Justine Henin-Hardenne was the defending champion, but she was upset in the second round by Tathiana Garbin. This was Henin-Hardenne's only loss at the French Open between 2003 and 2007.

Anastasia Myskina won her maiden Grand Slam title and defeated Elena Dementieva in the final, who was also in her maiden Slam final, despite previously having never passed the second round. Myskina became the first Russian woman to win a Major. This was the first time two Grand Slam finalists competed each other in the final since the 1979 Australian Open.

Martina Navratilova played in her first grand slam for 10 years, having been awarded a wild card, it would also be her final French Open singles appearance.

This was also the first Grand Slam tournament in which future two-time champion Maria Sharapova reached the quarter-finals.
