Beaten Track Brewery

The Beaten Track Brewery is an Australian brewery, located in the city of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, in the heart of the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia.

The brewery was founded by owner / proprietor Nick Galton-Fenzi in 2007. Its establishment marked the return to Kalgoorlie of brewing for local sales after an absence of 25 years.

In 1982, Bond Corporation, owned by Australian businessman Alan Bond, closed and dismantled the Kalgoorlie Brewing and Ice Company as a part of a strategic realignment of its Swan Brewery operations. Kalgoorlie, a major mining centre, had enjoyed a rich history of local beer brewing since the establishment of the city in the late 1800s, supplying beer to the large population of miners throughout the Eastern Goldfields. The loss of local brewing (and the locally produced "Hannans Lager") was much lamented by the inhabitants of the Eastern Goldfields.

Beaten Track brewery has taps in a number of bars and clubs in Kalgoorlie and sells its bottled products at a number of outlets in Kalgoorlie and Perth. Bottled or kegged product is available for direct sale from the brewery, which is also open to the public for functions and tastings.

Castlemaine Brewery, Western Australia

The Castlemaine Brewery was opened in 1896 by Howard Norman Sleigh at Riverside Road in East Fremantle, Western Australia and boasted a successful trading history until 1927 when the company was taken over by the Swan Brewery.

The Castlemaine Brewery was established in 1896 by Howard Norman Sleigh, with John Hugh Gracie (1855-1927) as head brewer. Gracie, who was born in Tasmania, was the chief brewer at Cascade Brewery prior to moving to Western Australia. In 1901 the Castlemaine Brewery was purchased by Gracie and Walter Frederick Walkley (1872-1936). In 1906 they purchased the nearby Phoenix Brewery. In 1910 Walkley returned to South Australia. In 1912 Gracie, the managing director of Castlemaine, retired. Castlemaine acquired a number of local hotels, including the Commercial and Beaconsfield Hotels in 1920, the Oddfellows Hotel in 1922, and the Richmond Hotel in 1925.

In 1927 the Castlemaine Brewery Co. was purchased by the Swan Brewery for £29,065 and 32,500 Swan Brewery shares. Swan subsequently closed the brewery, employing the majority of the workforce at the Perth operations.

The former brewery building was demolished to make way for the construction of the Stirling Traffic Bridge, linking Fremantle to North Fremantle.

In July 2007 the Empire Beer Group purchased the Royal Bar and Brasserie in East Perth for $3.5M (AUS), a departure from the plans outlined in the company's prospectus (which was to develop a second pub in Fremantle). In August 2008 the Empire Beer Group agreed to sell 'The Royal on the Waterfront' and the Colonial Brewing Company to the Colonial Leisure Group for $4.5M (AUS), a company owned by Chris Morris (the founder of Computershare).

Emu Brewery

The Emu Brewery was a brewery in Perth, Western Australia, which traced its history to the first decade of the colony. Founded in 1837 by James Stokes as the Albion Brewery, it was located beside the Swan River on a block bounded by Mounts Bay Road, Spring Street and Mount Street. The business changed hands — and names — several times, until its ultimate acquisition by competitor the Swan Brewery in 1927.

New brewery buildings were constructed over the years. The most notable of these was an imposing Art Deco building erected between 1936 and 1938. This building continued to be used to produce Emu-brand beer until the late 1970s, when production was shifted to a new factory in Canning Vale. Emu beer continues to be produced as a brand of Swan Brewery owner Lion Nathan.

In the early 1830s, the Swan River Colony was in its infancy and did not have a substantial local beer industry. Preachers from the Temperance League lobbied against the drunkenness prevalent in the Colony, however the lack of locally produced beer meant that they focused their attention on spirits drinkers.Governor James Stirling believed that the construction of a local brewery may reduce the Colony's drunkenness problems by allowing the men to drink beer instead of spirits.

Scotsman James Stokes had arrived in Western Australia in 1834 at the age of 24. He saw the opportunity in the market for a brewery, and investigated potential sites. Surveyor-General John Septimus Roe had set aside a small triangular lot for use as a brewery; this block was bounded by Spring Street, Mount Street and St Georges Terrace. Stokes preferred the much larger block across Spring Street, which extended almost all the way to the riverfront. The site was more suitable because it featured a natural spring, there was a sufficient different in elevation to enable the use of gravity in the brewing process without the need for a large tower. The proximity to the river also made river transport an attractive option. Stokes bought this land from George Leake, and was operating his brewery by 1837. Although the brewery was named the Albion Brewery after the ancient name for Great Britain, it was more popularly known as Stokes' Brewery. It was the colony's first major stand-alone brewery.

It is one of Australia's largest independent breweries. In 2016, it's New World Pale Ale - Little Dove - was awarded the Trophy for Champion Australian Beer at the 2016 Australian International Beer Awards. Gage Roads was listed on the ASX (stock code: GRB) in 2006 and remains Australia’s only remaining listed brewery. In 2009 Woolworths Limited acquired a 25 per cent share in the brewer for $2 million. In 2015 the brewer executed a comprehensive refresh of its core craft beers, adding three new beers to its year-round lineup. Kalgoorlie Brewing and Ice Company

The Kalgoorlie Brewing and Ice Company opened in 1896 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and traded successfully until 1943, when it was taken over by the Swan Brewery, and its name was simplified to Kalgoorlie Brewing Company. The Brewery, known locally as the 'Big K', located at Porter Street, Kalgoorlie, was the last survivor of nineteen breweries that once traded in the Eastern Goldfields.

The company was floated on 24 February 1896, with capital of £12,000. The first chairman was Robert McKenzie (MLC) and his fellow directors were James Hurtle Cummins, S. Hocking and John Joseph Dwyer. The first general manager and brewer, was J. H. Shickel(a German brewer and the proprietor of the Caledonian Brewery in South Australia). The brewery was the second brewery to be established in the Western Australian goldfields, with the first beers produced in September 1896. Following the death of Shickel of pneumonia in June 1897, the company appointed William Elliott as their brewer. Alfred Deakin subsequently replaced Elliott as the company's brewer in January 1900, a position he held for over forty years. Cummins was subsequently appointed Managing Director in 1904. In 1912 the company purchased the Lion Brewery in Coolgardie, followed by the Langsford Brewery in 1918 and Union Brewery in 1919. The headquarters of the brewery were then moved from Porter Street to the former Union Brewery's buildings in Brookman Street. In 1920 the company purchased the Boulder City Brewery. By 1924 the company had taken over all the rival breweries in the goldfields area.

James Cummins' daughter, Alice Mary Cummins, although educated as a lawyer, began working at her father's Kalgoorlie Brewing and Ice Company Ltd as a cash ledgerkeeper in 1928. She proceeded to learn and master all aspects of the brewing business from the technical, engineering, refrigeration through to marketing. Alice Cummins then set about re-establishing the business. In 1929 the company established a second brewery in the wheatbelt town of Merredin. Cummins made her director of the Merredin brewery. In the early 1930s Alice urged her father to turn from the production of English-style beer and introduce the top-fermentation process of German lager.
