Thornapple Township is a civil township of Barry County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,884 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous township in Barry County.
Thornapple Township is located in the northwest corner of Barry County. It includes the village of Middleville, population 3,319. Michigan state highway M-37 passes through the center of the township, leading southeast 11 miles (18 km) to Hastings, the county seat, and 22 miles (35 km) north to downtown Grand Rapids. The Thornapple River, a tributary of the Grand River, flows from south to north through the middle of the township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Thornapple Township has a total area of 35.9 square miles (93.1 km2), of which 35.3 square miles (91.4 km2) is land and 0.66 square miles (1.7 km2), or 1.80%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 6,685 people, 2,292 households, and 1,835 families residing in the township. The population density was 188.3 per square mile (72.7/km²). There were 2,383 housing units at an average density of 67.1 per square mile (25.9/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.89% White, 0.15% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 1.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.
