List of Mexican restaurants

This is a list of notable Mexican restaurants. Mexican cuisine is primarily a fusion of indigenous Mesoamerican cooking with European, especially Spanish, elements added after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in the 16th century. The basic staples remain native foods such as corn, beans and chili peppers, but the Europeans introduced a large number of other foods, the most important of which were meat from domesticated animals (beef, pork, chicken, goat and sheep), dairy products (especially cheese) and various herbs and lots of spices.

Barberitos

imageBarberitos

Barberitos is a franchise chain of Mission burrito-inspired restaurants based in Athens, Georgia, U.S.A. As of April 2014, 54 Barberitos restaurants are operating in the southeastern United States. The company name is a portmanteau of Downing Barber, company founder, and burrito, a signature item at Barberitos restaurants. (Barberitos is consistently spelled without a possessive apostrophe.)

The original Barberitos, still in operation, is located in downtown Athens, near the University of Georgia's North Campus. Recently Barberitos began selling franchise opportunities. There are now approximately twenty restaurants in operation in Georgia, and about nine more in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.

Barberitos serves Tex-Mex fare such as burritos, tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. They are perhaps best known for the Skinny, Fatty and Heavy D varieties of their burritos. They offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan entrees (including tofu burritos). They also feature a "Lil' Barbs" menu for children.

Barberitos differentiate themselves from their competitors by offering only fresh food. A few ways they ensure the ingredients are always fresh include no freezers on the premises, fresh produce delivered daily, making their own chips, and never using preservatives or pre-made ingredients.

Chronic Tacos

imageChronic Tacos

Chronic Tacos is a Fast Casual Mexican Grill serving generous portions of authentic food. Using third-generation recipes, Chronic Tacos' made-to-order menu is completely customizable; main items served include: tacos, burritos, and bowl-ritos.

The first Chronic Tacos opened in Newport Beach in 2002. The relaxed atmosphere and addicting menu drew in a following and the Taco Life was born. Inspired by authentic food and the individuality, the Taco Life movement continues to spread across the nation.

In 2012, majority stake in the company was purchased by Calivan; by 2014, the franchise began its national expansion. Chronic Tacos now has 37 open locations serving in two different countries, and seven different states.

Chronic Tacos was founded in 2001 by Randy Wyner and Dan Biello. Wyner, started a shop in Newport Beach, California, because he was "tired of biking so far to find a good taco." Neither of the two had experience in the restaurant industry, so Wyner enlisted the help of a Mexican-American friend who was able to provide him with an authentic family recipe. In April 2006, with the help of Dan's brother Mike Biello, Chronic Tacos Enterprises was formed. The first franchise opened in San Clemente, California. There are roughly 35 restaurants present in states such as, California, Arizona, North Carolina, Washington, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Alabama and Canada.

In 2010, on the wave of success in an economic downturn, a franchise store was opened by professional skater and Jackass star Jason Acuña. The shop, located in Redondo Beach, California, is named Wee Man's Chronic Tacos after Acuña's own nickname which was given to him because of his small stature.

Because of Acuna's partial ownership, he made a brief promotion of the chain in Jackass 3D.

Del Taco

imageDel Taco Holdings, Inc.

Del Taco is an American quick service restaurant chain which specializes in American-style Mexican cuisine as well as American foods such as burgers, fries, and shakes. Del Taco is led by Chairman and CEO Paul Murphy, and is headquartered in Lake Forest, California.

The first Del Taco restaurant opened in Yermo, California on September 16, 1964 by Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson. On the first official day of business, Del Taco made $169. Success of the first restaurant led to two in Barstow, one in Needles, and a fifth restaurant in Corona (the first Del Taco with a drive-thru window). Dick Naugle, who installed the kitchen equipment in the Corona store, was impressed by the design and joined Hackbarth and Jameson in the fledgling business. In 1966, the trio founded Red-E-Food Systems, Inc. with the idea of franchising the Del Taco brand. That same year, the original Del Taco sun logo was created and in 1967, Del Taco introduced their famous bean and cheese burrito with green or red sauce to their menu. Before long, the restaurants were being founded throughout Southern California.

Naugle left the company early in the decade to start his own Mexican fast food chain, Naugles. In 1973, the company dropped “Casa” from its name and Red-E-Food Systems became Del Taco, Inc. By that time, the company was enjoying a remarkable growth spurt; during one period, they were opening a new restaurant every month. However, in 1976, Hackbarth and Jameson sold Del Taco to a group of investors. The new owners sold the exclusive rights to use and develop the Del Taco name throughout the United States (excluding California; Eugene, Oregon; and Yuma, Arizona) to W. R. Grace and Company. Grace, primarily a chemicals company, founded a new company, Del Taco Restaurants Inc. of Dallas, Texas, and a new subsidiary, DTG Inc., to oversee the various fast food chains it was acquiring. Nonetheless, the franchise continued to expand. In 1977, there were 50 Del Taco restaurants. A year later in 1978, there were 100.

CKE later introduced the identical Red Burrito for its Hardee's chain, which primarily serves the Midwestern and Southern United States.
