Tigray Region (ክልል ትግራይ kilil Tigrāy) is the northernmost of the nine regions (kililat) of Ethiopia. Tigray is the homeland of the Tigrayans, Irob and Kunama peoples. Tigray is also known as Region 1 according to the federal constitution. Its capital is Mek'ele (also spelt Mekelle). Tigray is the 5th largest by area, the 5th most populous, and the 6th most densely populated of the 9 Regional States. The state's capital and largest city is Mekelle.
Tigray is bordered by Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, the Afar Region to the east, and the Amhara Region to the south and southwest. Besides Mek'ele, major cities include Adigrat, Aksum, Shire, Humera, Adwa, Alamata, Wukro, Maychew, Sheraro, Abiy Adi, Korem, Qwiha, Hawzen, Mekoni and Zalambessa. There is also the historically significant town of Yeha.
The government of Tigray is composed of the executive branch, led by the President; the legislative branch, which comprises the State Council; and the judicial branch, which is led by the state Supreme Court.
