Jollibee

imageJollibee Foods Corporation

Jollibee Foods Corporation (also called JFC, and popularly known as Jollibee) is a Filipino multinational chain of fast food restaurants headquartered in Pasig, Philippines. JFC is the owner of the popular fast food brand Jollibee, dubbed as Asia's answer to McDonald's in the fast food burger business.

With the success of its flagship brand, JFC acquired some of its competitors in the fast food business in the Philippines and abroad such as Chowking, Greenwich Pizza, Red Ribbon, Mang Inasal, and Burger King Philippines. As of January 2015, JFC had a total of more than 3,000 stores worldwide, with system-wide retail sales totaling 82.1 billion pesos for the fiscal year 2011.

In 1975, Tony Tan Caktiong and his family opened a Magnolia Ice Cream parlor in Cubao, Quezon City. In 1978, he and his siblings engaged the services of a management consultant, Manuel C. Lumba, who shifted the business focus from ice cream to hot dogs after his studies showed a much larger market waiting to be served. Lumba was Tan's last business and management mentor.

Jollibee experienced rapid growth. It was able to withstand the entry of McDonald's in the Philippines in 1981 by focusing on the specific tastes of the Filipino market, which differed from the American fast food company.

The chain opened successful milestone stores in the following years: its 100th branch in Davao in 1991; its 200th store in Malolos, Bulacan in 1996; its 300th store in Balagtas, Bulacan in 1998; its 400th store in Intramuros, Manila in 2001; its 500th store in Basilan in 2004; its 600th store in Aparri in 2007; its 700th store in Harrison Road, Baguio City in 2010; its 800th store in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon on October 18, 2013; and its 900th store in Palo, Leyte on September 30, 2015.

Kewpee

imageKewpee, Inc.

Kewpee Hamburgers is the second known chain of hamburger fast-food restaurants, founded in 1923 in Flint, Michigan under the name "Kewpee Hotel Hamburgs". Kewpee's current headquarters is located in Lima, Ohio. The chain is named after the Kewpie doll. Kewpee was one of the first to institute curbside service, which later morphed into a drive-in service, and then finally was transformed into drive-thru service. Its founder, Samuel V. Blair, also claims to be the first to use the flat bun and developed the "deluxe" hamburger. The Lima Kewpee locations have locally raised beef delivered daily to each Kewpee restaurant. The Kewpee Restaurant in Lima, Ohio is considered a historic site.

Kewpee Hamburgers is a chain of fast-food restaurants founded in 1923 in Flint, Michigan, by Samuel V. Blair under the name "Kewpee Hotel" in a stand.

In Lansing, Michigan, the Weston family has owned and operated the Kewpee's restaurant since it opened in 1923. The Weston family has had as many as two Kewpee restaurants open at one time in Lansing. The Westons are in their fourth generation of operating Kewpee. Kewpee's early plans under Blair and Adams seemed to stay out of major cities. After Prohibition, some Kewpee restaurants added real beer to their staple of root beer, which was on many Kewpee menus joining the standard coffee offerings of other hamburger chains. In 1928, the Lima, Ohio, location opened under the ownership of Hoyt “Stub” Wilson. About 200 Kewpee locations existed by 1929. In 1936, with a Kewpee already located in Findlay, Ohio, Wilson opened a restaurant there called Wilson's Sandwich Shop. At its peak just before World War II, there were more than 400 Kewpee restaurants in operation.

Blair, upon his retirement on April 1, 1944, started renting the original location. Blair died in 1945 and licensees continued to lease their locations and paid royalties for use of the Kewpee name from the estate until the Kewpee trademark went up for sale in 1955. The Blair estate owned locations went up for sale in 1958. The original location and the rights to the Kewpee were split up in sale with the original location going to leaser William "Bill" V. Thomas while the trademark went to Ed F. Adams's Kewpee Hotels partnership of Toledo, Ohio. About 1958, Harrison "Harry" E. Shutt went to work for Wilson at his Lima restaurant. In 1963, the Grand Rapids licensee locations were sold and separated from Kewpee as Mr. Fables.

Krystal (restaurant)

imageThe Krystal Company

Rody Davenport, Jr., J. Glenn Sherrill, Founders

Krystal is an American fast food restaurant chain headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It is known for its small, square hamburger sliders with steamed-in onions. Krystal moved its corporate headquarters from Chattanooga, Tennessee, where it had been based since 1932, to Atlanta in early 2013.

Founded on October 24, 1932, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during the first years of the Great Depression, entrepreneur Rody Davenport Jr. and partner J. Glenn Sherrill theorized that even in a severe economic upheaval, "People would patronize a restaurant that was kept spotlessly clean, where they could get a good meal with courteous service at the lowest possible price." The restaurant's first customer, French Jenkins, ordered six "Krystals" and a cup of coffee, all for the price of 35¢, thus proving their theory true.

Davenport had visited White Castle restaurants, taking notes of successful features, before setting forth on his own venture. Davenport and Sherrill set up the first Krystal at the corner of 7th and Cherry Streets in Chattanooga. The first Krystal was a modular building constructed in Chicago and shipped to Chattanooga for final installation. The oldest Krystal still in operation is located on Cherokee Boulevard in Chattanooga's Northshore District. Krystal is the seventh or eighth-oldest hamburger chain in the United States (the oldest being White Castle) and the oldest in the South.

Regarding the origins of the Krystal name, company legend states that Davenport and his wife were riding down a mountain road when Mrs. Mary McGee Davenport saw a lawn ornament in the shape of a crystal ball. While gazing at the lawn ornament, Mrs. Davenport commented that since Davenport and Sherrill felt cleanliness was a cornerstone of the concept, they should name the restaurant Crystal for "clean as a crystal" - yet with a "K" to add a little twist. Krystal's restaurants through the years often sported a crystal ball on the top.

MaDonal

MaDonal (Central Kurdish: مادۆنال‎) is a restaurant located in the town of Sulaymaniyah, Iraqi Kurdistan. It intentionally resembles the fast food chain McDonald's, both in appearance and menu; for instance, MaDonal's menu includes "Big Macks." It is one of two McDonald's-like restaurants in the town; the other one, Matbax, claims that MaDonal is "cheap quality".

The owner, Suleiman Qassab, was a fighter in the Kurdish resistance during the 1970s. He became a refugee in Vienna, Austria, where he got a job as a cook at McDonald's. In the 1990s, he applied for permits to create a McDonald's in Iraq, but the McDonald’s Corporation turned him down, due to economic sanctions imposed during the regime of Saddam Hussein, as well as the controlled economy of Iraq at the time.

In response, he established MaDonal Restaurant, which is still in business. Since establishing MaDonal, Qassab has offered free food to U.S. forces, been threatened, and has become a "Kurdish celebrity." Qassab hopes to one day turn MaDonal into an actual McDonald's restaurant.

MaDonal is popular with Sulaymaniyah's youth, and the upper middle class. It is open even during Ramadan.

Sociologist George Ritzer sees MaDonal as part of a trend of other countries developing their own regional variations of McDonald’s.Journalist Christopher Hitchens said it was "reassuring" to see signs of progress like MaDonal "in an atmosphere that only a few years ago was heavy with miasmic decay and the reek of poison gas."

MacDavid

MacDavid (Hebrew: מק דויד) is an Israeli fast food brand, that started in 1978 in Tel Aviv. After growing to a peak of 28 branches, many branches have closed, leaving one location, in Haifa.

The original branch was opened in 1978 on Tel Aviv's Frishman Street. In 1979 McDonald's sued MacDavid over name infringement. MacDavid claimed its name was dissimilar, stopped serving "Big Macs".

MacDavid expanded to a peak of 28 in 1989. In 1993 McDonald's Israel entered the market, and competitor Burgeranch expanded their presence, causing the number of MacDavid restaurants to decline.

By the year 2000 only four restaurants remained, with the locations in Eilat and Haifa still open by the end of 2010. In 2011 a new MacDavid company opened a branch in Nazareth Illit. More branches were planned to open soon after. This new and unrelated MacDavid was unsuccessful and the restaurant closed down.

In 2016 the Haifa branch of the original chain, opened 1982 on Trumpeldor Boulevard, continues to operate as the MacDavid's sole location.

Max Hamburgers

imageMax Hamburgerrestauranger AB

Max Hamburgerrestauranger AB (Max Hamburger Restaurants Incorporated) is a fast food corporation which was founded by Curt Bergfors in Gällivare, Sweden in 1968. Bergfors' oldest son Richard Bergfors is the current president since 2002.

Until the 1980s, Max was the largest hamburger restaurant chain in northern Sweden, with only a single restaurant outside of Norrland (on ). This changed during the 1990s, when they expanded to become a nationwide fast-food chain. By 2011, there were around 85 restaurants in Sweden, compared to just 40 five years earlier.

From 2005 to 2010, Max expanded extensively to the western parts of Sweden, and in 2010, plans were announced to expand to Riyadh and Dubai with Kuwait following. Three years later, Landmark Group were operating three Max restaurants in Dubai where the menu was modified to exclude bacon.

The first restaurant in Norway opened on May 12, 2011.

Max's relies on its Swedish heritage as a means of competing with the two major fast food-chains on the market, McDonald's and Burger King, but also embraces a multi-cultural image at the same time. Max has done advertising featuring children as well as adults with different ethnicity, dressed in traditional Swedish costumes (folkdräkt), and only music from Swedish artists are played in the restaurants, via the company's own radio channel.

Max does not only offer traditional hamburgers but also healthier alternatives like the Delifresh menus, which ranges from 4% to 12.5% fat, served like regular hamburgers in healthier bread with the usual accessories. It also sells its own brand of salad sauce, which is quite popular. Max also features low GI and gluten free menus.

Max offers free of charge WiFi access in most of their restaurants.

Max was the first hamburger restaurant ever to outcompete McDonald's restaurants, which happened in 1991 in Umeå and Luleå, where McDonald's (who were later to arrive in northern Sweden than in Sweden's major cities) in fact closed their restaurants before returning a few years later. In 2007, the popularity of Max forced the McDonald's in Skellefteå, Piteå and, again, in Luleå out of business.
