The Toyota Etios is a line of four-door sedan and five-door hatchback subcompact cars produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota for the Indian automotive market since 2010, for South Africa and Brazil since 2012 and Indonesia since 2013 (1.2 litre petrol hatchback). The Etios nameplate comes from the Greek "Ethos", meaning spirit, character, and ideas. The sedan version was launched in December 2010 and the Liva hatchback was launched in June 2011. In May 2012, the Etios Series reached total sales of 100,000 units in India.
The Etios has been facelifted twice, in March 2013 and November 2014. No changes to the overall design were made, but there were changes to the interiors, grille, and tail lamps. Toyota introduced the Etios MR2 in 2010, designating it the model code "AK10". When fitted with the 1.2-liter 3NR-FE engine, it is known as the "NGK12". Likewise, the 1.5-liter 2NR version is identified by the "NGK15" code. The 1.4-liter 1ND diesel version is referred to as the "NUK15". The Etios is based on the EFC platform.
Available in hatchback and sedan bodies, the concept vehicles were developed for Indian market.
An Etios Concept sedan with 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an Etios Concept hatchback with 1.2-liter gasoline engine were unveiled in 10th Auto Expo automobile show in New Delhi.
The Toyota Etios was first showcased at the 2010 Auto Expo in Delhi as a 'concept car'. Actual commercial production started in late 2010. The sedan version was launched in December 2010. It competes with the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, Mahindra Verito, Chevrolet Sail, Ford Figo Aspire and Ford Fiesta Classic. Trim levels for the Etios are: G, GX, V, and VX.
The Petrol Engine and Transmission are made locally at Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts (TKAP), Bidadi, Karnataka, India.
