Gastón Gaudio was the defending champion, but lost in the fourth round to David Ferrer.

Rafael Nadal won in the final 6–7(6–8), 6–3, 6–1, 7–5 in his first French Open appearance, as well as his first grand slam final against Mariano Puerta, who also played in his first (and only) grand slam final. This was the beginning of an unprecedented run of success in Roland Garros for Nadal, who would go on to win the tournament a record nine times.
