Super Mario Odyssey is an upcoming platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch, currently set for release worldwide in late 2017. It will be the latest title in the Super Mario series, returning to the more open world style of gameplay previously featured in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine.

Super Mario Odyssey puts players in the role of Mario as he travels across various lands beyond the Mushroom Kingdom. The game returns to the freeform open world level design previously featured in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. The game also features levels inspired by real-world locations such as "New Donk City", inspired by New York City. Mario retains several of his classic platforming techniques, such as wall-jumping and ledge-grabbing. A new feature of the game is Mario's ability to throw his cap, where he can use it like a spring, allowing him to reach higher ledges or cross long gaps.

Super Mario Odyssey was first teased when Nintendo released the announcement trailer for the Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2016. The game was fully announced at the Nintendo Switch presentation on January 13, 2017, with series creator Shigeru Miyamoto stating that the game would "go back to the roots", appealing to a more core demographic than the more recent "casual-friendly" iterations of the Super Mario series. Shortly after, gameplay footage was provided at a Japanese presentation.

Further details and public demos will be unveiled at Nintendo's presentation at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2017 in June, where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé stated that players would be allowed a "hands-on perspective" of the game.
