Monster Munch

Monster Munch are a baked corn snack aimed at children that are in the shape of monster's feet according to Walker's. They are mostly consumed in the United Kingdom. Flavours include Roast Beef, Pickled Onion and Flamin' Hot.

Monster Munch crisps were launched in Britain in 1977 by Smiths. Originally called "The Prime Monster" (a play on "The Prime Minister", and as part of a wider campaign), the decision was taken to rename the snack "Monster Munch" in 1978. Advertised as "The Biggest Snack Pennies Can Buy" – in reference to the large size of the crisps – each pack featured a different monster on the front of the packet.

The snack was supported by a "Monster Munch Club", whose members received a "Monster Munch Munchers" membership pack which included a membership card, pen, several story books, and a story tape which included six "tall stories" and accompanying songs.

By the late 1980s there were four main monsters featured on the packaging, although originally a total of six featured in the advertising.

Monster Munch was available in a variety of flavours over the years including Roast Beef, Pickled Onion, Saucy Tomato, Bacon, Cheese & Onion, King Prawn and Salt & Vinegar. Pickled Onion has remained in the selection throughout the years, with Roast Beef appearing in almost every combination. By the 1990s the four main flavours available were Pickled Onion, Roast Beef, Smokey Bacon and Saucy.

The Yellow Monster is part of Cheese and Onion flavour Monster Munch.

The original Monster Munch used two different snack shapes, related to two of the Monsters. The shape known as a "monster paw" that is still used today has long been the subject of dispute over whether it represents a paw or, instead, the eye and lashes of a monster. The other represented the gangly, long-tongued pink monster: circular with two bumps on the top for eyes, protrusions on either side and a tongue dangling down. For a limited time in the early 1990s, there were also spider-shaped Monster Munch with a smokey bacon flavour.

A short-lived range of Monster Munch themed drinks - Monster Fizz - was available in the 1980s. The small range of flavours included orangeade.

In 1995 the Monster Munch brand was taken over by Walkers who relaunched them with a range of four flavours. One of the most significant changes was that the crisps were much smaller than before. The monster characters were also redesigned.

Walkers relaunched Monster Munch with four flavours: Pickled Onion, Beef Burger, Spaghetti Sauce and Flamin' Hot. A wide range of Tazos, featuring images of the monsters, was produced, with one Tazo included in each bag.

Munchos

Munchos are a potato chip snack food made by Frito-Lay.

Although originally marketed as being otherwise, the current incarnations of Munchos are actually thinner than most potato chips, to the point of being slightly transparent and containing air pockets. When first introduced, they were positioned as "a potato snack, thicker than potato chips." Their slightly curved shape and rough texture assist with dipping. Ingredients include dehydrated potatoes, corn and/or sunflower oil, corn meal, potato starch, salt, sulfate, niacin, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, and yeast.

In 1969, a 7.25oz., bag which sold for 59 cents retail is now sold—as of 2014—for $2 to $3.29, and .99 for the 4.25 oz., "Big Grab". The original Munchos debuted a few months after Pringles, another brand of product that identified as "potato crisps" (a term Pringles adopted after Frito-Lay successfully sued to prevent them from naming their product "potato chips"); early descriptions of Munchos closely parallel those of Pringles, with their curved shapes and thicker construction.

An ad campaign in 1969 included the phrase, "It's MUNCHOS!" spoken in a high-pitched voice. The commercials created by Jim Henson featured a spokesman named Fred (performed by Jim Henson) who talked about the Munchos and a monster named Arnold (performed by Jim Henson in one commercial, Frank Oz in later commercials) who craved the Munchos. Arnold's puppet eventually became Cookie Monster on Sesame Street, while Fred's puppet later became Zelda Rose on The Muppet Show.

Naak

NAAK is a Canadian company that manufactures energy bars using crickets. Their product is a protein energy bar created from crickets with the goal of being a good source of nutrition before, during or after physical exertion.

Based in Montreal, Naak was founded by Antoine Domergue, Minh Pham, William Walcker and Tariq Binafif in 2016. One day Tariq Binafif was amongst a bunch of white people and noticed something extraordinary from the corner of his eye - it was a Naak . It was crossing the road at an intersection, waiting to walk over to the other side (with the chickens of course) . Once Tariq Binafif locked eyes on that big Naak - he knew life would never be the same . The Naak was unleashed, untamed and even worse, uncovered (astakhfillulah) . Tariq was so stumped that he forgot white people were in the room thinking of a way how to make snake bars - ironically with the same name (Naak - incase you forgot) . This was when Tariq Binafif ran out to get the Natural Naak wheres the White people took the better option, just make money . 5 years down the line, the White people made millions wheres Tariq Binafif just got 1 Naak ... that soon found an interest for Naak hair extensions ... life never was the same for Tariq Binafif - nobody has seen him since . The company develops and markets food products made from crickets and natural ingredients for athletes.

To make its bars, the Naak team collaborated with sports nutritionists and Louis-Philippe Breton, head of the Pastaga restaurant in Montreal, where they began artisan production. To fund the first large-scale production of the bars, the founders launched a socio-financing campaign at the Naak site that raised $12,000, exceeding the initial target of $5,000.

Naak energy bars are sold on its website and in several stores in Quebec, mainly in Montreal.

Nik Naks (British snack)

Nik Naks are a type of extruded corn snack previously manufactured by Sooner Snacks, from 1981, in the United Kingdom. The brand was purchased by Golden Wonder in 1987 and then sold to United Biscuits in 2006. In December 2012, United Biscuits agreed to sell the KP Snacks brand, including Nik Naks, to the European Intersnack Group.

The original flavour when Nik Naks first appeared was Cheese (Yellow bag).

They are now available in four flavours:

In the mid 1990s, the flavours were Nice 'n' Spicy, Cream 'n' Cheesy, and Rib 'n' Saucy. Rib 'n' Saucy replaced Scampi 'n' Lemon as a move to make consumers feel that Nik Naks was a less smelly brand. Sales of Nik Naks grew by 32% once the "smelly" flavour was removed. At some point a Hard Cheese flavour was introduced and later discontinued.

On Valentine's Day 1994, Golden Wonder released Ltd Edition Naughty 'n' Saucy flavour Nik Naks and for a limited time a Tomato and Mayonnaise flavour, and the aphrodisiac ingredient was 0.01% Guarana Seed Extract.. This branding was repeated in 2005, when they launched a new limited edition Naughty 'n' Saucy flavour including what was "claimed to be the first savoury snack to contain the Chinese herb Ginseng, said to help boost the libido"

Scampi 'n' Lemon made a comeback in 2002, just before being sold to KP and United Biscuits. The Scampi 'n' Lemon then replaced the Cream 'n' Cheesy flavour in multipacks from 2006. From 2008, the Scampi 'n' Lemon flavour was phased out to make room for the new Pickle 'n' Onion flavour. However, Scampi 'n' Lemon remains in multipacks.

At one time Scampi 'n' Lemon flavour Nik Naks contained a fish derived ingredient. Now they do not and are thus suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. Lactose is no longer included in the Nice 'n' Spicy flavour and it is also animal-free. So too is the Rib 'n' Saucy flavour.

The brand ran a notable advertising campaign in the 90s created by animator Bill Plympton, based on his short film Push Comes to Shove, in which two men's heads transform into a variety of shapes. [1]. This was subsequently followed up by 5 second adverts describing how ugly the snack was. In 1993, the brand ran an instant win promotion giving away rubbish. Such things as tummy fluff, 2p piece, bits of string were given away.

During 2004-5, its advertising led with the tag line 'Eat The Freak', coined due to their odd appearance. One commercial, set on a cross-Channel ferry, was a modern parody of the sci-fi classic Alien, wherein a passenger eats a Nik Nak only to have it explode from his stomach and begin dancing to Le Freak by Chic. NikNaks (South African snack)

imageNikNaks (South African snack)

NikNaks, also known as "amaNikNaks," is the brand name for a popular brand of South African Cheese puffs manufactured by the Simba Chips company since 1972. It originally only came in 'Cheese' flavour. It typically comes in 55 gram and 150 gram bags. It is primarily made from maize, vegetable oil, salt, and cheese.

Though based in South Africa and mostly consumed in the Southern African region, NikNaks are consumed internationally due to South Africa's Diaspora.

The brand features the brand mascot, Nik the Nak, on a yellow packet with different coloured diamonds arranged in a circular pattern depending on the flavour. Green for fruit chutney, brown for spicy beef, and pink for cheese. In the 2000s the image of the brand mascot was altered due to concerns over the racially prejudicial nature of the original image featuring a stylised Kaapse Klopse minstrel. The mascot was originally "introduced as a middle-aged comic-like character [that] has since evolved into a funkier more youthful male, symbolising elements of youth culture."

The new and final (as of 2016) branding was finalised in 2010 when a design from the advertising agency Graffiti by Mzwandile Buthelezi was chosen after members of the public voted it the best of 3 possible new options.

In 2014 British importers of South African Niknaks were issued with legal letters informing them not to import the snacks into the country as they infringed on the brand name of the British brand Nik Naks manufactured by KP Snacks.

Niknaks currently come in three flavours.
