Burger Baron

imageBurger Baron

The Burger Baron name is used by several fast-food restaurants in Western Canada.

Founded in 1957 in either Calgary or Lethbridge, Alberta (the location and ownership of the first site is disputed), Burger Baron was the first drive-through chain in Western Canada. The company expanded quickly throughout the region but suffered when the big American chains began to move to the area. The original franchise operation collapsed into bankruptcy and current restaurants are independently operated, with different menus, recipes, signage and advertising. Today, there are still dozens of Burger Barons throughout Western Canada, but they are mostly concentrated around Edmonton and in small towns in Alberta. Many of the owners are Lebanese Canadians, connected to Rudy Kemaldean of Calgary, who bought the first of his seven restaurants in 1964, hired family and friends and encouraged them to open their own operations under the Burger Baron name.

Among other things, Burger Baron is famous for being endorsed by former Edmonton Oilers hockey coach Glen Sather.

Several Burger Baron buildings formerly belonged to other chains. Five of them were part of the local Burger King chain, which became defunct when the worldwide Burger King company acquired the rights to the name for northern Alberta in 1995. The local Burger King chain had previously held franchising rights to Kentucky Fried Chicken, and had buildings in the then-standard KFC design. The Burger Baron on 111 Avenue formerly housed the Burger King headquarters along with a Burger King/Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet.

An attempt in the 1980s to return to a franchise system ended when independent owners were unable to reach agreement. A legal dispute over the trademark between family members of early owners was settled in the 1990s.

Burger Barons typically feature multiple unusual variations of hamburger, such as a "Salisbury Burger", and a "Teriyaki Burger". Their mushroom burger is particularly popular. In recent years one the chain's main features has been Halifax-style donairs.

Burger King

www.bk.com

Burger King (BK) is an American global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants. Headquartered in the unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County, Florida, the company was founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida-based restaurant chain. After Insta-Burger King ran into financial difficulties in 1954, its two Miami-based franchisees David Edgerton and James McLamore purchased the company and renamed it "Burger King." Over the next half-century, the company would change hands four times, with its third set of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, taking it public in 2002. In late-2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in the company, in a deal valued at US$3.26 billion. The new owners promptly initiated a restructuring of the company to reverse its fortunes. 3G, along with partner Berkshire Hathaway, eventually merged the company with the Canadian-based doughnut chain Tim Hortons, under the auspices of a new Canadian-based parent company named Restaurant Brands International.

The 1970s were the "Golden Age" of the company's advertising, but beginning in the early-1980s, Burger King advertising began losing focus. A series of less successful advertising campaigns created by a procession of advertising agencies continued for the next two decades. In 2003, Burger King hired the Miami-based advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky (CP+B), who completely reorganized it's advertising with a series of new campaigns centered on a redesigned Burger King character nicknamed "The King," accompanied by a new online presence. While highly successful, some of CP+B's commercials were derided for perceived sexism or cultural insensitivity. Burger King's new owner, 3G Capital, later terminated the relationship with CP+B in 2011 and moved its advertising to McGarryBowen, to begin a new product-oriented campaign with expanded demographic targeting.

Burger King (Alberta)

Burger King was a fast food restaurant chain in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Also known as Burger King Drive-Inn, it was founded by former Imperial Oil executives William R. Jarvis (1926-21 July 2014) and James Duncan Rae (3 September 1923 - 17 December 2014) in 1956. Among the first American-style fast food restaurants in Edmonton, it was not related to the worldwide Burger King chain. Company headquarters was in offices above one of the restaurants, at 9501 111 Avenue. Its signature item was a mushroom burger.

By 1975, when McDonald's opened its first Edmonton restaurant near Capilano Mall, Burger King had 12 outlets. At the time, the company held a franchise for Kentucky Fried Chicken in Edmonton, with its outlets using dual branding. However, as the market became more competitive, the relationship between the two companies deteriorated, with KFC taking legal action to end the partnership. Burger King was ultimately forced to stop selling Kentucky Fried Chicken at the end of 1979.

Jarvis and Rae sold their restaurants in 1990 but retained the "Burger King" trademark, which they held for northern Alberta following an earlier dispute with the worldwide chain. In August 1995, they sold the naming rights for $1 million to their former rival. It immediately announced its intention to enter the market, the last region of North America where it had been unable to operate, other than Mattoon, Illinois, where another restaurant uses the name.

Several Burger King restaurants became Burger Barons.

Chez Ashton

Chez Ashton is a popular fast food restaurant in Quebec, Canada famous for its poutine. Chez Ashton's origins can be traced to a traveling snack cart started by Ashton Leblond in 1969. It was not until 1972, however, that poutine was first offered. Ashton hooked his customers by initially giving free samples of his poutine. The enterprise grew in popularity until Leblond was able to open a restaurant with a dining room open year-round in 1976. Today, the franchise has grown to include 25 restaurants in the Quebec City region.

Chez Ashton is also famous for its winter promotion scheme during the month of January. The price of poutine drops with the temperature. If the temperature is −30 °C (−22 °F), the customer receives a 30% discount on poutine.

Chicken Delight

imageChicken Delight

Chicken Delight is a chain of restaurants offering eat in, take out, and delivery service with a menu featuring chicken, pizza and ribs. Based in Winnipeg, the chain mostly has outlets in that city and throughout Manitoba. Although as of 2017 six Chicken Delight restaurants are located in the New York metro area, none of these are included in the corporate web site list of franchise locations.

The current operation is a relic of a much larger chain. Founded in Illinois in 1952, the chain grew to over 1,000 locations in the 1960s. It was purchased by Consolidated Foods in 1964. Its jingle "Don't cook tonight, call Chicken Delight", emphasizing their delivery service, was widely broadcast on American radio.

By the late 1960s, however, Chicken Delight in the US was a troubled operation. While emerging chains like McDonald's ensured that each and every outlet provided a product that met the franchisor's most exacting standards, the quality-control of Chicken Delight outlets in the US was lax. The company was fighting the battle of people who, having had a bad experience in one single outlet, generalized that to the whole chain, then told their friends to stay away.

At the same time, Chicken Delight was finding itself under increasing pressure from a fast-growing competitor, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Even though Chicken Delight and KFC were founded in the same year, Chicken Delight had grown far more quickly. KFC, in many markets, was just beginning to take hold. The competition became particularly strong when KFC added a new chicken product to their menu with a similar taste and texture to Chicken Delight's that they dubbed "Extra-Crispy."

In 1979 Otto Koch, owner of the successful Chicken Delight Canada Ltd., purchased the remaining rump of the American operations, and a handful of true Chicken Delight stores can once again be found in the US operating under modern quality-control and contractual conditions.

Chicken Delight serves all types of chicken products such as chicken wings, buffalo wings, chicken fingers, and chicken burgers. Other food products that the chain also offers are pizza, popcorn shrimp, and ribs. Sides also include french fries, onion rings, poutine (mostly used in Canadian locations), potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw. Gravy may also be added as a side as well. The only dessert product that Chicken Delight offers is a homemade individual cheesecake.

The chain also features Pizza and Chicken combos and individual and family dinners. All the individual dinners come with sides of fries, coleslaw, and a bread roll. The family dinner comes with the same sides as the individual dinners, but gravy is added. The Pizza and Chicken combos consist of a pie and a range from 6-15 pieces of chicken, comes complete with fries and gravy as the sides.
