Golden Flake

imageGolden Flake

Golden Flake Snack Foods, a wholly owned subsidiary of Golden Enterprises, is a producer of potato chips, tortilla chips, corn chips, cheese curls, fried pork skins, and other snack foods in the southern United States.

The Golden Flake brand (originally known as Magic City Foods) was established in the 1920s by Mose Lischkoff and Frank Mosher in a Birmingham, Alabama grocery store basement. The company changed its name from Magic City Foods to Golden Flake, Inc. in 1956 after having been bought and sold by several different owners. In 1968, the company went public, changing its name again to Golden Enterprises, Inc. It is still publicly traded today, listed in the NASDAQ under the symbol "GLDC".

One of its most famous spokesman was Paul "Bear" Bryant, the legendary head football coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide. For years, the potato chips, along with Coca-Cola, were marketed with the slogan, "'Great Pair' says 'the Bear'".

On July 19, 2016, Golden Flake announced that it was being acquired by Utz Quality Foods for $12.00 per share in cash, representing a 71% premium over the average 30 day trading price of $7.00.

In 2010, John S. Stein retired as Chairman of the Board of Golden Enterprises. In honor of his many years of leadership, Stein was named Chairman Emeritus of the Golden Enterprises Board of Directors. Mark McCutcheon was elected as the new Chairman.

Golden Wonder

imageGolden Wonder

Golden Wonder is a British company that manufactures snack foods, most notably crisps. These include Ringo's, Golden Wonder and Transform-A-Snack. Since 2006 it has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Northern Irish company Tayto, after being rescued out of administration.

Founded in in 1947 by the Scottish bakery owner William Alexander, the company was named after the Golden Wonder potato. The company originally had five manufacturing sites. Four sites produced crisps, two in Scotland and two in England (Widnes and Corby). The Welsh site at Crumlin produced the "Pot Noodle". The company was owned by various parent companies including Imperial Tobacco, Hanson plc, and was then acquired by UK-based Dalgety plc in 1987. Its notable brands have included,"Wotsits", "Ringos", "Jungle Fresh" peanuts and Pot Noodle, which ceased to carry Golden Wonder branding after the brand (but not the manufacturing business itself) was sold to Unilever. In July 1995 Best Foods paid Dalgety plc about $280 million for its Golden Wonder Pot Noodle instant hot snacks manufacturing business.

In 2006, the company was bought by Tayto.

Golden Wonder now produces a number of different flavours of potato crisp. It is also the current owner of the XL Crisp brand. Golden Wonder was the former owner of the Wotsits brand, but when the company changed hands in 2002, it was sold off separately to their rival Walkers. Previous snacks Wheat Crunchies, Chips & Burgers and the corn based Nik Naks are now owned by KP.

The company launched the cheese & onion crisp flavour in 1962. This was their first flavoured crisp, the concept having been devised by Tayto in Ireland (not the same company as that which bought Golden Wonder over in 2006) in 1953.

Heluva Good!

imageHeluva Good!

Heluva Good! is an American company specializing in cheeses, chip dips, sour cream and condiments. It has been a subsidiary of dairy company HP Hood LLC since the acquisition of Crowley Foods in 2004. The primary offices for the company are in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. Heluva Good! products are sold in grocery stores throughout much of the United States and Canada. A Heluva Good! Country Store was located in Wallington, New York, just east of the village of Sodus which first opened in 1980. All cheese products were packaged at a plant in Sodus, New York. Both locations closed on June 26, 2015.

Heluva Good! was founded by Sodus resident Perry Messinger in 1925, when he started making washed curd cheese as a hobby in the basement of A.B. Williams Company for which he owned and managed at the time. Regarding the name origin, a traveling salesman stopped by Messinger's store one day and sampled a wedge of cheese. "Boy, that's a hell of a good cheese," the salesman said after tasting it. Messinger would open a cheese shop in 1939 which officially established the company. Its present name would be registered the following year after an issue with government regulators regarding the application.

Messinger was known for his humorous side. His executive officers for the company were listed: Father Time as President; Death and Taxes as Treasurer; Geo. Experience as Secretary. The face of Father Time adorned the packaging of Heluva Good! products for over half a century. Business was kept small and family oriented for a number of years. Despite this, his products had attracted notable customers including Franklin D. Roosevelt and Jimmy Doolittle.
