La Belle Province (restaurant)

La Belle Province (English: The Beautiful Province) is a well-known fast food restaurant chain in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is also known as LBP, LB, BP, La Belle Pro, Belle Pro, La Belle or Labelle, as nicknames. Each location is independently franchised; some are open 24 hours a day.

Founder Peter Kivetos, a native of Greece, opened the first La Belle Province on Sherbrooke Street East in 1970. He took the name with permission from a restaurant on Saint Catherine Street where he had worked, which had burned down in the 1960s. It became a franchise when the second location was opened in Saint-Hubert in 1976.

Kivetos' ownership group had 45 locations in 1997. By 1999 there were 125 locations under the name La Belle Province. It is not strictly a franchise operation, in 1999 there were six different ownership groups, mostly relatives of Kivetos.

In 2010, two restaurant owners were fined $22,000 for failure to pay the Goods and Services Tax and were charged an additional $45,000 for the amount that they owed.

A Quebec judge ruled that the La Belle Province franchise owners could not prevent others from giving a similar name to their restaurants, because "la belle province" is an official nickname for the province of Quebec. This resulted in several knock-off franchises that had menus and prices similar to the original franchise in order to capitalize on its existing image and marketing. Notable knock-offs include Belle Province II, La Plus Belle Province, La Belle Québécoise and La Très Belle Province.

The Big Smoke Burger was founded by Somali Canadian Mustafa Yusuf in November 2007, originally under the name Craft Burger. It rebranded to Big Smoke Burger in 2011 after Yusuf was unable to secure a trademark for the original name. The new name was chosen as "Big Smoke" has been a noted nickname for the city of Toronto, which is where the company has its headquarters located at.

In 2013, the company began to expand its reach into the Middle East and the United States. As of October 2016, 19 locations were in operation worldwide.

Blimpie International, Inc., is a submarine sandwich chain in the United States. The company is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was founded in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1964, by three friends, and has since endured three ownership changes.

The first Blimpie store opened on May 16, 1964, in Hoboken, New Jersey. By mid-2002, there were about 2,000 Blimpie outlets in operation, located in 47 states and in 15 other countries. Blimpie does not own many stores corporately, but relies on revenue from franchises. In addition to traditional locations, Blimpie can also be found in a variety of nontraditional sites, such as inside convenience stores, gasoline station food marts, schools, office complexes, hospitals, and sports arenas. The number of Blimpie locations declined by over 60% through 2011.

A key area of growth is in the development or acquisition of other brands. In 1999, the company launched Pasta Central, a franchised chain within the "home meal replacement" category featuring Italian-style pasta and pizza; the concept was exclusively a vehicle for co-branded Blimpie/Pasta Central outlets. Two years earlier, Blimpie International acquired majority control of Maui Tacos, a Mexican quick-service restaurant chain. Along with Maui Tacos came its offshoot founded in 1998, Smoothie Island.

The first Blimpie sub shop opened on May 16, 1964, in Hoboken by Tony Conza, Peter DeCarlo, and Angelo Bandassare, former high school friends and classmates at Saint Peter's Prep in Jersey City. Inspired by the successful Point Pleasant operation Mike's Submarines (later Jersey Mike's Subs), the three speculated that a similar restaurant would do well in Hoboken. The store's name came about because Tony Conza preferred not to call the sandwiches subs, which he felt sounded like a greasy spoon. Conza preferred the term hoagies, but Hoboken residents were unfamiliar with the Philadelphia term. He scanned a dictionary until he found "Blimp", a word that sounded to him most like a sandwich. The original Blimpie store was a hit, and, before long, customers began asking about franchises. The first franchise was sold to a friend in western New York for $600 during the company's first year of operation.

The chain specializes in smoothies composed of a pure juice, fruit sorbet or vanilla frozen yogurt, frozen fruit, fresh yogurt and ice. Founded in 1999 in Sherwood Park, Alberta, the company has grown to have 285 traditional and 20 non-traditional locations in Canada, 1 in India, 2 in the United States and 3 in Mexico. Further global expansion is planned, despite established competitors Jamba Juice and Smoothie King in the US.

Booster Juice utilizes the franchise business model, with the head office owning fewer than 1% as corporate stores at any one time.

The smoothies offered by Booster Juice come with a choice of "boosters", or nutritional additives such as protein, echinacea, fibre, and other products such as ginseng or rosehip.

Some drinks offered by Booster Juice contain less common food products, including Matcha, Açaí fruit, a Brazilian fruit produced by the Acai Palm, and Wheatgrass.

Dale Wishewan and Jonathan Amack founded Booster Juice in 1999 when they realized the market for juice bars in Canada. Prior to opening the first Booster Juice, Wishewan tested the idea at his home by offering smoothies to family and neighbours. Shortly afterwards, the first Booster Juice location opened in November 1999 in Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton.

Booster Juice expanded rapidly to include different parts of the country, with the bulk of its stores located in Western Canada. Encouraged by this success, Wishewan and Amack have entered international markets in Europe and the Middle East.
