Ethel M Chocolate Factory

The Ethel M Chocolate Factory is located in Henderson, Nevada and continues to produce gourmet premium chocolate for all of the Ethel M and Ethel's brand chocolates. The company distributes their products mainly via phone and internet on their website (www.ethelm.com), although they also operate several retail outlets located in and around Las Vegas, Nevada. Also located at this plant are the Ethel M Botanical Cactus Gardens (which feature over 300 species of desert plants), and a small branch of M&M's World. A part of the factory is open to the public and visitors can take self-guided tours.

Customers who visit the Ethel M Chocolates factory and cactus garden are welcome to take a free self-guided tour of the botanical cactus garden and gourmet chocolate factory to learn about premium chocolate making and the traditions of Mars Inc. chocolate making. The botanical cactus garden is also host to several community events throughout the year, including the Cactus Lighting Event hosted every November.

Ethel M is owned by Mars, Incorporated and was named after the mother of Forrest Mars, Sr. The company is perhaps most known for its fine liqueur-filled chocolates.

Forrest E. Mars, Sr. created Ethel M Chocolates in 1978, which opened in 1980, as a project to cure the boredom he experienced after retiring. According to researcher J.G. Brenner, "Forrest established the venture in Nevada because it is one of the few states that allowed the sale of liqueur-filled cordials." He started Ethel M with two of his past associates, Alan Thomas, as General Manager, and Dean Musser, as CFO. Mars commissioned engineer Stephen H. Edelblute to design and build the factory, former candy factory owner Fred Dent to assist in developing his chocolates and Karen Grover, a recent research assistant. Within a few years of its opening "the company had reached annual sales of $150 million, from seventy Ethel M stores throughout the West."

In 2007 introduced a new line of 48 different handmade-gourmet chocolates designed by master chocolatier Jin Caldwell.

In late 2007 the company responded to public demand for the classic line of chocolates by re-releasing six varieties of chocolates in their retail stores in the Las Vegas area.

Other than at the factory (located at 2 Cactus Garden Drive), Ethel's stores can be found in Nevada at the California Hotel, and Gates A-E of McCarran International Airport.

Flavia Beverage Systems

FLAVIA is a hot beverage system that prepares single servings of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate drinks. The brand is owned by Mars Drinks, a division of Mars, Incorporated, and competes with Keurig's K-Cup system. FLAVIA launched its first brewer in 1984.

FLAVIA claims its patented technology brews drinks in a single serve "Fresh Pack" which means that the pack is the actual brewing chamber. Then the drink pours directly from the packet into the cup rather than through a common channel so that each drink is not tainted by the previously brewed drink. Used packs are collected in a tray that is then emptied periodically when prompted.

The Fresh Packs are foil-sealed, thus protecting the ground coffees and teas from oxygen and moisture. FLAVIA markets several different machines, such as large coin-operated machines and small portable machines designed for home use.

In February 2006, the Flavia Fusion drinks station earned the Good Housekeeping Seal.

Iams

imageIams

Iams (/ˈaɪənz/) is a popular brand name for dog food and cat food manufactured by Spectrum Brands in Europe and Mars, Inc worldwide. The company sells pet food for cats and dogs formulated for puppy/kitten, adult and mature. Its products are developed by nutritionists and veterinarians and can be found in three main formulas: ProActive Health, Healthy Naturals and Premium Protection. Veterinary formulas for pets with special dietary requirements are also available.

During the 1940s, because pet food was not available in stores, animals were predominantly fed homemade food, usually table scraps.Paul Iams, an animal nutritionist who graduated from Ohio State University in 1938, founded The Iams Company in 1946 in a small feed mill near Dayton. In 1950, he developed the world’s first animal-based protein, dry dog food and called it Iams 999. In 1969, Paul Iams formulated a new dog food and named it Eukanuba. Prior to founding Iams and Eukanuba, he worked for a number of companies including his father’s feed business in Dayton, Ohio.

In 1973 during the Arab oil embargo, the costs for meat and bone meal tripled, but sale prices were frozen by a nationwide wage and price control issued by then-President Richard Nixon. Iams did not change the product formula during the price freeze mandate and the company nearly went broke.Clay Mathile, who joined Iams in 1970, purchased half of the company in 1975. By 1982, he became the sole owner and president. After expanding the company from $100,000 turnover in 1970 to $900 million in 1999, Mathile sold it to P&G in September 1999. In July 2006, P&G reorganized the Pet Health & Nutrition division into P&G Pet Care (consisting of the Iams and Eukanuba brands).

In its largest divestiture in five years, Procter & Gamble announced in April 2014 that it would sell its Iams, Eukanuba and Natura pet food brands in all markets except Europe to Mars, Incorporated for $2.9 billion in cash. P&G said the deal would allow it to lose a slow performer and generate cash to grow core businesses. The deal for P&G Pet Care's operations in North America and Latin America was completed in August, 2014. Mars, Inc also exercised options to acquire P&G’s pet food business in some parts of Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, including Australia, Japan and Singapore. P&G sold its European pet care business to Spectrum Brands in December 2014.

Milky Way (chocolate bar)

imageMilky Way

US Milky WayUK Milky Way

The Milky Way bar is a chocolate-covered candy bar manufactured and distributed by the Mars confectionery company. The American version of the Milky Way bar is made of chocolate-malt nougat topped with caramel and covered with milk chocolate and sold as the Mars bar everywhere else. The global Milky Way is a different chocolate candy bar similar to the American 3 Musketeers (chocolate bar).

The Milky Way bar was created in 1923 by Frank C. Mars and originally manufactured in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The name and taste were taken from a famed malted milk drink (milkshake) of the day, which was in turn named after the Earth’s galaxy.

On March 10, 1925, the Milky Way trademark was registered in the U.S., claiming a first-use date of 1922. In 1924, the Milky Way bar was introduced nationally and sold $800,000 that year. The chocolate for the chocolate coating was supplied by Hershey's.

By 1926 it came out in two flavors, chocolate nougat with milk chocolate coating, and vanilla nougat with a dark chocolate coating, each for a nickel. In June 1932, the Milky Way bar was sold as a two piece bar, but just four years later, in 1936, the chocolate and vanilla were separated. The vanilla version, with a dark chocolate coating, was called "Forever Yours" and it was produced until 1979. In 1989, Forever Yours was reintroduced and renamed "Milky Way Dark," and later "Milky Way Midnight".

Nutro Products

Nutro Products, Inc., a subsidiary company of Mars Incorporated, is the developer and manufacturer of the MAX, NATURAL CHOICE and ULTRA brands of dog and cat food, as well as GREENIES treats. The company is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee, USA.

John Saleen purchased a dog food company from a British businessman in 1926 and changed the company name to Nutro Products. Moving to Industry, California, it was a family-run business with products only available locally until the company was purchased in 1976 and expanded its market. Nutro Products are now available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe.

In 1985, with the help of Dr. Sharon Machlik, they developed and introduced their MAX line of foods which made use of a chicken, lamb and rice formulation. Instead of traditional advertising, the company chose to produce large amounts of literature on the dietary needs of dogs and cats, with comparative information on their ingredients versus the ingredients of other brands, and provide this to their retailers, as a marketing tool.

The company was acquired by Mars, Incorporated in 2007, and the headquarters was moved to Tennessee.

Nutro develops several different diet formulations, including canned, soft foods as well as bagged, dry kibbles. They have MAX CAT and Natural Choice lines for cats, and the Nutro Max, Natural Choice, and Ultra lines for dogs. Each line has a selection of flavors and formulations for age range. The Ultra line was specifically created with the intent of creating a high-end holistic dog food.

Nutro dry foods are made through an extrusion process, and packaged with as a natural preservative.

Oxo (food)

imageOxo

Oxo is a brand of food products, including stock cubes, herbs and spices, dried gravy, and yeast extract. The original product was the beef stock cube, but Oxo now also markets chicken and other flavour cubes, e.g. Chinese Recipe and Indian Recipe. The cubes are broken up and used as flavouring in meals or gravy or dissolved into boiling water.

In the United Kingdom, the Oxo brand belongs to Premier Foods. In South Africa, the Oxo brand is owned and manufactured by Mars, Incorporated and in Canada is owned and manufactured by Knorr.

Oxo beef stock cubes contain: "Wheat Flour (with added Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Salt, Maize Starch, Yeast Extract, Flavour Enhancers (Monosodium Glutamate, Disodium Guanylate), Colour (Ammonia Caramel), Beef Fat (4.5%), Autolysed Yeast Extract, Dried Beef Bonestock, Flavourings, Sugar, Acidity Regulator (Lactic Acid), Onion Powder."

Oxo ham stock cubes contain: "Salt, Potato Starch, Dried Glucose Syrup, Flavourings (contain Barley, Wheat), Wheat Flour (with added Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Thiamin), Ham Bouillon Powder (4.5%) (Pork Bonestock, Yeast Extract, Salt, Whey Powder (Milk), Dried Onion, Sunflower Oil, Onion Extract, Parsley Extract, Celery Extract), Pork Fat (4.5%), Sugar, Ham Powder (2%) (Pork, Salt, Dextrose, Smoke Flavouring, Acidity Regulator (Sodium Ascorbate), Preservative (Sodium Nitrate)), Onion Powder, Dried Parsley, Smoke Flavouring."

The "Oxo Chicken stock cube" contains 2% chicken extract with the bulk of the flavour coming from MSG and yeast extract.

Concentrated meat extract was invented by Justus von Liebig around 1840 and commercialized by Liebig's Extract of Meat Company (Lemco) starting in 1866. The original product was a viscous liquid containing only meat extract and 4% salt. In 1899, the company introduced the trademark Oxo for a cheaper version; the origin of the name is unknown, but presumably comes from the word 'ox'. Since the cost of liquid Oxo remained beyond the reach of many families, the company launched a research project to develop a solid version that could be sold in cubes for a penny. After much research, the first Oxo cubes were produced in 1910 and further increased Oxo's popularity. During World War I 100 million OXO cubes were provided to the armed services, all of them individually hand-wrapped.

Pedigree Petfoods

imagePedigree Petfoods

Pedigree Petfoods is a subsidiary of the American group Mars, Incorporated specializing in pet food, with factories in England at Melton Mowbray and Birstall, Leeds; and offices at McLean, Virginia.

In 1934, Mars Limited, a division of the large American confectionery company, that had been based in Slough since 1932, acquired Chappel Brothers in Manchester. This company took low-quality meat and canned it as dog food, branded as "Chappie".

In 1951, annual sales reached £1m, and the company moved to Melton Mowbray, using a former sewing-thread mill previously used by Patons and Baldwins. In 1953, the company operated seven days a week, twenty four hours a day on a shift system. A continuous sterilisation process was introduced instead of batch processing. New dog food brands Pal and Lassie were introduced during the 1950s. Due to making more than the Chappie product, the company name changed to Petfoods Ltd in 1956. In 1972, this became Pedigree Petfoods Ltd. A new factory on Shrewsbury Avenue in Woodston, Peterborough opened in October 1974 which originally produced semi-moist products such as Bounce. In March 1975 it became the Pedigree Petfoods division of Mars Ltd. During the 1970s, around 2,500 workers were at Melton and 200 at Peterborough and produced around 400,000 tonnes of animal food a year and virtually doubled production. The raw materials came from the Oakleigh Manufacturing company in Ascot. Around 3 million cans were used per day at the Melton plant; cans were delivered every 30 minutes, to limit storage space, from the Metal Box company (which became Novar plc). At this time, Whiskas was the company's biggest product by sales closely followed by Pedigree Chum, although more in volume was sold of Pedigree Chum. Whiskas sold four times as much as Kitekat, although only half as much was spent on advertising Kitekat as Whiskas.

Towards the late 1980s and in the 1990s, the company came under much more competition from what became Nestlé Purina PetCare. A new £22m pouch production line opened in November 2007. The company is a member of the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association.

Pedigree is now a subsidiary of Mars, Incorporated. The English division of Mars Inc. has been called Masterfoods since January 2002, until it was split into 4 separate entities in 2007 : Mars Petcare UK, Mars Complementary Petcare UK, Mars Chocolate UK and Mars Food UK.
