Circle K

imageCircle K Stores, Inc.

Circle K is an international chain of convenience stores, founded in 1951 in El Paso, Texas, United States. It is owned and operated by the Canadian-based Alimentation Couche-Tard. Today it is present in most of the US 50 states, all Canadian provinces and a number of European countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, and the Republic of Ireland). In Asia and Latin America the brand is used by franchisees.

Since the 1980s, Circle K has been the largest company-owned convenience-store chain (i.e. of non-franchised stores) in the U.S. It was second in overall number of U.S. stores to 7-Eleven. However, by 1989, it faced strong competition from convenience stores owned by oil companies, and Circle K declared bankruptcy in 1990. By July 2010, Circle K had dropped to fourth rank in number of stores (3,455), then behind BP (4,730 stores) and Shell (4,630 convenience stores).

Some Circle K stores operate gasoline pumps selling Union 76-branded motor fuels; others sell Mobil, Marathon, Phillips 66, Irving, BP, Sunoco or Shell-branded fuel. Until mid-2006, nearly all Circle K stores in South Texas sold Citgo-branded fuel; however, those stores have dropped the Circle K name and now operate as Stripes Convenience Stores and are served by Valero-branded fuel. Circle K stores in northeast Ohio vary depending upon what stores they used to be: the majority are former Citgo/Holland Oil, whose gas is branded as Circle K; others are remnants of the Lawson's/Dairy Mart chain, which sell gas from other companies (most of them served Marathon Gasoline). Some locations, especially older outlets in the company's core markets of the American Southwest, do not sell gasoline.

Clover Food Lab

imageClover Food Lab

Clover Food Lab is a fast food chain, founded in 2008 by MIT material science graduate and Harvard MBA Ayr Muir, which operates through food trucks and restaurants in Cambridge, Brookline, and Boston, Massachusetts, United States. The company serves a simple menu that changes day to day and with the seasons based on what is available from local farmers and includes a large mix of organic ingredients. The company's food and novel approach to business have been well reviewed in local and national press.

The company began in September 2008 as one food truck serving the area around the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As of fall 2011, Clover Food Lab had some 70 employees operating in 11 locations, including two Cambridge restaurants (Harvard Square and Inman Square) and six food trucks stationed near MIT, Boston University, Boston's South End neighborhood, Longwood Medical Area, Government Center, Boston Common, Dewey Square and other locations in greater Cambridge.

The company was founded by Ayr Muir, a graduate of MIT in Material Science and Harvard Business School MBA program. Muir, a distant cousin of naturalist John Muir, has cited environmental motivations as a driving force behind the company's creation. He wishes "to shrink the ecological footprint of the food industry by making fresh, local, sustainable vegetarian food as common and convenient as the fare at Burger King or McDonald's". The company's food trucks are decommissioned and retrofitted cargo vehicles that use recycled vegetable oil to help them run. All of the company's utensils, napkins, and other items are compostable. Despite Clover Food Lab's focus on local, sustainable and vegetarian food, Muir consciously avoids branding the company's food as such, fearing that "no one will eat it if we do".

While most locations are franchises, Cluck-U also operates corporate-owned stores, featuring a more limited menu, under the name "Cluckster's."

Cluck-U Chicken was started by Robert Ilvento in 1985 when he was a sophomore in college. The first location was in New Brunswick, New Jersey at Rutgers University.

Cold Stone Creamery

imageCold Stone Creamery

Cold Stone Creamery is an American-based ice cream parlor chain. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, the company is owned and operated by Kahala Brands. The company's main product is premium ice cream made with approximately 12–14% butterfat, made on location and customized for patrons at time of order. Cold Stone has also expanded its menu with other ice cream related products, including: ice cream cakes, pies, cookie sandwiches, smoothies, shakes and iced or blended coffee drinks.

Since 2008, the company has been co-branding its locations with other chains in an attempt to not only increase its presence outside of the United States, but transform its business model from seasonal to year-round.

The Company was co-founded in 1988 by Donald and Susan Sutherland, who sought ice cream that was neither hard-packed nor soft-serve. Publicity materials describe it as "smooth and creamy super-premium ice cream." Cold Stone Creamery opened its first store that year in Tempe, Arizona. The original Cold Stone Creamery, store #0001, is in operation today near the same intersection (southwest corner of McClintock & Southern) as the original Tempe location. The store moved from the original location to the current location in the early 1990s.

The Company has maintained the same original business model created by Steve Herrell who founded Steve's Ice Cream. Patrons first select what flavor of ice cream they would like and then choose from a plethora of mix-ins available to be folded into their ice cream. Mix-ins can include, but are not limited to: candies, nuts, brownies and/or syrups. Cold Stone's derives its name from the frozen granite slab that the team members use to fold your mix-ins into the ice cream. The concept is similar to the Marble Slab Creamery, the inventor of mixing ice cream on a frozen stone slab (founded in 1983), which was also inspired by Steve Herrell and was operating in the Phoenix metro area in the late 1980s.

In 1995, Cold Stone Creamery opened its first franchise store in Tucson, Arizona. Shortly after, a second location (first out of state) was opened in Camarillo, California. Cold Stone Creamery is now the sixth bestselling brand of ice cream in the US and operates stores in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand,Brazil Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Guam, China, Mexico, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kenya,Trinidad and Tobago, Qatar, Nigeria, Kuwait, The Philippines, Singapore, Turkey and Bangladesh. In 2008, Cold Stone opened its first European franchise in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three more stores were later opened in other parts of the country. In January 2006, the Company was named the 11th fastest-growing franchise by Entrepreneur magazine. In June 2009, the Company opened its first locations in Canada, Mississauga and Ontario. As of 2015 there is one location in Toronto and only Canadian location. As of 2012, three stores had opened in Singapore. In March 2015, Cold Stone opened its first location in Turkey's capital Ankara. In 2015 Cold Stone Creamery opened its first location in El Salvador in Multiplaza Mall. As of 2017, there are two stores in Dhaka in Bangladesh; at Gulshan and Dhanmondi.

Cottage Inn Pizza

imageCottage Inn Pizza

Cottage Inn Pizza is an American regional franchise pizza delivery corporation headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The first Cottage Inn restaurant opened in Ann Arbor in 1948 and remains the company's flagship today. There are currently over 50 franchised stores in Michigan and Ohio.

The first Cottage Inn restaurant, opened in 1948, still stands in its original location at 512 East William, Ann Arbor. Although it started as a coffee shop, pizza was introduced in 1959. It has the distinction of being the first restaurant in Ann Arbor to serve pizza. The current owner acquired the building in 1961.

The restaurant went through renovations in 1975, 1980, and 1987. In 1993, the restaurant expanded again to include a second floor and banquet room facilities. Due to its proximity to the University of Michigan campus, the Original Cottage Inn is often frequented by students and visitors. The restaurant also has an established relationship with the Ann Arbor community, participating in community service events such as feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving.

In early 2014, Cottage Inn announced a plan to expand nationally using a franchising business model. The company is accepting applications from potential franchisees through their franchising website.

By 1978, Cottage Inn's continued growth required the formation of a second company to devote to delivery services. As a result, Cottage Inn Carryout & Delivery, Inc. was established. The first Cottage Inn store under this new company was founded at Packard and Hill streets in Ann Arbor. In June 1986, the first franchise opened in Ypsilanti. In 2003, the new corporate headquarters and distribution center opened in Ann Arbor.

Cottage Inn offers a variety of pizza, perhaps most well known for their specialty gourmet pizzas, along with various crust styles and toppings. Additional menu items include Italian-American entrees, salads, sandwiches, breadsticks, beverages, and desserts.

In 2009, Cottage Inn expanded its menu to include gluten free pizzas and cheese bread due to a growing demand for pizza from customers who suffer from celiac disease. The Brighton location was the first to introduce gluten free pizza, which has since spread to the rest of the Cottage Inn locations. In May 2013, Cottage Inn launched gluten free sandwiches.

Cousins Subs

imageCousins Submarines

Cousins Submarines, better known as Cousins Subs, is a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based sub sandwich shop who was founded in 1972. Cousins Subs is a regional chain with restaurants in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Arizona.

Cousins Subs was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1972 by cousins Bill Specht and James Sheppard, who could not find a suitable sub sandwich option in Milwaukee like they had when they lived in New Jersey.

Specht and Sheppard opened their first restaurant in Milwaukee, which was located at 60th Street and Silver Spring Drive. After opening the shop, they partnered with a local baker to make their own bread, highlighted in the slogan "Better Bread, Better Subs". A large segment of customers during Cousins' early years were former East Coast residents.

In 2009, Cousins announced a marketing initiative to focus on the local side of the business. During the Great Recession, Cousins closed over 40 locations in an effort to focus on quality.

Christine Specht-Palmert, daughter of co-founder Bill Specht, took over as CEO in 2015 when her father retired.

Cousins Subs announced another rebranding in 2016 that includes expanding their footprint to Midwest metropolitan areas; remodeling all locations to its Milwaukee Sub Shop to unify the brand; updating its exterior design, logo, packaging and uniform designs; and offering improved in-store experience for its guests. Along with the remodel, Cousins struck sponsorship agreements with the Milwaukee Bucks, Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Wisconsin Badgers. It has also worked with separate real estate firms to look into new markets like Madison, Wisconsin.

By investing in these key areas, Cousins Subs is reimagining the brand to thrive in existing markets and launch its fast casual restaurant concept nationally.

As of May 2017, Cousins operates 95 stores in Wisconsin and two in Arizona. The Milwaukee area stores are corporately owned but the rest are all franchises.
