The Purple Onion was opened by Barry Witkin, Sam Gutmacher and Al Lastman (brother of former Toronto mayor Mel Lastman) in 1960 and was one of the first coffee houses to be opened in the Yorkville area of Toronto. Witkin reported in the Toronto Star that they “They pooled their savings, rented the building for about $750 a month and charged $1 club memberships and entrance fees of $1.50 to $3.” In keeping with the strict liquor laws of the day the venue did not have a liquor license and no alcoholic beverages could be served.

It was reputed to be the first place to host singer Carly Simon, who early on performed as a duo with her sister Lucy Simon. Salt Spring Coffee

Salt Spring Coffee is a business that produces roasted coffee beans and operates several cafés. The company was founded in 1996 by Mickey McLeod and his wife Robbyn Scott who operated an organic market garden on the island. They had been roasting coffee beans for their own consumption but eventually added their coffee to their product line. Headquartered on Saltspring Island in British Columbia, the company differentiates itself in the market by following sustainability values in their corporate vision statement. The Salt Spring Coffee Company operates two cafés: one located at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal, and one in Ganges on Salt Spring Island. Their coffees are marketed as by being Fair to Farmer Direct, certified organic, fair trade, shade grown, and carbon neutral. They maintain organic certification through the Pacific Agricultural Certification Society.

To become carbon neutral they audited their energy consumption, took measures to reduce their emissions, and purchased carbon offsets. Their audit found they produce 263 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2007, half of which came from roasting their beans. The measures they took to reduce their emissions included having the green beans shipped directly to Vancouver rather than unloading in San Francisco and trucking the rest of the way, using bio-diesel fuel in delivery trucks, and upgrading to energy efficient equipment. They purchase their offsets from the Carbonfund Foundation and Offsetters. The company claims to the first carbon neutral coffee sold in Canada. Salt Spring Coffee was recognized by the David Suzuki Foundation in their 2010 report Doing Business in a New Climate. The report outlines Salt Springs Coffee's Carbon Cool initiative, which set out in 2007 with the goal of offering one of the world’s first carbon neutral cups of coffee.

Snakes and Lattes

imageSnakes and Lattes

Snakes and Lattes is a board game cafe chain in Toronto, Canada, with three venues located at 600 Bloor Street Wes, 489 College Street, and 45 Eglinton Avenue E. Guests pay a small cover charge to play board games for as long as they like, choosing from the cafe's collection of about 3,000 games. There was no wifi available at the original cafe when it first opened as the focus is on playing games and socialising with friends, however, public wi-fi was installed in both locations to accommodate the morning business and student crowd. The cafes serve light food and beverage items, including some draft beers.

Snakes and Lattes was opened on August 30, 2010 by Ben Castanie and Aurelia Peynet, at what later became known as Snakes and Lattes' Annex location. The couple had moved to Toronto from France four years earlier, and came up with the idea for Snakes and Lattes, which they named after the Canadian children's game Snakes and Ladders, from a visit to a Chicago area game store in 2008. Over the next two years, they slowly built up their sizable game collection to prepare for the 2010 opening.

As the cafe gained popularity it quickly outgrew its seating capacity. In 2011, the adjacent property was purchased and the wall between the two properties was demolished, adding roughly 2,000 square feet to the existing café and increasing capacity from 45 to 150 seats. With 7,500 square feet of space, Snakes and Lattes was, according to its managers, the biggest board game café in the world in January 2016.

In January 2014, a second location was opened, a board game bar called Snakes & Lagers. Also in 2014, Snakes and Lattes became a sponsor of the Toronto International Film Festival, offering a board game concierge for interested visitors.

In July 2015, The Globe and Mail reported that a sitcom, Snakes and Lattes: The Show, would air starting in September as a fictionalized account of the cafe's early years.

In September 2015, Snakes & Lagers closed, but immediately reopened in a larger space across the street under the name Snakes & Lattes College in the space that was formerly occupied by the Andy Poolhall bar. The new location features space for 240 guests, a collection of more than 1,000 games, and a combination of the Lattes and Lagers concepts, offering beer, wine, and assorted coffee based beverages.

In December 2017, Snakes and Lattes opened corporate's flagship location in Midtown at 45 Eglinton Ave East, Toronto, Canada The new location covers 10,000 square feet and three floors.

The Bulldog

The Bulldog is an Amsterdam-based company that owns and operates a chain of cannabis coffee shops and a hotel in Canada: the merchandising brand name is the same as the company name. The group logo consists of a cartoon figure of a bulldog in a round frame.

Henk de Vries began selling marijuana in 1970 at the Kralingen Music Festival, a pop festival in Kralingse Bos. In 1975 he converted his father's sex shop in Amsterdam's red-light district into The Bulldog coffee shop and began slowly expanding. Henk asked ex-pat Australian artist Harold Thornton to paint some signage on the front of the 1st Bulldog Coffeeshop Nr.90 but Harold turned this exercise into a mural that goes across the front of the whole shop. The mural helped the coffeeshop become a magnet for backpackers and tourists and its reputation grew. In 2001 the company began distributing internationally. The group operates hotels in Amsterdam and Canada.

In 2010 The Bulldog was ordered to cease the sale and distribution of its own brand of energy drink, following a lengthy legal dispute with Red Bull GmbH, makers of Red Bull.

The Bulldog™ chain owns and operates The Bulldog Hotel Silver Star, a small hotel with 26 guest rooms, and also houses the 150-cover Grand Café (inside, covered patio and uncovered patio) as well as the 49-cover Hideaway Lounge (wine bar) in Silver Star Mountain Resort, British Columbia, Canada. The Bulldog Hotel Silver Star also manages Silver Star Accommodation, the largest independent vacation rental pool on Silver Star Mountain. There are 80 properties in this rental pool including everything from a 6-bedroom luxury house to studio condominiums and everything in between.
