It is located in the province of Western Finland and is part of the Southern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 2,213 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 551.95 square kilometres (213.11 sq mi) of which 22.17 km2 (8.56 sq mi) is water. The population density is 4.01 inhabitants per square kilometre (10.4/sq mi).
