Blenz Coffee


Blenz Coffee (a.k.a. Blenz The Canadian Coffee Company) is a Canadian franchise chain of coffee shops. The first shop was opened in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1992. The chain has since grown to include a network of popular franchised locations, 63 in British Columbia and 1 in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

While Blenz is mainly known as a coffee house, Blenz also serves loose leaf teas from around the world as well as hot chocolate drinks made with Belgian chocolate chips. Blenz is well known for including latte art on their drinks.

Bridgehead is a fair trade coffeehouse chain based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. In addition to coffee and organic teas, it sells soups, salads, sandwiches and snacks made in its own kitchen. In November 2006, Bridgehead was voted Ottawa’s “Best Coffee/Tea House” by readers of lifestyle weekly Ottawa XPress. Bridgehead also sells coffee by mail through its website.

Bridgehead was formed in Toronto, Ontario, originally as Bridgehead Trading, in 1981, by two United Church ministers and two social activists who were concerned with small-scale coffee farmers in Nicaragua.

Bridgehead was the first company to offer Canadian consumers fairly traded coffee, as a group of volunteers sold coffee from the basements of churches in Toronto. The business grew rapidly and was soon acquired by Oxfam Canada in 1984.

Under Oxfam Canada, Bridgehead became a formally incorporated, for-profit company. Oxfam Canada’s aim was not to focus on the coffee that Bridgehead was funded and grew from, but to bring in a more diverse fair-trade product line. This eventually led to a decrease in profits and eventually a dip into losses. A profile of Bridgehead’s post-Oxfam management in the Ottawa Citizen claimed that Oxfam Canada's Bridgehead ultimately failed in the mid-1990s due in part a “lack of sound business practices."

In May 1998, Bridgehead was acquired by Shared Interest. This U.K. based lending society held the Bridgehead name in hopes of finding a buyer. Shared Interest only needed to hold the name for a year as in 1999; an offer arrived from Tracey Clark.

Clark wanted to restore Bridgehead to its former status as a fair-trade coffee and tea company. In April 2000, Bridgehead Inc. was formed, and on June 17, 2000, the first Bridgehead Coffeehouse opened at 362 Richmond Road in Westboro, Ottawa, Ontario. Clark originally relied on financing from family and friends, but by 2002, Bridgehead was owned by 30 investors. Bridgehead expanded from one outlet in 2000 to nine by 2008, and currently operates twenty outlets.

June 2012 marked the opening of Bridgehead’s own roastery, which is now where all of the coffee that is sold by the company is roasted. A further development is the introduction of alcohol to Bridgeheads beverage lineup. As of September 2015, select Bridgehead locations began to offer beer from local breweries Beau’s and Beyond the Pale, as well as wine and coffee-inspired cocktails. In 2017, Bridgehead began working with Carleton University's Mass Spectrometry Centre to uncover answers about how coffee beans age on a cellular level.

Coffee Time is a chain of Canadian coffee shops. The company is a competitor of the Tim Hortons chain in the Greater Toronto Area. It is headquartered in Scarborough, Ontario.

Coffee Time was founded in 1982 by Tom Michalopoulos in Bolton, Ontario, and now operates 300 stores in Ontario, Alberta, and Quebec, as well as:

In October 2006, Chairman's Brand Corporation (Coffee Time's parent company) purchased the Afton Food Group, which owned Robin's Donuts, 241 Pizza, and Mrs. Powell's Cinnamon Buns.

An indoor soccer arena was built in 1998 in Vaughan, Ontario, and it was named "Coffee Time Arena." Located about 300 m east of Martin Grove Road (location number 7500/7700), it is near an industrialized area and north of Vaughan Grove Sports Park. The complex also includes an outdoor soccer field. The name was used for only three years before the arena was sold and renamed "The Soccer Centre" in the early-2000s.

Country Style Food Services, Inc., formerly Country Style Donuts, is a fast/casual chain of coffee shops operating primarily in the Canadian province of Ontario (where it ranks second among coffee chains), which serves oatmeal, soup, sandwiches, salads, and coffee. The chain is based in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

In January 2006, there were 120 "traditional" locations in Ontario. There are over 420 "non-traditional" locations embedded in other stores such as gas stations, convenience stores, arenas and movie theatres. Over 70% of customer purchases in 2001 were coffee. In total, Country Style has over 1000 locations in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick under the Country Style/Bistro name.

Country Style has been in business since 1963 when it opened its first location in Toronto. Donut stores only accounted for about 17% of donut sales in Canada at that time so there was still a lot of room for growth (most were sold at supermarkets in bulk). Country Style experienced a lot of growth early on, opening 100 stores in the first 15–20 years of existence. It had 50 outlets in 1974 when it was the leading coffee and donut establishment in Canada above Tim Hortons (which passed it two years later). It began to expand into Western Canada in the 1970s (including Vancouver and Calgary) and the East in the early 1980s. Poor results caused the franchise to withdraw from these regions: locations in Alberta were the only ones to survive into the 1990s, while in the East, it was ones in Nova Scotia and PEI.

By 2001, Country Style had been forced to close a quarter of its stores due to decreasing market share in an increasingly competitive Canadian market. Since then, it has opened many new stores and now ranks third behind Tim Hortons and Starbucks in the Canadian coffee market. On November 1, 2011, its parent company, MTY Food Group, bought Mr. Sub for $23 million merging it with Country style to become Country Style Food Services Holdings Inc.

In the mid-1990s the Country Style logo was changed to use a font similar to Palatino instead of its former handwriting font.

In 2006, Country Style changed its image to a more upscale style: "Country Style Bistro Deli". The new image includes a new logo, a new website, and an enhanced branded deli menu that will be phased into all stores. The logo still uses the Palatino style font and will also be phased into all stores. New stores will feature more modern design features, somewhat similar to Starbucks, and provides wide range of wraps, smoothies, breakfast, salads and sweets. In 2009, the brand rights to Country Style, used at 900 locations, were purchased by MTY Food Group of Montreal for $14.6 million in cash and debt.

Donut Diner


Donut Diner was a Canadian coffee and doughnut franchise with locations and kiosks in and around the Niagara Region and greater Golden Horseshoe areas of Ontario. It was established in 1988 in St. Catharines, Ontario and grew to 30 outlets in the Niagara Peninsula. It was renowned for its old fashioned style of baked goods, its 1950s-era decor, and unique local flavour until the chain went bankrupt in 2005. All corporate owned locations closed that year, while franchised locations remained opened being allowed to continue to use the name Donut Diner without corporate support. Over the years many franchised locations have closed and very few locations remain. Avondale Food Stores Limited, a partner of The Donut Diner, still sells and promotes its coffee in some of their convenience stores.

At its peak, all Donut Diner locations were open 24 hours a day and was a major competitor to national donut giant Tim Hortons in Niagara and the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario.

The Donut Diner corporate offices were located in St. Catharines, Ontario. There were approximately 50 operational franchises and at least a dozen kiosks in the Golden Horseshoe.

Founded by Doug Williamson and Gary Buckland in Canada in 1993, the intellectual property and trademark rights for the business are now owned by New Zealand-based Cooks Global Foods Limited globally and by Retail Food Group in Australia

The first Esquires Coffee House opened in the suburb of Sunshine Hills, a residential district of the city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1993. The business was started by Doug Williamson and Gary Buckland, 24 year old entrepreneurs and local business graduates. 37 branches were opened across Canada, primarily on the west coast of British Columbia, before the company went international on a franchise basis.

Esquires expanded to the United Kingdom in 2000, followed by Ireland in 2001. Peter Kirton purchased the master license rights for Esquires Coffee U.K. Limited, which he held until purchased by Cooks Global Foods in 2013. Tony McVerry purchased the master license rights for Esquires Coffee Ireland, which he held until purchased by Cooks Global Foods in 2013.

In 2002, brothers Stuart and Lewis Deeks established the Esquires brand in Australasia through a master franchise agreement with the Canadian parent. Under the name Franchise Development Ltd, they grew the business to become the leading branded chain in New Zealand by store numbers.

In 2011, the Deeks sold the Australia and New Zealand franchise rights to Retail Food Group while retaining the rights to the Middle East, China and a number of other jurisdictions.

In 2013, the Deeks merged their business into NZX-listed Cooks Global Foods. In April 2013, Cooks acquired the intellectual property and master franchising rights to Esquires Coffee Houses worldwide - excluding New Zealand and Australia. The company also owns wholesale businesses in related industries. Cooks immediately hired Doug Williamson, one of the original founders, to re-join the organisation and run the United Kingdom business. Under Doug's leadership, Esquires Coffee U.K. have rebranded most of their estate, have implemented new food programs and are aggressively marketing Esquires Coffee as a solid franchise investment opportunity. Esquires Coffee U.K. are currently focused on securing multi-store franchise partnerships with investment groups and are aggressively promoting Esquires Master License opportunities in Scotland and Wales. The company plans to open 8 new outlets in the U.K. by March 31, 2017, and expect to have 200+ shops by 2021, which it will achieve through multi-store partnerships, joint ventures, cooperate partnerships, and acquisitions.

Le Hibou Coffee House


Le Hibou Coffee House was an internationally known coffee house established in Ottawa, Canada, operating from 1960 to 1975.

Denis Faulkner, an Ottawa francophone, was the founding owner manager from 1960 to 1968. It was during this period that Le Hibou became established as a now famous embryo of the arts. There was no arts centre at that time in the capital city. The National Arts Centre opened in 1969. Faulkner presented pocket experimental theater in French and English - some original works, poetry readings, chansonniers from Quebec, the Maritime provinces and France, children's programming, comedy, blues, jazz, rock and folk singing. His objective was to provide an environment that encouraged talent and at the same time groomed local audiences.

In 1965, Faulkner, along with friend and Ottawa architect Matt Stankiewicz, selected and converted a larger site at 521 Sussex Drive to what is now most popularly known as the location of Le Hibou. This heritage building was owned by the National Capital Commission. Le Hibou was not independently wealthy and relied on the Ottawa community to be involved in the experiment. The National Capital Commission was a major contributor to the club through charging below market rent. The Commission's vision was linked to fostering the development of the Byward Market as the hub of Ottawa night life. [citation required] Le Hibou and several original boutiques set the concept in motion. Stankovicz and Faulkner converted an unoccupied warehouse to a friendly cafe with high ceilings and excellent acoustics. They kept the original tin engraved ceilings and brick interior walls. They lined another wall with floor to ceiling roughly finished BC fir, which inhibited sound echo.

On February 28, 1969 George Harrison visited the Le Hibou where he saw The Modern Rock Quartet perform. George was staying at the Chateau Laurier and was in Ottawa primarily to determine whether Apple records should sign American Folk Singer Eric Anderson whom he saw perform at the Capitol Theatre.
