Purdue University Northwest is a comprehensive regional university with two campuses located in Northwest Indiana, near Chicago and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. With more than 15,000 students and nearly 70 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, Purdue Northwest is the fifth largest public university in Indiana.
Purdue University's presence in northwest Indiana began with the establishment of extension centers in Hammond (1946), LaPorte (1948), and Michigan City (1949). By 1967, students could earn baccalaureate degrees at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond and Purdue University North Central in Westville.
In 2014 Purdue Calumet and Purdue North Central jointly announced plans to unify their campuses into a single university to be called Purdue University Northwest. Unification was officially approved by the Higher Learning Commission on March 4, 2016.
The Hammond campus is a residential campus covering 167 acres (67.6 ha). It is located 25 miles (40.2 km) from downtown Chicago.
The Westville campus is located on 268 acres (108.5 ha) in rural LaPorte County near along U.S. Highway 421. This location has three academic buildings and a veterinary emergency facility. The grounds the Westville campus have Shakespeare's Garden adjacent to a picturesque pond, tennis courts, an eighteen hole disc golf course, a baseball diamond, and four outdoor basketball courts.
