Broo Brewing Company (Broo Limited) is a brewing company founded by partners Kent Grogan and Kelly Davidson in Sorrento, Victoria, Australia, in September 2009.

The brewery was founded by Kent Grogan and his partner Kelly Davidson, with the first beer, Broo Premium Lager, produced in September 2009.

The company was started on the basis that Broo would remain 100% Australian owned. Grogan stated at the time that the company's charter dictates that the company can never transfer shares to any company or individual that resides in a foreign jurisdiction.

In 2011, a publicity program associated with the lager involved giving away shares in Grogan's brewery. Grogan estimates that over 7,000 people now hold shares in the company. In August 2012 the refused to list the company because it deemed its policy to restrict foreign ownership "inappropriate". In June 2013 the company launched its second beer, Australia Draught, with the company pledging to donate 20% of its profits from the sale of the beer to two charities - the SAS Resources Fund and Commando Welfare Trust.

In 2011 Broo Ltd. received the Telstra Business Awards 'People’s Choice Award' for Victorian small to medium-sized businesses. In 2012 advertising for Broo Beer, created by Melbourne agency, Nick and Phil, won the single and overall categories for round five of the 2012 Siren Awards.

Broo beer sponsored Scott Saunders Racing NASCAR team and Melbourne City Wrestling events.

Peter Grant Hay

Peter Grant Hay (9 July 1879 – 29 August 1961) was an Australian brewer, landowner, pastoralist and thoroughbred racehorse breeder. He founded the Richmond N.S. Brewing Co. Ltd (Carlton & United Breweries) in Melbourne Australia.

He is responsible for both the introduction of pasteurisation to Australia's dairy industry and the introduction of the Swiss Nathan System of brewing to Australia. He was the youngest of five children.

Grant Hay was born in Bright, Victoria, the son of James Grant Hay, partner of Melbourne shipping firm, Coulson Hay & Co. and Catherine Margaret (née Cox), daughter of Irish distillery founder, Charles Cox. The Grant Hay's owned hop farm estates in Bright, Victoria and the Derwent Valley in Tasmania and were the main supplier of hops to Carlton & United Breweries in Victoria.

Upon the death of his father in 1914, Grant Hay traveled to America by steamship to San Francisco on board the USS American, meeting Tooheys Brewery manager Arnold Resch. The two agreed to inspect the major American breweries of Milwaukee, including the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company, Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, and the Miller Brewing Company and Anheuser-Busch brewing company in St Louis. Grant Hay then sailed to London to inspect the Courage Brewery plant and its hotels.

He then flew to Zurich and met with Dr Leopold Nathan, a Swiss chemist, who had invented a new brewing system. Grant Hay drove to Munich and attended Oktoberfest in the company of the Reinheitsgebot before the outbreak of war and returned to Australia.

The brewery operations began in 1999 and were moved to the Keatings Hotel in 2005, where the Brewhouse also operates a restaurant and hotel. Little Creatures is an Australian brewing company based in Fremantle, Western Australia, originally established in 2000 by the original brewers of the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. The name "Little Creatures" is inspired by a song lyric from the Talking Heads Little Creatures album and refers to the live yeast cells that turn the sugars in malt wort into ethanol.

Little Creatures Pty Ltd is owned by Little World Beverages, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lion Nathan (which is itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Kirin).

Little Creatures Brewery was founded by Howard Cearns (marketing specialist), Nic Trimboli (restaurateur) and Phil Sexton (master brewer), all of whom previously worked with the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. In 1997 Cearns, Trimboli and Sexton discussed the possibility of brewing an American style India Pale Ale. Sexton having worked in the United States and was involved in the development of the BridgePort IPA. Cearns came up with the name after reading about little creatures wandering from ale house to ale house in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and at the time thinking that it sounded like yeast fermentation. The brewery released its first beer, Little Creatures Pale Ale, in 2000. The Company sponsors the Fremantle Print Award. In 2008 the company established a second brewery in Healesville, Victoria. In 2012 the company was bought by Lion In 2013 another brewery was opened in Geelong, Victoria, at a cost of $60 million. Brewing capacity is reported as "10 million litres a year, or 80 kegs an hour."

The Matilda Bay Brewing Company is an Australian brewery. It was the first new brewery opened in Australia since World War II and Australia's first craft brewery. Originating from small batches brewed for the Sail and Anchor Hotel in 1984, their main brewery opened in 1989 in a prominent building on the Stirling Highway occupied by Ford Motor Company. The company was purchased by Carlton & United Breweries in the early 1990s (now part of SABMiller).

In 1983 Phil Sexton (a former brewer for the Swan Brewery), together with Garry Gosatti, John Tollis and Ron Groves, formed Brewtech Pty Ltd to brew commercial boutique beers. Due to lack of support from Perth Hotels the company purchased and renovated the Freemasons Hotel on the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street, Fremantle. The hotel was renovated, a micro brewery installed and renamed the Sail and Anchor, under the banner of Anchor Brewing Company. The first beer, Anchor Ale, "a dark, copper-coloured, traditional ale", was produced in late 1984.

In 1985 Brewtech opened their second venue, The Brewery Alehouse on Stirling Highway in Nedlands. The Company also established a second micro brewery at 31 Carrington Street in Nedlands, which housed the Matilda Bay Brewing Company and began producing beers in 1985. In 1986 the company launched its first wheat beer, Redback, which went on to be one of the company's best commercial successes. In 1987 Brewtech Pty Ltd changed their name to Brewtech Limited, following which they made the decision to consolidate their business under the Matilda Bay Brewing Company banner. The Company purchased another three outlets in Perth (including the Queens Hotel in Beaufort Street and the Brass Monkey in Northbridge).

Mountain Goat Beer is a brewery in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. The brewery was founded in 1997 by Cam Hines and Dave Bonighton. The company's first commercial brew, 'Hightale Ale' amber ale, was released in October 1997.

The origins of Mountain Goat Beer date to the early 1990s, when co-founder Bonighton was homebrewing in his backyard in Elsternwick, Victoria, Australia. His friend and co-founder Hines was travelling in North America after quitting his music industry job and he was struck by the range of micro-brewed beer available at the bars in Vancouver, Canada.

The pair then decided to start a brewing company and attempted to secure a bank loan with collateral that included Bonighton's EH Holden, three surfboards and a couple of mountain bikes. After they were unable to borrow a sufficient amount of funding from a bank, friends and family assisted Bonighton and Hines to launch Mountain Goat. Bonighton explained in a September 2012 interview:

We're a small brewery run by two former homebrewers who, for 15 years, have been making the kinds of beers that we like to drink. Most breweries brew to a formula, something born in a focus group or in a marketing team meeting. We come up with our ideas at the bar.

Bonighton and Hines decided on the name 'Mountain Goat' as a reference to the task ahead of them and bringing new styles of beer to the Australian market compared to their competitors at the time, as a mountain goat is 'a big hairy animal that's never going to fall over'.

By September 1996, Mountain Goat beer was ready to taste-test three beers—The Leroy Brown Ale, Sheik-It-Out Stout and Golden Boy—at a gallery space in Melbourne. The success of this venture indicated to Hines and Bonighton that their original idea might be viable.

Lacking the money to invest in their own brewery, the first Mountain Goat beers were brewed using excess capacity first at the Scottish Chiefs brew-pub in Geelong and then at the larger Grand Ridge microbrewery in Mirboo North, Victoria and in October 1997, Hightale Ale was commercially released.

By 1999, the brewery was able to raise funds to move to their original premises in Crown St, Richmond, effectively relocating the equipment from the defunct brewing operations at the Geebung Polo Club in Hawthorn, Victoria.

Thunder Road Brewing Company is an independent brewery operating in the Melbourne inner suburb of Brunswick, Australia. Since opening its doors for business in 2011, the brewery’s beers have been distributed for sale in Melbourne and distribution is now expanding throughout Australia. Thunder Road Brewing Company brews year-round flagship beers including Full Steam Pale Lager, Collingwood Draught, Hop Star, Brunswick Bitter, as well as limited release seasonal beers, for on-tap sales. In 2015, the company also introduced its first line of packaged beer, the Double Fermentation Series, and began a range of barrel aged beers known as the "President's Reserve" series.

The company is an active supporter of local sporting clubs, cultural events and local and national philanthropic organisations. It is a sponsor of the local Brunswick Women's Australian Rules Football club, the Brunswick Renegades. The company also sponsors a local fist-ball team - the Fistroy Lions.

In June 2014, Thunder Road held a major philanthropic event to raise money for the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF) and donated over $10,000 to the charity. The event attempted a "world record" by having the most people to ever brew a single batch of beer and drew over 800 "volunteer" brewers in a single day of brewing. The beer was subsequently bottled and labeled "Be Strong Ale" based on volunteers voting for the beer's name and given to volunteer brewers.

The company is also a multiyear sponsor of the Brunswick Music Festival, a multi-week musical festival that highlights established and up and coming musical acts both from Australian and from overseas, and the annual associated Sydney Road Street Party, which routinely draws tens of thousands of attendees. Both events are supported by the local Moreland Council, which encompasses the suburb of Brunswick.

In 2012 Thunder Road Brewing Company undertook legal action to unlock the trademarks to 59 heritage beer brands (including Ballarat Bitter, Richmond Lager, Kent, NQ Lager and Bulimba Gold Top) that had been acquired by CUB but were no longer in use as Thunder Road Brewing planned to release its own beers under the same names.

In September 2013 the Australian Trade Marks Office denied the request. However, the Trade Mark Office agreed with the company's central argument regarding “non-use.” In total, with 53 of the 54 trade marks at issue – grounds for “non-use” applications were established. Furthermore, ten additional CUB trade marks were ordered removed from the trademark register. The remaining marks stayed on the register through the exercise of the Registrar's discretion.
