Qatargas is the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) company. It annually produces and supplies the globe with 42 million metric tons of LNG from across its four ventures (Qatargas 1, Qatargas 2, Qatargas 3, and Qatargas 4). It is headquartered in Doha, Qatar, and maintains its upstream assets in Ras Laffan, Qatar. Natural gas is supplied to Qatargas's LNG trains from Qatar's massive North Field, by far the world's largest non-associated gas field. Together with RasGas, it reached a record LNG production of 77 million tones per annum in December 2010.

In 1971 natural gas was discovered off Qatar's northeast coast.

Over the course of more than ten years, wells were drilled in order to evaluate the size of the gas field. In 1985 it was officially established that Qatar's North Field is the largest non-associated natural gas field in the world. It is part of the South Pars/North Dome Gas-Condensate field which lies in the Persian Gulf and is shared by Iran and Qatar.

The North Field stretches over more than 6,000 square kilometers and is assumed to hold reserves of more than 900 trillion standard cubic feet (tscf). This equals approximately 10%-15% of the world’s known natural gas supply and places Qatar third after Russia and Iran as the country with the largest total natural gas resources.

The development of the vast resources in the North Field provided a major challenge and financial investment for Qatar. The Emirate committed to develop the field in a way that guarantees that the reserves will last at least 100 years.

Therefore the Qatargas Liquified Gas Company Limited ("QG1" or "Quatargas 1") was established in 1984 as a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil and other partners. In the following years, with the foreign expertise, the company began developing the North Field and erected the first three LNG trains (Train 1, 2 and 3) with a design capacity of 3.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) each. The trains were built in 1996, 1997 and 1998 respectively.
