Taco Bell

imageTaco Bell

Taco Bell is an American chain of fast-food restaurants based in Irvine, California. A subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc., they serve a variety of Tex-Mex foods, including tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, other specialty items, and a variety of "value menu" items. Taco Bell serves more than 2 billion customers each year in 7,000 restaurants, more than 80 percent of which are owned and operated by independent franchisees and licensees.

Taco Bell was founded by Glen Bell, who first opened a hot dog stand called Bell's Drive-In in San Bernardino, California in 1946 when he was 23 years old. In 1950, he opened Bell's Hamburgers and Hot Dogs in San Bernardino's West Side barrio. According to Gustavo Arellano, author of Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America, Bell watched long lines of customers at a Mexican restaurant called the Mitla Cafe, located across the street, which attracted a dedicated customer base for its hard-shelled tacos. Bell began eating there regularly, attempting to reverse-engineer the recipe, and eventually won the confidence of the proprietors such that they allowed him to see how the tacos and other foods were prepared. In late 1951 or early 1952, he took what he had learned and opened a new stand, this time selling tacos under the name of Taco-Tia.

Over the next few years, Bell owned and operated a number of restaurants in southern California including four called El Taco. Bell sold the El Tacos to his partner and built the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. On the night of Nov. 19, 2015, the original Taco Bell building in Downey was moved to the Taco Bell Corporate Headquarters in Irvine, CA. In 1962, he sold Taco-Tia. Kermit Becky, a former Los Angeles police officer, bought the first Taco Bell franchise from Glen Bell in 1964, and located it in Torrance. The company grew rapidly, and by 1967, the 100th restaurant opened at 400 South Brookhurst in Anaheim. In 1968, its first franchise location east of the Mississippi River opened in Springfield, Ohio. In 1970, Taco Bell went public with 325 restaurants. In 1978, PepsiCo purchased Taco Bell from Glen Bell.

Taco Cabana

imageTaco Cabana

Taco Cabana is an American fast casual restaurant chain specializing in Mexican cuisine. A wholly owned subsidiary of Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc, it is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. As of September 2014 Taco Cabana had 166 locations throughout Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Most Taco Cabana restaurants have a drive-thru and many are open 24 hours a day. For most of the chain's history all locations were painted in the company's signature pink. Taco Cabana is known for its interior, semi-enclosed and patio dining areas. Most menu items are handmade daily on site in open display cooking areas including fajitas on an open-flame grill and tortillas made in-house.

Taco Cabana was founded by Felix Stehling in September 1978 with its first restaurant at the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand Avenue in Midtown San Antonio. Stehling purchased a vacant Dairy Queen because the family needed additional parking space for their popular bar across the street, the Crystal Pistol. Stehling decided to open a taco stand. The open-air design of the existing structure led to the "patio cafe" concept that defined the chain's subsequent locations. Felix Stehling's wife, Billie Jo Stehling, created the décor and interior theme for the restaurant chain. After finding all of the patio furniture stolen following the first night of business, Stehling decided to keep the place open 24 hours and the around-the-clock service concept began.

The restaurant focused on fresh foods, rather than pre-packaged or pre-prepared foods. The restaurant served beer and margaritas inside while offering the convenience of a drive-thru for takeout orders. With a rapidly growing concept, Stehling needed help running his new chain. Stehling decided to keep the business in the family and asked his two brothers to help expand the chain throughout San Antonio. The brothers expanded the chain in the early stages of their partnership. In 1986 the brothers left the company in Felix's hands after differences in vision for the restaurant concept's future.

Taco del Mar

imageTaco del Mar

Taco del Mar is a Seattle, Washington-based Fresh Mex fast casual restaurant chain that specializes in Mission burritos. Since opening in Seattle on June 8, 1992 by brothers James and John Schmidt, it has expanded into over 260 locations in the U.S. and Canada. It is known for its relaxed, seaside-themed decor.

The name "Taco del Mar," meaning "taco of the sea" in Spanish, refers to the chain's original specialty – fish tacos. Like the larger Subway chain, the customer directs the preparation of his or her meal, requesting ingredients as it moves along an assembly line. A standard selection of "Mission Style" (referring to San Francisco's Mission District) Mexican ingredients is available, including wheat, flour, tomato, or spinach tortillas, and fish, beef, pork, or chicken.

In 2007, Taco del Mar announced that more than 30 franchisees closed their restaurants. Taco del Mar executives cited poor sales and bad locations as the cause of the closures. Previously Taco del Mar closed restaurants throughout the Dallas and Boston markets due to poor financial performance.

However, a group of franchisees and Master Developers called The Truth About Taco del Mar charged that several Taco del Mar executives took secret kickbacks from various suppliers that raised restaurant operating costs, hurting franchisee profitability and contributing to the store closures. There is no evidence of alleged kickbacks; furthermore, Taco del Mar founder James Schmidt said if there ever were kickbacks proven, the money would be returned to the Franchisee.

There has not been one credible example of kickbacks ever brought to the attention of an attorney, posted here or any one else, that has come to my attention. If we were getting kickbacks and it was proven then franchisees would get money back, we disclose we do not get kickback so if we took them, then prove it and money will be returned - James Schmidt

The group also claims that Taco del Mar intentionally removed former franchises from its uniform offering circular (UFOC) to mislead potential investors into purchasing restaurants from the franchise. In December 2007, reporter Julie Bennett conducted an investigation and found many franchisees outside of Washington and Oregon were losing money at Taco del Mar.

Taco Mayo

Taco Mayo Restaurant is a Mexican-American fast food chain based in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

The chain originated in Norman, Oklahoma in May 1978. By 1980, Taco Mayo had expanded into franchising by establishing three stores in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area. Over the years, Taco Mayo has expanded from a single store in Norman into a regional operation with franchise locations throughout Oklahoma, northern Texas, southern Kansas, and western Arkansas. The restaurant wanted to expand to 200 locations by the year 2000. While it did not reach that goal, it had reached its hundredth location by 1997. After the “expansion program” failed, the company began realizing its marketing mistake: never force quantity over quality. Many of the restaurants were built and opened in such a rush that the company did not care about finding the right individuals to run the restaurant or finding the right locations to place the restaurants. Not wanting to be the fast-food chain that everyone stereotyped as poorly crafted or run-down, Taco Mayo’s corporate offices closed down many of the locations that were functioning poorly. To this day there are fifty-three Taco Mayo locations throughout Oklahoma and its surrounding areas. Taco Mayo is owned by Taco Mayo Franchise Systems, Inc., with corporate offices located in Oklahoma City. The majority of Taco Mayo locations are now franchised.

Also contributing to saving the franchise’s name was the idea to upgrade to a “Fresh Mex” style on the restaurants twenty-fifth anniversary. This upgrade included simplifying the menu and showing the customer the freshness of their food by using an open layout bar that displayed the ingredients in plain sight. Some people believe this portion of the upgrade was to distance itself from Taco Bell or other Tex-Mex fast-food chain restaurants; while moving away from these chains, Taco Mayo was only growing closer to being an off-brand, cheaper Chipotle Mexican Grill. This upgrade to “Fresh Mex,” the change from glorified Taco Bell to off-brand Chipotle, has worked well for Taco Mayo. This small franchise has come a long way in its thirty-nine years of service and will continue to provide “pleasant inside dining and fast, friendly and efficient drive-thru service” throughout the upcoming years.
