McKee Foods Corporation

McKee Foods Corporation is a privately held and family owned American snack food and granola manufacturer headquartered in Collegedale, Tennessee. The corporation is the maker of the Little Debbie Snacks, Sunbelt Bakery granola and cereal, Heartland Brands, and Drake's Cakes. McKee Foods has its own fleet of trucks to distribute its products.

The company was founded during the Great Depression by O.D. and Ruth McKee. O.D. started out selling cakes from his 1928 Whippet in the Chattanooga area. Wanting to expand, he bought a small bakery, Jack's Cookie Company. The bakery did well for a few years, but O.D. was still looking to expand. His father-in-law, however, did not share his ideas. O.D. decided to sell his business and start over.

The McKees moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, into a new bakery designed by O.D. After some time, they sold the Charlotte plant. They moved back to Chattanooga in the early 1950s when Cecil King, Ruth's brother, was in poor health and needed the help. They decided to buy back the bakery, and run it themselves.

McKee Baking Company moved to Collegedale in 1957. In 1991, McKee Baking Company became McKee Foods Corporation.

The son of McKee Foods' founder O.D. McKee, Ellsworth McKee, took over, but retired from day-to-day operations in September 2012 and retains the position of company chairman.

It was announced January 28, 2013, that McKee Foods would pay $27.5 million for Hostess Brands' Drake's brand, which includes Ring Dings, Yodels, and Devil Dogs products. The bankruptcy court approved the purchase on April 9, 2013.

As of 2013, McKee ships more than 900 million cartons of Little Debbie products each year.

Little Debbie products are primarily cookie and cake-based dessert snacks. They come in dozens of varieties, including the top-selling Swiss Cake Rolls, Nutty Bars, Cosmic Brownies, and Oatmeal Creme Pies. Little Debbie products are available in most discount, grocery, and convenience stores, both in boxes and individual wrappings.

Zingers

Zingers is an American snack cake produced and sold by Dolly Madison and Hostess, snack food brands owned by Hostess Brands and currently owned by private equity firms Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co.

Zingers are similar to Twinkies and come in devil's food, vanilla, and raspberry flavors.

Chocolate and vanilla Zingers have a thick layer of icing on top with cream (synthetic, not dairy) filling in the middle. Raspberry Zingers do not have icing on top but are instead covered in a mixture of shaved coconut and raspberry flavored syrup.

A series of commercials for Zingers used the Peanuts characters, with Snoopy playing the part of the mysterious "Zinger Zapper", the thrust of the ads featuring the other characters attempting to discover his true identity by tempting him with Zingers. Famously, at least one of these commercials included the only time the Dolly Madison logo came to life (when she admonished the "Zinger Zapper" for trying to steal a Zinger in the last scene).

Zingers later introduced the Ecto-Cooler flavor in conjunction with the release of the The Real Ghostbusters cartoon series. It featured a vanilla filling topped with a thick orange flavor icing. The entire cake was colored green to match the character Slimer from the series

Hostess released a limited edition One Piece Zingers flavor in Japan around 2000, when the anime series was starting to become popular. The snack cake had a purple filling to represent the Devil Fruit from the series. The wrappers included images of the characters Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, and Sanji. They were in production until 2002.
