Hypnotic Donuts

imageHypnotic Donuts

Hypnotic Donuts is a small chain of doughnut shops, with its first store in Dallas, Texas and another in Denton, Texas. Amy and James St. Peter founded it in 2010. In addition to donuts, they also make chicken biscuits. It was the first doughnut shop to purvey vegan doughnuts in Dallas, Texas.

James and Amy determined that Hypnotic Donuts would be different in every way, especially in how it would be conceived and launched. James approached a donut shop that he frequented in Plano, TX, asked the owner’s son if his father would be interested in teaching James how to produce donuts, and the young man responded in the affirmative provided the training would begin at midnight. The training took about 3 weeks because of the language barrier, but because James had filmed all the lessons, he was able to continue his education by just watching the videos in his home.

Originally, the donuts were sold exclusively via social media with a very limited amount of orders being taken. These orders were delivered by means of a black Ford Expedition in randomly selected parking lots with cash as the only payment method.

As its customer base increased, Hypnotic Donuts expanded by renting a pizza restaurant, selling donuts out of it from 7am-10:30am on weekends. At this time, donut sales were generated only by word of mouth. Patrons would remark, “I found this place because I was wondering why there was a line outside the door of a pizza shop at 7am.”

Hypnotic Donuts was first housed at 9007 Garland Road, they opened a second location in Denton at 235 W. Hickory St between the downtown square and UNT campus. Hypnotic is now is the process of opening Hypnotic Emporium, a vintage candy and ice cream shop that will be located next door to Hypnotic Donuts in Dallas, on Garland Road.

All donuts are trans-fat free, handmade, hand cut and made fresh throughout the day. All icings, frostings and even the mustard for the biscuits are made in-house. The chicken biscuits were added to the menu six months after the opening of the Dallas store. All of the chicken is fresh, marinated 24 hours and cooked to order. Hypnotic Donuts has received numerous awards for their biscuits and because of this now uses the name Hypnotic Donuts and Biscuits.

Honey Dew Donuts was founded in Mansfield, Massachusetts, by Richard J. Bowen in 1973. In 1975, a customer suggested bringing a Honey Dew Donuts location to his community, who later became the first franchisee.

Bowen, who went by the nickname "Dick", was introduced to the aspect of donuts at the age of twelve by working with his father making donuts in a local donut shop in his community. He discovered his desire for a career in entrepreneurship while attending Stoughton High School, from which he graduated in 1965. After graduating from high school, Bowen enlisted in the army. He was relocated to Germany because of his deployment, where he worked as a donut baker and mechanic.

Krispy Kreme

imageKrispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. is an American global doughnut company and coffeehouse chain based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Krispy Kreme is to become a privately held company owned by JAB Beech, itself a private German investment firm. Krispy Kreme founder Vernon Rudolph bought a yeast-raised recipe from a New Orleans chef and, in 1937, rented a building in what is now historic Old Salem in Winston-Salem, and began selling to local grocery stores.

In the United States, Krispy Kreme's products are sold via their own outlets as well as through grocery, convenience stores and supermarkets. They are also available in other countries through various channels.

The company's growth was steady prior to its initial public offering but profits have decreased in recent quarters.

On February 24, 2015, Krispy Kreme opened its 1,000th shop in Kansas City, Kansas.

In 1933, eighteen-year-old Vernon Rudolph began working for his uncle, Ishmael Armstrong, who owned a small general store in Paducah, Kentucky that sold a wide variety of goods, including its very popular doughnuts. While the exact origin of the doughnut recipe remains partially a mystery, it is believed that Ishmael Armstrong was inspired by an Ohio River barge cook named Joseph LeBeouf who was famous for his light and fluffy doughnuts.

The store struggled during the Great Depression, so in 1934, Vernon and Ishmael decided to move to the larger city of Nashville, Tennessee where they hoped business would be better. The uncle and nephew focused solely on selling their doughnuts and opened "The Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company" in a rented store on Gallatin Road. The shop did so well that Vernon's father, Plumie, also left Kentucky and moved to Nashville to help sell doughnuts.

In 1937, Vernon Rudolph opened his own store, deciding on Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the location when he learned that his favorite cigarette company, Camel Cigarettes, was headquartered in the small North Carolina city. Rudolph primarily sold to convenience stores; however, he also sold hot doughnuts to individual customers who came during production time between midnight and 4 am. The first store in North Carolina was located in a rented building on South Main Street in Winston-Salem in what is now called historic Old Salem. The Krispy Kreme logo was designed by Benny Dinkins, a local architect. The first Krispy Kreme bakery outside the South opened in Akron, Ohio, in 1939.

Krispy Kreme operations by country

This is a page on the global operations of Krispy Kreme.

The Australian franchise agreement also covers New Zealand however currently there are no store locations there. On October 29, 2010, the Australian division went into voluntary administration, with media reports attributing this to poor sales. As a result of this administration, several stores closed in early November 2010. As of December 2010, they have come out of Administration, and have continued trading with their remaining stores in the states of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. With hour long waits during the opening of their drive-through restaurants, and to this day, a free hot Original Glazed doughnut is offered to every customer making a purchase. The Australian chain has a strong fundraising program which has helped schools, workplaces, charities and non-profit organisations to raise over 10 million dollars to date. Also, unique to Australia, is a range of ice creams. A number of Australian stores have also started selling a Bakery range, including sandwiches, croissants, muffins etc.. Krispy Kreme announced partnership with 7-Eleven in December 2011, and their products are currently sold in all 600 7-Eleven stores within Australia.

Krispy Kreme first opened in Australia in 2003 in Penrith, 60 km west of Sydney, just off Mulgoa Road in the Penrith Panthers Football Club complex. It was the first store in the world outside the United States. The store used to offer a 24-hour drive-through service. Before opening they gave away 300,000 free doughnuts for publicity.

Since then, ten Krispy Kreme stores have opened in NSW. They now have multiple stores inside Sydney Airport, as well as Krispy Kreme Mascot located at 7 Ross Smith Avenue, adjacent to the airport. Also Krispy Kreme Liverpool. Both of these store have 24-hour drive-thru. Other stores in NSW include Auburn (on parramatta road), and a small store at central station.

Krispy Kreme has two stores in Brisbane; the Brisbane Airport and in the Myer Centre, although many mini-stores or 'carts' are in various service centres along major roads. At some major BP gas stations, Krispy Kreme is annexed with Wild Bean Coffee and they even have deals combining products from both chains. The most recent Krispy Kreme outlet in Queensland opened at Pacific Fair, Broadbeach, on the Gold Coast. The Albert Street store in Brisbane closed down leaving the Myer Centre store the only Krispy Kreme store in the Brisbane CBD. The stores are supplied by daily deliveries of doughnuts cooked at the commissary facility in Logan, south of Brisbane.

List of doughnut shops

Doughnut shops (also spelled donut shops) specialize in the preparation and retail sales of doughnuts. A doughnut is a type of fried dough confectionery or dessert food. The doughnut is popular in many countries and prepared in various forms as a sweet snack that can be homemade or purchased in bakeries, supermarkets, food stalls, and franchised specialty outlets. They are usually deep-fried from a flour dough, and typically either ring-shaped or without a hole and often filled.

Doughnut shops have been described as common in Canada and as a "national institution", and doughnuts have been described as an "unofficial national food." Per capita, the largest concentration of doughnut shops in the world exist in Canada, and Japan has the second-highest concentration per capita. Per capita, Canadians eat the most doughnuts compared to all world countries. The large number of Tim Hortons restaurants in Canada (over 3,000) significantly contributes to this consumption rate.

Within the United States, the Providence metropolitan area was cited as having the most doughnut shops per capita (25.3 doughnut shops per 100,000 people) as of January 13, 2010. Many doughnut shops, such as U.S. national chains, serve coffee as an accompaniment to doughnuts.
