Justine Henin-Hardenne claimed the title, defeating home player Mary Pierce in the final, 6–1, 6–1. This was Henin-Hardenne's second French Open, and her first in a string of three consecutive.
This was the first French Open main draw which future champion Ana Ivanovic competed in. In just her second Grand Slam main draw appearance (and first as a seeded player), she reached the quarter-finals, losing to Nadia Petrova after defeating hometown player Amélie Mauresmo in the third round.
