2012 Peace Cup |
The Peace Cup is an invitational pre-season friendly football tournament for club teams, currently held every two years by the Sunmoon Peace Football Foundation. It is contested by the eight clubs from several continents, though 12 teams participated in 2009. The first three competitions were held in South Korea, and the 2009 Peace Cup Andalucia was held in Madrid and Andalusia, Spain. Previous winners are PSV, Tottenham Hotspur, Lyon, Aston Villa, and Hamburger SV who are current champions.
The tournament was originally organised and held in South Korea and contested in 2003, 2005, and 2007 between eight clubs from various countries, including the Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, which is owned by the organizing company.
A corresponding event featuring women's national teams, the Peace Queen Cup, began in 2006.
The origin of the Peace cup is in a tournament that was held in Stadio Olimpico in Rome on September 10, 2000. 3 teams participated: AS Roma, Beitar Jerusalem, AlWaqass From Jordan. All 3 games were held in the same evening, each had 45 minutes length. Scores: Beitar Jerusalem -> AlWaqass 7-0: Scorers: Yaniv Abargil 3, Alon Mizrahi 2, Benjamin Haddad 1, Umar AlJabbaar 1 (OG), AS Roma -> AlWaqass 13:0: Scorers: Abel Balbo 4, Damiano Tommasi 1, Gaetano D'Agostino 2, Vincenzo Montella 6, AS roma -> Beitar Jerusalem 0-1: Scorer Yaniv Abargil. Beitar Jerusalem won the cup.
