Terre Haute (/ˌtɛrə ˈhoʊt/ TERR-ə HOHT) is a city in and the county seat of Vigo County, Indiana, United States, near the state's western border with Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 60,785 and its metropolitan area had a population of 170,943. The city is the self-proclaimed capital of the Wabash Valley. With several higher education institutions including Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, Indiana State University, Saint Mary of-the Woods College, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technologylocated in Terre Haute, the city has embraced its college town persona. Terre Haute was named the "Community of the Year" in 2010 by the Indiana Chamber and was a quarter-finalist in the America's Best Communities contest operated by Frontier Telephone and Dish Network. Terre Haute was the home of Socialist Party of America leader and five-time presidential nominee Eugene V. Debs. His former home is now a museum located on the campus of Indiana State University.
