Beswick is an area of the city of Manchester, in North West England. Historically in Lancashire, it neighbours the district of Bradford to the east and the two areas are sometimes referred to as Bradford-with-Beswick. The River Medlock and the Ashton Canal both run through it.
For the 2002 Commonwealth Games. the area was transformed with the construction of the new Manchester City football stadium. After the stadium was built further sporting facilities were developed as well as the National Cycling Centre, Regional Athletics Centre and the National Squash & Tennis Centre resulting in the area being named Sportcity.
In addition to the new Academy, Beswick benefits from public community facilities, which are open for all residents to use Etihad Campus, including the Etihad Stadium and SportCity, new leisure centre offering a swimming pool and rugby pitch; Connell Sixth Form College, an institute of health and performance, shops and rugby pitch for use by the local community and athletes.
The Manchester authorities are working with Abu Dhabi United Group, owners of Manchester City FC, to regenerate the surrounding areas near the stadium.
Under the plans the area will get £1bn of investment over a 10-year period starting from 2015 pending planning permission.
Manchester Life Development Company, a joint venture between the council and Abu Dhabi United Group, said at least 830 new homes would be built under the first phase of the project.
Philips Park offers 31 acres of parkland on the doorstep of Beswick and was awarded Green Flag status by the Civic Trust in 2009
Located in the heart of east Manchester and within the Medlock Valley, it provides a unique mix of woodland, wild grassland, water and rolling hills. The park's other facilities include a Visitor Centre, park warden service, toilets, children's play area, hard standing ball court, junior football pitch, allotments, community orchard, bowling green and pavilion, a show-field for events, picnic area, seating and quiet areas along with a pond and dipping platform.
