Cicis

imageCicis

Cicis (formerly named CiCi's Pizza) is an American buffet restaurant chain based in Coppell, Texas, specializing in pizza. There are approximately 500 franchised and corporately owned restaurants in 35 states. In November 2015, the company began a new marketing campaign which included the renaming of the company to Cicis, along with the addition of a new logo and redesigned website. The campaign is aimed at proving that Cicis has more to offer than just pizza.

Joe Croce and Mike Cole founded Cicis in 1985 in Plano, Texas. In 2001, with 363 restaurants at the time, the chain expanded its buffet offerings and began remodeling restaurants. Four years later, Cicis had more than 500 locations, and was the fastest-growing pizza chain in the United States. In 2003 Croce retired from the business, and passed ownership of the company to the company's executive team. Craig Moore, who was a general manager in Dallas, became vice president of the company, a position he held for five years before he was named president after the sale. Croce gave 20% of his proceeds to Gateway Church, where he was a member. As president of the chain, Moore oversaw the company's operations and franchise growth, eventually announcing his retirement in 2009, after 17 years with the company. Michael Shumsky took over after Moore retired in late 2009 through July 2013.

Michael Shumsky took over after Moore retired in late 2009 (He had previously served as CEO of La Madeleine Restaurant, Inc.). Darin Harris is the current CEO of Cicis Pizza after joining the company in August 2013.

In addition to its current restaurants, in 2010 Cicis announced plans to add another 500 restaurants in the next 10 years (with the possibility of expanding internationally into Canada and Mexico). Cicis has won numerous awards and has also been named one of the top 25 performing brands by The Wall Street Journal and a top 200 franchise concept by Franchise Today. The award for worst restaurant ideas has also been awarded to the pizza chain.

In November 2015, the company began a new marketing campaign which included the simplified renaming of the company to just Cicis with the modifier "Beyond Pizza," along with the addition of a new logo and redesigned website. The campaign is aimed at proving that Cicis has more to offer than just pizza.

Cottage Inn Pizza

imageCottage Inn Pizza

Cottage Inn Pizza is an American regional franchise pizza delivery corporation headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The first Cottage Inn restaurant opened in Ann Arbor in 1948 and remains the company's flagship today. There are currently over 50 franchised stores in Michigan and Ohio.

The first Cottage Inn restaurant, opened in 1948, still stands in its original location at 512 East William, Ann Arbor. Although it started as a coffee shop, pizza was introduced in 1959. It has the distinction of being the first restaurant in Ann Arbor to serve pizza. The current owner acquired the building in 1961.

The restaurant went through renovations in 1975, 1980, and 1987. In 1993, the restaurant expanded again to include a second floor and banquet room facilities. Due to its proximity to the University of Michigan campus, the Original Cottage Inn is often frequented by students and visitors. The restaurant also has an established relationship with the Ann Arbor community, participating in community service events such as feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving.

In early 2014, Cottage Inn announced a plan to expand nationally using a franchising business model. The company is accepting applications from potential franchisees through their franchising website.

By 1978, Cottage Inn's continued growth required the formation of a second company to devote to delivery services. As a result, Cottage Inn Carryout & Delivery, Inc. was established. The first Cottage Inn store under this new company was founded at Packard and Hill streets in Ann Arbor. In June 1986, the first franchise opened in Ypsilanti. In 2003, the new corporate headquarters and distribution center opened in Ann Arbor.

Cottage Inn offers a variety of pizza, perhaps most well known for their specialty gourmet pizzas, along with various crust styles and toppings. Additional menu items include Italian-American entrees, salads, sandwiches, breadsticks, beverages, and desserts.

In 2009, Cottage Inn expanded its menu to include gluten free pizzas and cheese bread due to a growing demand for pizza from customers who suffer from celiac disease. The Brighton location was the first to introduce gluten free pizza, which has since spread to the rest of the Cottage Inn locations. In May 2013, Cottage Inn launched gluten free sandwiches.

Donatos Pizza

imageDonatos Pizzeria, LLC

Donatos Pizza is a pizza delivery restaurant chain headquartered in Gahanna, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. It has nearly 200 locations in eight states, with the majority of locations in Ohio. Donatos is also served at several venue outlets including Ohio Stadium and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

In 1963, Ohio State sophomore Jim Grote purchased the original Donatos located on the south side of Columbus, Ohio for $1,300. Grote's business principles included: creating a superior product, hiring great people, and to "treat others the way I would like to be treated". These principles led to the creation of the official brand promise To serve the best pizza and make your day a little better.”

In 1999, Donatos was purchased by McDonald's in an attempt to enter the pizza industry. A majority interest in Donatos was repurchased by Jim Grote and daughter Jane Abell in 2003 as McDonald's sought to refocus on its core business. During this period Donatos also had operations in Munich, Germany.

Today, Donatos operates in eight states: Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Donatos is known for its thin crust pizza "loaded edge to edge" with toppings, particularly its large pepperoni pizza that includes 100+ pepperoni slices. In 2009, Donatos launched a hand-tossed pie-cut crust option. In addition to pizza, Donatos serves subs, salads, and wings.

In 2004, the company introduced Donatos take and bake pizza in Kroger supermarkets. The take and bake concept offers a limited menu of their Signature Pizzas, including two certified gluten-free options. They are sold in several varieties including pepperoni, pepperoni & sausage, and cheese.

In 2013, Donatos was the subject of an episode of the CBS reality television show Undercover Boss. During the episode (Season 5, episode 3, air date October 11, 2013), Jane Grote Abell, the Chairperson of Donatos and daughter of its founder Jim Grote, went undercover posing as a contestant on a reality TV show who is trying to win money to open her own restaurant. During her first assignment at the Donatos store located at Ohio State University (where she had actually attended college during the 1980s), Abell's cover was blown in her first few minutes by the manager of the store who immediately recognized her despite wearing glasses and a brunette wig over her normally blonde hair, though she was able to convince the manager to keep her identity a secret for the purposes of the show.
