The Ministry of War was one of the Six Ministries under the Department of State Affairs in imperial China.
As with the Ministry of Punishments, the Ministry of War is also commonly translated as the Ministry or Board of Defense, in accordance with the usual modern English title for a government department with its role.
Under the Ming, the Ministry of War had control over the appointments, promotions, and demotions of military officers; the maintenance of military installations, equipment, and weapons; and administration over the imperial Chinese post or courier network. (Civil appointments, promotions, and demotions as well as titles of nobility fell under the purview of the Ministry of Personnel.)
