Lenox is a town in Madison County, New York, United States. The population was 9,112 as of the 2010 census.
The Town of Lenox is on the county's northern border. It is west of the City of Oneida.
The first settlement began around 1792. The town was formed in 1809 from the Town of Sullivan.
Some novels of Walter D. Edmonds characterize life in the area at the time of the Erie Canal construction.
The north town line, defined by Oneida Lake, is the border of Oneida County, New York. The Oneida Creek is on the east town boundary. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) crosses the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.4 square miles (94 km2), all of which is land.
The village of New Lenox, Illinois is named in honor of Lenox.
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,665 people, 3,485 households, and 2,359 families residing in the town. The population density was 238.0 per square mile (91.9/km²). There were 3,877 housing units at an average density of 106.5 per square mile (41.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.66% White, 0.66% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.
