Country Style

imageCountry Style Food Services Inc.

Country Style Food Services, Inc., formerly Country Style Donuts, is a fast/casual chain of coffee shops operating primarily in the Canadian province of Ontario (where it ranks second among coffee chains), which serves oatmeal, soup, sandwiches, salads, and coffee. The chain is based in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

In January 2006, there were 120 "traditional" locations in Ontario. There are over 420 "non-traditional" locations embedded in other stores such as gas stations, convenience stores, arenas and movie theatres. Over 70% of customer purchases in 2001 were coffee. In total, Country Style has over 1000 locations in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick under the Country Style/Bistro name.

Country Style has been in business since 1963 when it opened its first location in Toronto. Donut stores only accounted for about 17% of donut sales in Canada at that time so there was still a lot of room for growth (most were sold at supermarkets in bulk). Country Style experienced a lot of growth early on, opening 100 stores in the first 15–20 years of existence. It had 50 outlets in 1974 when it was the leading coffee and donut establishment in Canada above Tim Hortons (which passed it two years later). It began to expand into Western Canada in the 1970s (including Vancouver and Calgary) and the East in the early 1980s. Poor results caused the franchise to withdraw from these regions: locations in Alberta were the only ones to survive into the 1990s, while in the East, it was ones in Nova Scotia and PEI.

By 2001, Country Style had been forced to close a quarter of its stores due to decreasing market share in an increasingly competitive Canadian market. Since then, it has opened many new stores and now ranks third behind Tim Hortons and Starbucks in the Canadian coffee market. On November 1, 2011, its parent company, MTY Food Group, bought Mr. Sub for $23 million merging it with Country style to become Country Style Food Services Holdings Inc.

In the mid-1990s the Country Style logo was changed to use a font similar to Palatino instead of its former handwriting font.

In 2006, Country Style changed its image to a more upscale style: "Country Style Bistro Deli". The new image includes a new logo, a new website, and an enhanced branded deli menu that will be phased into all stores. The logo still uses the Palatino style font and will also be phased into all stores. New stores will feature more modern design features, somewhat similar to Starbucks, and provides wide range of wraps, smoothies, breakfast, salads and sweets. In 2009, the brand rights to Country Style, used at 900 locations, were purchased by MTY Food Group of Montreal for $14.6 million in cash and debt.

Donut Diner

Donut Diner was a Canadian coffee and doughnut franchise with locations and kiosks in and around the Niagara Region and greater Golden Horseshoe areas of Ontario. It was established in 1988 in St. Catharines, Ontario and grew to 30 outlets in the Niagara Peninsula. It was renowned for its old fashioned style of baked goods, its 1950s-era decor, and unique local flavour until the chain went bankrupt in 2005. All corporate owned locations closed that year, while franchised locations remained opened being allowed to continue to use the name Donut Diner without corporate support. Over the years many franchised locations have closed and very few locations remain. Avondale Food Stores Limited, a partner of The Donut Diner, still sells and promotes its coffee in some of their convenience stores.

At its peak, all Donut Diner locations were open 24 hours a day and was a major competitor to national donut giant Tim Hortons in Niagara and the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario.

The Donut Diner corporate offices were located in St. Catharines, Ontario. There were approximately 50 operational franchises and at least a dozen kiosks in the Golden Horseshoe.

The Donut Hole

The Donut Hole is a bakery and landmark in La Puente, California. An example of programmatic architecture, the building is shaped like two giant donuts through which customers drive to place their orders. The bakery is one of the most photographed donut shops in the United States.

The first Donut Hole opened in 1963, in La Puente, California. According to one source, the shop in La Puente was the second to open, in 1968, and was followed by three others. However, various sources disagree and date the building's original construction from 1947 to 1958 to 1962. What is certain is that the donut chain went out of business in 1979. The Covina branch was completely remodeled and the others were demolished, and only the La Puente location remains today as a working bakery.

It is a local tradition for newlyweds to drive through the donuts; some cite good luck as the reason, while others credit the sexual symbolism. The building has been struck by cars several times in its history, most recently in 2004 when an out-of-control car crashed through one of the donut facades.

The building was featured in the movie Moving Violations where Chief Fromm's car was bashed.

In the opening scenes of Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks' 1987 classic Dragnet the Donut Hole is shown.

Donut King

imageDonut King

Donut King is Australia's biggest doughnut franchise, based on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

The Donut King chain was founded in 1981 in Sydney, and is currently managed, under licence, by the Gold Coast-based Retail Food Group Limited. Retail Food Group also manages Michel's Patisserie, Brumby's Bakeries, and bb's Cafe, with a total of 1050 stores within Australia and New Zealand.

As of April 2012, there were over 350 Donut King stores in Australia in almost every major shopping centre. In July 2008, Donut King entered into a master licence agreement with Shanghai-based Mak Brands, marking the Australian brand's first foray into the China market. There are now 14 stores in China.

Besides doughnuts, Donut King also serves a variety of other food items and beverages such as coffee and teas, soft drinks, milkshakes, soft serve ice creams, frozen carbonated beverages, and hot dogs. Many of these are offered along with doughnuts as part of a promotion or 'deal'. They are famous for their hot cinnamon donuts which are 'cooked fresh to order' throughout the day.

On 5 December 2007, Donut King oversaw construction of the World's Largest Doughnut, in order to celebrate The Simpsons Movie's DVD release. It was created from over 90,000 doughnuts, using half a tonne of pink icing and 30 kg of sprinkles from Donut King. Taking 40 people over nine hours to build, the giant doughnut measured six metres and weighed 3.5 tonnes.

Donut Wheel

Donut Wheel is a doughnut shop, established 1958, and is a landmark in Livermore, California. The Donut Wheel is open 24 hours. The Donut Wheel is located at the intersection of First Street and L Street. It was the location that the City of Livermore divided the city into four quadrants, and was used by the Fire Department, Police Department and Public Works.

The building was built in 1941, as a Purity grocery store. It is an example of Googie architecture.

For generations The Donut Wheel has been a place where people have met after the town has closed down or as the nearby bars close.

The Donut Wheel pioneered the secret menu that was copied and made famous by establishments like In-N-Out and Jamba Juice. In the late 1980s between the hours of 3 am and 5 am customers could bring their own fillings to fill their donuts. This was short-lived after a new baker was hired to replace the indulgent one.

The only day The Donut Wheel has closed down was December 9, 1980, to mourn the murder of John Lennon.

Franklin Cider Mill

The Franklin Cider Mill, located in Bloomfield Township (just across the border of Franklin, Michigan), opened in 1837 as a gristmill owned by Col. Peter Van Every. The Mill was under construction for about 3 years before being completed. This mill was the first in Oakland County where farmers would sell their wheat for cash money.

In 1914, the mill was sold to James T. Flynn, who installed the first water-powered apple press. After several owners, the mill was again sold to Jack Peltz who operated the mill for almost 35 years until his death on July 27, 2004.

Today, the Franklin Cider Mill retains its immense popularity with locals and out-of-towners alike, and is still owned and managed by the Peltz family. Though actually located outside of Franklin's borders in Bloomfield Township, the mill is traditionally considered part of Franklin Village. Along with apple cider and hot donuts, the mill also sells a variety of apples, meats, cheeses, pies, candies, breads, and fruits. The mill operates during the fall from Labor Day to Thanksgiving weekend.

Go Nuts Donuts

imageGo Nuts Donuts

Go Nuts Donuts is a doughnut-shop chain based in the Philippines.

The Trillana-De Ocampo families of the Philippines engaged in a doughnut business to attempt to hold a franchise of the American-based Krispy Kreme. They, however, were denied. Thus, they decided put up their own doughnut company. After eighteen months of planning, Go Nuts Donuts was created.

On their first day of business, a total 700 doughnuts were sold. As of 2009, the chain sells an average of 20,000 doughnuts per day. At one time it sold as many as 27,000. Wanting to promote their doughnuts outside the country, they started delivering through DHL or FedEx.

Although sales were up permitting them to increase their prices, they retained their usual retailing prices. Company president Michael Trillana stated:

Trillana considers the business a gift from his son who died just a couple of days before their first store opened.

The doughnuts of Go Nuts Donuts have been made almost in a similar style as those from Krispy Kreme. They're referred to as less sweet, but larger and last a longer period. The chain has established a franchise store in Kuwait, giving the latter a run for its money. It also has plans to open more in Malaysia, China, and Australia.

In 2012, 40% of Go Nuts Donuts was bought by IP Ventures Retail Group. This has allowed the chain to start selling Highlands Coffee in their branches as IPVI Retail also own the local franchise for it.

Three types of donuts are served:

The chain even serves pizza (doughnut-shaped ones which make them unique from those of other establishments). Coffee, as well as non-coffee beverages, is also served hot or cold.

A trio of doughnuts on a tray. A premium donut (bottom one) and two prima donuts (top two).

A cool beverage which is also served.
