1946, and is best known for its wheat bread. The company has changed management several times, and as of 2014 is owned by Bimbo Bakeries USA

Brownberry was created by Catherine Clark in 1946. Catherine was baking bread for her family and friends. Clark’s friends and family urged her to sell the bread. Catherine Clark and her husband mortgaged their home for $7,000 to become Brownberry Ovens. Catherine Clark came up with the name by watching the bread come out of the oven and said it looked “Brown as a berry”. That was how “Brownberry was born. Clark baked batches of 25 loaves daily in her home kitchen on summit avenue. Catherine set her ovens up in an old store building, bought a second hand truck for deliveries, and hired two assistants to help her with labor of kneading and baking. The net profit from the first year was $86. The sales doubled annually as the years progressed. Clark ultimately built a $400,000 plant in Oconomowoc. In 1953, they built a 20,000 square foot bakery, followed with a rapid succession by three 10,000 square foot additions. The additions have continued up to the present time. Catherine sold Brownberry Ovens to the Peavey Company in 1973 for $5.5 million. Catherine remained as chairman of the board of Brownberry. Catherine Clark was the first woman ever to serve on the Peavey board of directors. In 1996, Brownberry was sold for $146 million. In Catherine’s own words, her goals were, from the beginning to create a CERTAIN KIND OF PRODUCT, not the every day or the ordinary, not a copy of the competition, not something just a LITTLE bit better. Brownberry has never had a money-losing year.George Weston Bakeries wants to create a broader name recognition across the country. All the breads will bear the name Arnold by the end of 2008. Natural Breads to Arnold helped us to get them broader distribution to Northeast and Southeast to grow the business. Brownberry changed the recipe of the bread. Everyone was complaining that it didn't taste the same they wanted their old bread back. They changed the recipe back to the original Brownberry natural recipes. Arnold, like Brownberry, enjoys a long history, having begun in 1940 by Dean and Betty Arnold. In 23 years Brownberry has gone through 6 mergers to become what it is today. The bakery produces and ships more than 1 million pounds of bread every week. Brownberry made $115 million in 2013.

Cake in a Cup

Cake in a Cup is a cupcake shop, located in Toledo, Ohio. Owned by friends Lori Jacobs and Dana Iliev, Cake in a Cup is Toledo's first and only specialty cupcake shop. The shop opened Valentines Day 2008.

Lori Jacobs and Dana Iliev met while working at Grumpy's, a deli restaurant in Toledo. After living in New York City, Jacobs did not like the gourmet cupcake shops found in the city but thought that a cupcake shop would be a good addition in Toledo. Agreeing with Jacobs, the two bought a cupcake book, started making recipes, and developed their own business plan. Before opening the shop, the two sold cupcakes out of Iliev's kitchen, neither one having any formal training. In order to get publicity for the new business, Jacobs and Iliev appeared on the radio, on blogs, and delivered cupcake samples and menus to high end hair salons and other establishments.

The shop has more than thirty flavors in all, but only have certain flavors available each month. The shop also has a daily menu with five flavors rotating every day. Chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet are sold every day. Every cupcake is made from scratch with fresh ingredients. Cupcakes are sold for $2.50 each or $25 a dozen. The shop also does catering for weddings and other events in addition to walk in customers. Cake in a Cup usually sells 400-800 cupcakes on the weekdays and up to 1,500 on weekends. The goal each day is to sell out, however when they do not, the shop offers something called leftover alerts in which fans can get a discounted price on cupcakes by accessing the Facebook page and being the first to call into the shop.

The shop was featured on the Food Network television show Cupcake Wars and won the top $10,000 prize. The episode's theme was the art and film of director Tim Burton. Their winning cupcake was a chocolate cupcake with stout beer, frosted with chocolate ganache, and topped with lime green buttercream. It was decorated with upside down white chocolate chips so it would look like a mushroom, a common symbol in Tim Burton's artwork. Other cupcakes presented on the show were a blood orange and currant jam cupcake symbolizing blood, a red velvet cupcake with a red fondant heart to represent the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, and a lemon blueberry cupcake drawing from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory character, Violet.

Campbell Baking Company

imageCampbell Baking Company

The Campbell Baking Company is a historic building located in Waterloo, Iowa, United States. Built in 1927, the single-story, yellow brick structure is basically a utilitarian building with Spanish Revival decorative elements on its primary and secondary façades. An addition from the early 1930s compliments the original building, while additions from 1957 and 1977 do not. The last addition incorporated an unrelated brick building into the bakery complex. The original building was designed by the Toledo, Ohio architectural firm of Mills, Rhines, Bellman & Nordhoff, and built by the John G. Miller Construction Company. The building represents the consolidation of the bakery industry in the early 20th century from neighborhood retail bakers to local wholesalers to national industrial wholesale bakery companies. The Campbell Baking Company entered the Waterloo market as a financial backer of the Peerless Baking Company, which was formed in 1917. Campbell took over Peerless in 1921 in an older bakery building. It had become outmoded and too small for their needs, so they had this building constructed. They produce Wonder Bread and Hostess Twinkies here. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
