In 1930, a hot dog vendor in Philadelphia specifically in Little Italy look at his cart. He came to the conclusion that he was tired of hot dogs. In that case he decides to buy sliced steak. He grills it up with some onions and puts everything together in a bun. As he was about to eat it a man walked up to him and offered him a nickel. Green Burrito

Green Burrito is an American fast-food restaurant chain run by CKE Restaurants, located mostly in the Western and Southwestern United States and serving fast-food Tex-Mex.

Originally, Green Burrito was an independent restaurant in Hawaiian Gardens, California. Ruben Rodriguez purchased it in 1980, and turned it into a chain, whose parent company Santa Barbara Restaurant Group was acquired by CKE in 2001.

CKE's policy has been to add Green Burrito dual-branding to many of their Carl's Jr. hamburger restaurants, thereby adding a Mexican menu. As of 2008, there were 300 co-branded Green Burrito/Carl's Jr. restaurants.

CKE later introduced the identical Red Burrito for its Hardee's chain, which primarily serves the Midwestern and Southern United States.

H. Salt Esquire

H. Salt Esquire is a Monterey Park, California-based fast food restaurant chain which specializes in fish and chips. The chain joined with KFC in 1969 to expand its operations throughout the United States.

H. Salt Esq. was first opened in California in 1965 under the name Salt's Fish & Chips and was founded by Haddon Salt. The H. Salt Esq. website gives the following historical background of the company:

Haddon Salt operated his fish and chips store in Skegness, in the northeastern corner of England, as his father had before him. Americans passing through were taken by the taste of Salt's "non-greasy" fish & chips. Persuaded by the American enthusiasm for his fish, he and his wife Grace came to the United States and opened their first shop in Sausalito, California, under the name of "Salt's Fish & Chips." The year was 1965. Although the shops were successful, the name Salt's Fish & Chips was not right. When Haddon consulted an advertising firm, it was suggested that he use the initial of his first name and add "Esq." for an English touch. The name of the new operation became "H. Salt, Esq. Authentic English Fish and Chips."

KFC entered a joint-venture with H. Salt in 1969. It sold off the chain in 1980.

Currently there are 26 independently owned franchise locations throughout southern California and one in northern California (Sacramento).

While there were once 50 or 60 locations in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada, area, all that remains in Canada today are two seasonal outlets that operate for 18 days a year at the Food Building during the Canadian National Exhibition.

The Habit Burger Grill

imageHabit Restaurants Inc.

The Habit Burger Grill, commonly referred to as The Habit, is an American fast casual restaurant chain focused on hamburgers, salads, sandwiches, shakes, and french fries. Its headquarters is in Irvine, California. The first Habit Burger Grill restaurant opened in November 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. Between 1969 and 2007, the chain slowly expanded around the Los Angeles metropolitan area to 23 restaurants.

In 2007, a private equity firm, KarpReilly, purchased a majority stake in the company, and the chain rapidly expanded. By 2014, it had 109 locations either open for business or under construction. The company is one of the fastest-growing fast food chains in the United States, with a 40% sales increase from 2012 to 2013.

The Habit Burger Grill was founded in November 15, 1969 in Goleta, California as a family-owned business. In 2007, it was purchased by KarpReilly, a private equity firm that began to rapidly expand the chain, including franchising. Multiple newspapers reported in 2013 that Habit Burger LLC, the parent company to the chain, was planning an IPO. On November 19, 2014 the company raised $83.7 million in an initial public offering (IPO).

The Habit offers items such as hamburgers, salads, sandwiches, shakes, and french fries. Their most popular item is their signature hamburger called the "Charburger", containing a fresh ground beef patty with "mayonnaise, pickle, fresh tomato, lettuce and caramelized onions on a toasted bun." The Habit also offers variants of the Charburger containing ingredients such as pineapple, mushrooms, and avocado.

The Habit Burger Grill currently has at least 189 restaurants established or near completion. The majority of their 144 locations are in California, but they also have locations in other Southwestern states and along the East Coast. They plan to open multiple locations in places such as Houston, TX, Las Vegas and Seattle. In early 2015, they announced plans begin construction in Northern Virginia.

Halo Burger

imageHalo Country, LLC

Halo Burger, formerly known by its full name Bill Thomas' Halo Burger, is a fast-food restaurant chain based in Genesee County, Michigan owned by Halo Country, LLC. Begun in 1923 as the original Kewpee location and separating from the Kewpee chain in 1967 with two locations, the chain has since grown to seventeen locations in the region.

It is not easy to determine a single founding date for the company because the company evolved from the original Kewpee location opened in 1923 which expanded into a chain before 1944, when Thomas started his business that would later be named Halo Burgers by leasing the original location.

Samuel V. Blair opened Kewpee Hotel restaurant in downtown Flint and expanded to approximately 400 locations by 1939 through licensing the name. William "Bill" V. Thomas started working at Kewpee in 1938. Thomas began leasing the original Harrison Street, Flint location from Blair upon his retirement on April 1, 1944. Blair died in 1945 and Thomas continued to lease the location and pay royalties for use of the Kewpee name from the estate until the Kewpee trademark and Blair estate owned locations went up for sale in 1958. Thomas was able to purchase the Flint location but the Kewpee trademark was sold to Ed Adams of Toledo, Ohio. Thomas expanded with a second Kewpee location downtown Flint with the purchase of Vernor's Ginger Ale building in 1951.

Adams switched from a trademark license of Kewpee to a full franchising arrangement in 1967. Thomas rejected this new arrangement and changed the name of his restaurants to Bill Thomas' Halo Burger. Halo Burgers' first location only under the Halo Burger name opens in 1973 on Linden Road. But during construction, Bill Thomas died that year. In 1976, two more locations join the chain on West Pierson Road and in downtown Grand Blanc at a former Perkins Pancake House. In 1979, the Harrison location was vacated to make way for University of Michigan-Flint parking. The staff of the former Harrison Street location were transferred to a newly opened Halo Burger serving Flint's east side.

Happi House

Happi House is a quick service teriyaki restaurant concept established on February 29, 1976, in San Jose's Japantown neighborhood. Happi House Restaurants, Inc. owns and operates Happi House Teriyaki restaurants throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and Happi House Franchise Corporation is responsible for franchising. The chain's motto is "Where East Meets Fresh," in reference to preparing each meal to order rather than serving pre-prepared items from steam tables. Newer Happi House restaurants range between 2,000 and 2,500 square feet (230 m2) are designed to look and feel like a modern Asian bistro.

Joe Ikeda and his business partners, Carlo Besio and Richard Tanaka, were inspired by the foods served during traditional Japanese festivals, and wanted to bring those flavors to the public on a daily basis in a casual and affordable restaurant setting. The original Happi House Teriyaki restaurant opened February 29, 1976 in San Jose, California's Japantown, at the corner of Fifth Street and Taylor Avenue. It was located just a block from the heart of the annual Obon Festival.

Happi House took its name from the traditional Japanese garment the "Happi Coat," which is a colorful cotton jacket worn during festivals and celebrations. The three founders chose the name because the original inspiration for the chain were the foods served at Japanese festivals where Happi Coats are customary attire. The first uniforms worn by Happi House employees were happi coats; each hand-sewn by a family member.

During the 1980s and 1990s the chain expanded by franchising and building several company-owned units throughout the Bay Area. However, Happi House stopped franchising and closed several units after its first attempt at franchising, in an effort to gain greater control over its operations. In 2007 the company installed a new leadership team, headed up by Chief Executive Officer, Joshua Richman, to grow the brand and return it to franchising. Richman is a concept developer with restaurant and franchise development experience, joining Happi House after serving as President and CEO of Straw Hat Pizza.

Happi House Franchise Corporation was created in 2008 and is now actively engaged in franchising after re-developing and modernizing several key aspects of the brand, including menu and service systems, marketing, and store design.
