New Zealand (abbreviated NZL) sent a team of 71 competitors and 13 officials to the 1938 British Empire Games, which were held in Sydney, Australia. The flagbearer at the opening ceremony was James Leckie. The team of 71 included 18 athletes, 17 rowers, 8 swimmers and divers, and 7 each of boxers, cyclists and wrestlers.
New Zealand has competed in every games, starting with the first British Empire Games in 1930 at Hamilton, Ontario. Selection is the responsibility of the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
New Zealand was fifth in the medal table in 1938.
