The company launched a city-wide contest which resulted in the name Spangles.

Some locations are open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 a.m. (drive through only) Hours for a typical store are from 6:30 a.m until 10:00 p.m. for the Dining room and 6:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. for drive through customers. Steers

imageSteers

Steers is one of South Africa’s most recognizable quick-service restaurant brands. The company is well known for serving flame-grilled burgers’ made from 100% pure beef and handmade chips. Other menu items include chicken burgers, ribs and Hero rolls as well as ice-creams and milkshakes.

Steers founder, George Halamandaris introduced the first steakhouse concept to South Africa after spending time in the United States. The name “Steers” evolved over the years from a variety of names, starting with Golden Spur, then Seven Steer followed by Branded Steer and Longhorn Steer.

The first ever Steers store was opened in 1970 by George’s son, John Halamandaris, in Jeppe, Johannesburg. John later joined forces with his four cousins, Panagiotis, Theofanis, Periklis and Charalambous Halamandaris. The early 80s saw the opening of a fourth Steers in Sandton City, which attracted interest from would-be franchisees. The other stores included Yeoville and Bellevue with a central kitchen in Johannesburg.

In the late 80s the Comitis family, who owned the Steers rights in the Western Cape, continued to grow the brand throughout Southern Africa. After decades of growth Steers became the most prominent fast food company in Southern Africa and the Comitis family sold their shares back to the Famous Brands parent company.

In 1983, Steers launched a new franchise programme. The owners placed a single advertisement in a local newspaper inviting franchisees to apply, and since then Steers has never had a shortage of prospective franchisees seeking to buy into the franchise. Within two years there were more than 15 outlets opened, and this number grew to 250 stores ten years later. By the end of the 90s Steers started expanding beyond South Africa’s borders, with outlets in Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Mauritius, Zambia, Tanzania and Ivory Coast. There are over 500 franchises across South Africa and Africa. A Steers restaurant opened on Lavender Hill, Battersea, London, UK in late July 2013.

For 17 years in a row, Steers has been recognized by well-known Johannesburg listing magazine, Leisure Options, for serving the Best Hamburger in the QSR industry. Steers has also won ‘best chips’ for 13 years running.

Webers

imageWebers

Webers is a hamburger restaurant on Ontario Highway 11 in Orillia, Ontario. Opened in July 1963, Webers grills their burgers over charcoal, with a grill man said to be able to flip up to 800 patties an hour. Long line ups are a common sight at the restaurant, which built a footbridge over the highway to provide access for guests from the southbound side. The restaurant's hamburger patties are also sold at Loblaws outlets.

As of 2009, Webers is reported to sell approximately 8000 hamburgers on a typically busy Friday. The restaurant is open weekends from Thanksgiving until Christmas, but closed from January to March break.

In 2013, Webers celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Webers was opened on July 11, 1963, by Paul Weber Sr., to cater to cottage goers. By the 1970s, it became so popular that patrons on the opposite side of the highway would often risk injury running across the street to the restaurant. In 1981, the province built a traffic barrier along the median of the highway in an effort to stop the jaywalking. Even so, travellers heading toward Toronto climbed over the waist-high wall to get their food. The following year, the province took further precaution by erecting a fence on top of the barrier. In 1983, Paul Weber Jr., the founder's son, bought a footbridge from a Toronto lawyer that was being used as part of the CN Tower's SkyWalk over Front Street to provide safe access to southbound travelers. This bridge has the distinction of being the first and only privately owned bridge spanning a public highway in Ontario. In 1987, Webers installed three CN train cars, retrofitted to house their own meat processing facility. They have since added two dining cars as well, which are open as places where customers can eat their food. The founder's sons eventually took over the business before their fathers death in 1994. Webers opened up additional restaurants in Barrie in the late 1980s; one in Orillia, off the highway, in 1995; and two outlets in Toronto Pearson International Airport in the late 1990s. These restaurants have since closed, leaving only the original location on Highway 11. In 2005, Webers began selling their frozen hamburgers through Loblaws.
