It is located in the province of Oulu and is part of the Northern Ostrobothnia region. The municipality has a population of 5,114 (31 March 2016) and covers an area of 787.33 square kilometres (303.99 sq mi) of which 13.55 km2 (5.23 sq mi) is water. The population density is 6.5 inhabitants per square kilometre (17/sq mi).
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
