Max Hamburgers

imageMax Hamburgerrestauranger AB

Max Hamburgerrestauranger AB (Max Hamburger Restaurants Incorporated) is a fast food corporation which was founded by Curt Bergfors in Gällivare, Sweden in 1968. Bergfors' oldest son Richard Bergfors is the current president since 2002.

Until the 1980s, Max was the largest hamburger restaurant chain in northern Sweden, with only a single restaurant outside of Norrland (on ). This changed during the 1990s, when they expanded to become a nationwide fast-food chain. By 2011, there were around 85 restaurants in Sweden, compared to just 40 five years earlier.

From 2005 to 2010, Max expanded extensively to the western parts of Sweden, and in 2010, plans were announced to expand to Riyadh and Dubai with Kuwait following. Three years later, Landmark Group were operating three Max restaurants in Dubai where the menu was modified to exclude bacon.

The first restaurant in Norway opened on May 12, 2011.

Max's relies on its Swedish heritage as a means of competing with the two major fast food-chains on the market, McDonald's and Burger King, but also embraces a multi-cultural image at the same time. Max has done advertising featuring children as well as adults with different ethnicity, dressed in traditional Swedish costumes (folkdräkt), and only music from Swedish artists are played in the restaurants, via the company's own radio channel.

Max does not only offer traditional hamburgers but also healthier alternatives like the Delifresh menus, which ranges from 4% to 12.5% fat, served like regular hamburgers in healthier bread with the usual accessories. It also sells its own brand of salad sauce, which is quite popular. Max also features low GI and gluten free menus.

Max offers free of charge WiFi access in most of their restaurants.

Max was the first hamburger restaurant ever to outcompete McDonald's restaurants, which happened in 1991 in Umeå and Luleå, where McDonald's (who were later to arrive in northern Sweden than in Sweden's major cities) in fact closed their restaurants before returning a few years later. In 2007, the popularity of Max forced the McDonald's in Skellefteå, Piteå and, again, in Luleå out of business.

Meadows Frozen Custard

The Meadows Frozen Custard is a franchise founded on July 4th 1950 that specializes in frozen custard.

Delbert Meadows opened a small custard stand in Duncansville, Pennsylvania.[1] After decades of business, the Meadows brothers decided to add batting cages, mini golf, and go-karts to their location. Now considered a landmark in western Pennsylvania, the Duncansville location is still in operation and owned by Dick, Jay and Joel Meadows, sons of Delbert Meadows.

The frozen custard is an original recipe that has been in the Meadows family for decades. On July 4th 1950 the Meadows brothers, J.V., Richard and Delbert, worked with Seal-Test dairy to come up with a unique frozen custard recipe that is still used today. When Seal-Test dairy went out of business the recipe was then transferred to Galliker's Dairy who is now in charge of the production. The Meadows menu includes shakes, sundaes, arctic swirls, banana splits, root beer floats, strawberry shortcakes, smoothies, and cones.

In 2003, the Meadows brothers (Dick, Jay, and Joe) sold the Meadows franchise to Gardner Meadows Inc. Since the purchase of the Meadows franchise, Gardner Meadows Inc. has opened 12 franchises and have 9 in current development. These franchises are located across Pennsylvania and Maryland. Demand has caused more franchises to form, each individually owned and operated. Over fifty years later each Meadows location still serves the same recipe that got its start in 1950. Locations include: Bedford, Pennsylvania, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Clarion, Pennsylvania, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Columbia, Maryland, Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, DuBois, Pennsylvania, Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, Enola, Pennsylvania, Frederick, Maryland, Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Greenwood (Altoona), Pennsylvania, Hagerstown, Maryland, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Hollidaysburg (Duncansville), Pennsylvania, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Monroeville, Pennsylvania, Oak Ridge, North Carolina, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, York, Pennsylvania, Ashburn, Virginia. The original location in Hollidaysburg is currently being rebuilt, opening April 18, 2014.

Mister Softee

imageMister Softee

Mister Softee is a United States-based ice cream truck franchisor popular in the Northeast. It was founded by William Conway and James Conway (October 30, 1927 – May 28, 2006) in 1956 in Philadelphia and is one of the largest franchisors of soft ice cream in the United States, with about 350 franchisees operating 600 trucks in 15 states. The company is headquartered in Runnemede, New Jersey and is still run by the Conway family; John Conway, Jr. is now President.

The instrumental jingle played by Mister Softee trucks is based on "The Whistler and His Dog" (1960) by Lester Morton "Les" Waas. A copy of the sheet music and all the words can be found on the Mister Softee website. Waas, who created close to 1,000 jingles in his lifetime, died in April 2016.

The Mr. Softee jingle is written in E-flat major with 6/8 time. However, many of the trucks play a version that sounds almost as if it is transposed up a half step, in E major, though still with the 6/8 time. In New York City, the trucks are permitted to only play the jingle while moving, to reduce noise.

In June 1961, Doug Quattlebaum, an American Piedmont blues guitarist, singer and songwriter, was 're-discovered' playing popular and blues songs through the public address system of his Mister Softee ice cream van. The blues historian, Pete Welding, who became known for discovering talent in unusual places, heard his performances and arranged for him to record an album. Released by Bluesville Records, Softee Man Blues (1963) had a photograph of Quattlebaum in his ice cream uniform on its front cover.

Mister Softee has in recent years defended its trademarks in well-publicized cases. In 2015 Mister Softee won a trademark infringement case in federal court against Dimitrios Tsirkos, a former Mister Softee franchisee in New York who had been operating a competing ice cream vending operation called "Master Softee." The next year, Mister Softee won a case against Dimitrios Konstantakakos, owner of "New York Ice Cream," preventing him from using the iconic Mister Softee jingle. With respect to defending the trademarks, Mister Softee vice president Jim Conway has stated, "For 58 years we’ve spent our time, energy, and money developing brands. We’re one of the most recognized brands. The people who are infringing on our trademark are not only hurting Mr. Softee, but also hurting our mom and pop franchisees. We take these actions to protect them as much to protect our own brand."
