It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 5,114 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 787.33 square kilometres (303.99 sq mi) of which 13.55 km2 (5.23 sq mi) is water.
