The Rise of Sivagami is an Indian historical fiction novel and the first book in the literary series Baahubali: Before the Beginning, authored by Anand Neelakantan and a prequel to the film Baahubali: The Beginning. It was originally released in English on 7 March 2017, with its Hindi, Telugu and Tamil versions releasing in April 2017. It is a part of the Baahubali franchise.
The story revolves around Sivagami, a character in Baahubali Series. The novel is intended to fill the blanks in the Baahubali films.Baahubali director S. S. Rajamouli has confirmed that a television miniseries will be released based on this novel. It also tells the readers the backstory of Kattappa, another important character.
Sivagami hates the Mahishmati royal family and their king Somadeva because they executed her father Devaraya. Her stepfather, Thimma, drops her off at the royal orpahange. Mahishmati was originally ruled by a tribal group called Vaithailis. They had given shelter to Uthama Varma, who stole the secret Gaurikanth, a special stone derived from the volcano Amma Gauri that, if mixed with metal weapons, makes the wielder of the weapon invincible. Uthama Varma chases the Vaithailis into the forest using Gaurikanth and established the Mahishmati kingdom. King Somadeva has two children, namely Bijjaladeva and Mahadeva. Bijjaladeva is the eldest son, who is brave but corrupt, while Mahadeva is his exact opposite. The Vaithailis attack the royal palace. Mahadeva defends his kingdom and begets the title of Vikramadeva. Sivagami, who had originally arrived at Mahismati with the intention to kill Somadeva, is heaped praises upon her as she bravely kills the king's assassin and is given the title of Bhoomipathi: the executioner. For an unsuspecting Sivagami, her first execution happens to be her stepfather, Thimma.
